Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

Tribless Ermor Meme or Rainbow Ermor?

Also, what's the most fun and versatile nation in all the different ages?
>>
ded general
>>
>>126120274
They play differently. Tribless is harder to answer if one of the blesses is blood, but less adaptable. Rainbow is more flexible but is unlikely to have any single tool as potent as the blessed lictors and knights.

There is one /domg/ MA Agartha victory. Desura victories generally do not list the bless. Three of them list "unkillable sentinels." None discuss awake expanders, let alone erf sneks with air.

Spells which have 'only affects demons' affect undead as well, so it's a reasonable question.
>>
So apparently Man has attacked Agartha. Man, are you around?
>>
>>126129334
Hinnon attacked everyone arround him then chucked all his forces against Man. Agartha took most his shit, but Man surived, so Man has been asking for some of the territory taken from Hinnon, and any territory that was his back.

I'm not sure if there was a deal, he may just be attacking you.

Did you get told about the bounty? 1 gold per skeleton killed.
>>
>>126129913
I've been following the thread, so I remember the bounty. Has Man been active on the thread at all, and if not do you know if he uses Steam or some other way of communicating? I want to sort this out before doing the turn.

Also old Agartha, if you're around, maybe you can clear this up. I'm probably going to extend the turn timer for this turn so that I can figure out what's actually going on this game, but if that happens sooner rather than later then I'll be able to submit since I think I'm the last one anyways.
>>
>>126130496
He hasn't responded to anything in thread, sporadically responds to in-game messages and MAY have steam.

Please just kill skeletons, if he is attacking you I can deal with it, given I can't fight skeletons due to lacking a border with them.

Ish, he's just finishing removing Ulm.
Abysia will be, Marignon is though I think needs a sub, Pan may or may not be joining in.
>>
>>126132357
I just needed an extension over the weekend. I'm still here, a stale turn later.
>>
>>126132357
Ok then. I remember reading about Pan backstabbing Agartha claiming to be scared of Agartha's size (which is kinda funny now that I see the map), so hopefully he was honest about having rethought that. Since most of the border is right next to Agartha's cap, I'm not too worried about losing a lot if he's not into Ermor removal.

Pan - I'm going to go take the little lake just to our north. I'm pretty surprised that Agartha hasn't taken it already
>>
>>126122226
Have you tried water elementals?

Give a W1 mage 3 water gems and tell them to cast Summon Water Power (conjuration 3) then Summon Water Elemental (conjuration 5).

Put the mage out front and make sure your other troops stay back so the water elementals can get to the lich.
>>
>>126132167

I have at the bare minimum sworn not to attack Agartha, or anyone else actively fighting Ermor, until (a) Ermor is defeated or (b) I get attacked by them first.
>>
>>126132962
>Give a W1 mage 3 water gems
Make that 2 gems, I was thinking of Summon Earthpower instead of Summon Water Power.
>>
>>126132981
Does that include sending stealthed armies into their territory?
>>
>>126132851

You can have the lake to the North, I was also surprised that was still unclaimed. I am however taking the water in the center of my territory.
>>
>>126133102

The only stealthy unit I have in Agartha's territory is Harpy Scouts. I consider anything more than that a hostile act, and won't do it unless I intend to go to war.
>>
>>126133251
Okay, just checking.
>>
And yeah, everyone should have scouts everywhere, so that's obviously not hostile.
>>
Pan, can you donate two bags of wine?
>>
>>126133902

Agartha, having supply issues. And it will be a few turns, I've actually used up all my Nature gems at the moment, and can only send Cauldrons at the moment.

That said I do actually have 2 cauldrons available at the moment, but I'll charge you the same as I did Mari (10 gems per cauldron of any type, which is still a pretty big discount).
>>
>>126134525

I've messaged the winners. The winners of Stone Touch, DesinterMA, Kings and Traitors, got back to me already.

Stone Touch/Disinter MA:
"The first time F4E9, the second time E9N9. I think E9N9 is better"

Kings and Traitors:
"I used an E9 Earth Serpent with luck and magic scales to get a ton of extra gems. In retrospect, the extra gems were extremely valuable, but the E9 would have been better as N9. You get so much prot on everything already, adding regeneration makes it that much harder to kill you."

Apparently, Desura likes N9 too, even when they win with erf snek.

Waiting on training montage and middle age crisis for responses still.

not sure honestly, there are still 25 odd nations hanging out. I know some are doing well, who are probably accelerating towards powerdom right now. I only know one or two who are lucky enough to be holding onto their own continent and then some though.
I would like to extend an open invitation to buttfuck Ulm and take his germanic land, as the cretins 300 strong army just broke vainly against the lush walls of Maverni.
>>
>>126144368
I too would like to extend a similar invitation to buttfuck Therodos, though their loss was only a hundred assorted sacreds and ghosts.

>>126123107
The thing I'm wondering is: Why can't you have both? Your mages and summons don't require any production, and as all your summons are income free, statue Agartha is even more able to field dozens of battlefield mages. You can easily get an N9E5 without dumping any scales but Production.
>>
>>126145578
You can have both. That's why it was so bizarre that he was throwing a fit over how great scales agartha is. You can get them while turning your statues into absolute monsters.

Dumping sloth lower than one makes it difficult to recruit Shard Gaurds. Which despite what 'lol take erfsnek' guy says are actually quite good sacreds for MA, maybe not 'carry your entire game like white centaurs' good, but still good.
>>
>>126145984
But will you have any money?
>>
>>126145823
Maybe he's convinced everybody goes full Mictlan Quadbless on them for some reason.
I don't think I've actually played a game with an Agartha with more than one major bless.
>>
>>126146057
Eh, they're good enough you don't need many of them to expand properly, especially if augmented by mercenaries or good indies. You can back them up with Attentive Statues if you don't mind blowing some gems.
>>
>>126146073

Heh, I said it was my first PBEM, not my first game. Between the blitzes I've played with TNN's player and prior experience to games like Diplomacy and Civ (which really helps basically everything except scripting battles) I picked up stuff pretty fast.

I'll also say the blood economy thing was much less skill, and much more the game deciding I should have one. Random events have been stupid good to me. Circle Masters OP.

Getting called an experienced player is something I consider a compliment though, so thank you.

Luck gives you more events and makes more of them good, so even though magic gives you chances of higher gem count events, higher luck will give you way more of them overall.

You realize that just a skull staff (or even just the D gems) and the water bottle is just as good or better, right? Hey, /domg/, ichtyid mod guy here in need of quick help.
A modded spell sprays disease-causing filth like nether darts (same range, scaling, fatigue cost, but no damage), what research level should I assign to it? Even weak mages can spray a lot. The spell itself will be D1N1.

Actually, I recruited a bunch of people to dominions in real life; the TC player is one of them.

The problem with disease is that it's more of a long-term thing, not something that has a huge impact on the battle here and now. So if you have the choice between spreading disease or doing actual damage, the disease isn't really an attractive option.

>>
>>126181203
It wasn't the going AI, it was the massive rants in thread/he was being an annoying tosser in the thread generally.

Also, with no income it's harder to do stuff, with AC up if you're mages aren't great in terms of physical stats you can mosty just twiddle thumbs. Basically it's having that, Utterdark and no pop which means nothing happens for many sides.
>>
>>126181203
Turning off the gold economy means that you can only use gems. That's still fine, because you can still do a lot of stuff with gems only, but then AC turns off gem use.
>>
>>126174808

Nvm I went and did it before.
>>
>>126166305
2 sounds reasonable.
Maybe a second version at 6 or 7 that does some damage on hit and also aoe disease?
>>
>>126182396
And when it comes to gold economy, Pangaea effectively has top-shelf mages available for 8 nature gems, a major advantage over most nations in gold-starved conditions.
>>
>>126185047
The problem with that is you still need the initial investment.
However, nature does have some of the best summonable mages, and summons, second only to death, who tend to be more expensive.
>>
How do I use Khlysti and Fivefold Angels properly as Bogarus? Is there a bless worth putting on them or should I just put all my points into dominion? The manual mentions B9 as an interesting way to play Bogarus and it sounds cool in theory but really gimmicky. I'm playing a game with an A4W3E4N4 pretender for the summons but it feels weird to be ignoring my sacred units.
>>
>>126185897
Fivefold Angels are useful as blood hunters. You don't want to be using the sacreds in general, though. They really are as bad as they look.
>>
>>126171992

No. It's existed since 2008 but it's been resting for a while, because Patala's mind broke or something.
>>
>>126185897
>>126186004
I tend to use occultists for blood hunters, as a rod gets them up to the important B2, and occultists have a lot of other uses.

Fivefolds are good for adding blood magic to an army, or stealthing into the enemy territory and causing problems. I don't use them often, but Bogarus can actually do a lot of stealthy commander annoyingness with their summons.

Mostly Bogarus wants to be using the fact that they have the fastest research in the game and can get highly varied communions. Also, try to recruit indie crossbows, because you can get flaming arrows+windguide.
>>
>>126186004
"Useful" - you're paying double the upfront cost and a little more upkeep for a unit with worse research, almost always worse magic and a single B level - maybe if you want to hunt before you have rods, probably not worth it after you get those going.

>>126185897
Ignoring your sacreds is totally fine on a lot of nations.
>>
>>126185897
with that bless, you can put a shroud on some of your mages, making them decently tougher and better at casting spells.
That the best use for that bless in that nation by far.
>>
>tfw you saved a throne so no one knew you were rushing, but then forgot to claim it pre rush

>>126186374
>I tend to use occultists for blood hunters
That's what I had been doing for cost reasons, 225g compared to 100g is a pretty significant difference.

>>126186393
>Ignoring your sacreds is totally fine on a lot of nations.
I'm still fairly new to the game but I learned to play using OP stuff like W9 Pangea so I guess it seems weird because I've gone from using one of the strongest sacreds in the game to presumably one of the weakest.

>>126186004
>They really are as bad as they look.
Dissapointing. I really like the idea of a cult of suicidal self flagellating religious fanatics being the backbone to a plan for world domination but I guess it just was not meant to be.
>>
>>126185897

Just like real russia, your best russia play is to ignore anyone who is too patriotic about russia.

>>126182396

Just use mages who can kill horrors. Job-> Done.
>>
>>126187545
occultists are also decent researchers (they hit the standard of 10g per research point), your main access to death and thus can do your death searching before you set them to bloodhunting, and are a good way to stick some reinvigorates into your communions.

You should be recruiting a fair number of them, the balance of them to other mages will depend on the game.
>>
>>126187735
>best russia
Vanarus should definitely use their sacreds, but they are more finorussian than straight russian.

>>126159427

Since there's a sale, I'm thinking about buying Dominions 4(Right now I'm playing a pirate version)

they're currently hammering out bugs in CoE4 so Dom4 development has slowed to a standstill.
dom5 might be here by 2020.

Occasionally. There's been a decent number of updates for Dom4 including new nations, although they haven't done much recently due to releasing CoE4. Dominions 5 is probably some time away still.

Multiplayer plays entirely differently from single player and is much, much better. Fighting against real opponents forces you to think about magic, unlike singleplayer.

Blood Slaves

MA Mictlan
>>
>>126242938
You actually have a lot to spend slaves on, but Ozelotls are fantastic. Assuming you're running a decent bless (you have a double bless, right?) they'll be flying killing machines that can take a hit way better than your eagle warriors.

Blood is great in general, but other nice things if you have the paths for them include - arch devils, onaquis, ice devils if you need leaders for your armies of demons, storm demons if you can summon them in sufficient numbers, demon knights if you need an armored fright line that also hits hard and frightens enemies, ritual of five gates to get all the flavors of demons that you don't have the crosspaths for, I could go on.

Blood magic is best magic

So what do you guys do with non-mage human commanders?

I've been kind of at a loss as to what to do with them, just been slapping Black Steel Full Plate/Helmet + Anti-magic amulet + girdle of might + boots of giant strength + whatever crossbow seems appropriate on them, and just having them plink stuff. Figured they could use the armor and amulet for survival.

Also, what items should I be putting on mages to help them live more? Was thinking armor, but I read that it fucks their spell casting because encumbrance, but I don't like them getting nicked by a stray arrow and dying.
>>
Don't bother equipping regular humans unless you really need more firepower and have extra gems, in which case the fireball wand and some of the bows are ok. Never bother with armor on them.

Mages don't need equipment other than maybe boosters / reinvig gear for certain scripts or armor for when you know you're walking into RoS. You solve the arrow problem with positioning and buff spells, not equipment.

If you want to spend gems on gear, first get a chassis worthy of wearing it.
>>
>>126253649
>So what do you guys do with non-mage human commanders?
Usually nothing, I just have them sit at the back.

Sometimes I give them a ranged weapon or a spellcasting item so they can contribute, but there are usually better things to do with my gems.

>Also, what items should I be putting on mages to help them live more? Was thinking armor, but I read that it fucks their spell casting because encumbrance, but I don't like them getting nicked by a stray arrow and dying.
Armor can be worth it if it's a particularly valuable mage. You can also buff mages with spells. Marble Warriors will give a decent area similar protection to heavy infantry.

How big a deal encumbrance is depends what spell the mage is casting. If it's a big spell that they're only going to be able to cast once encumbrance is meaningless. If it's a relatively weak spell that they're going to cast a lot of times, encumbrance is a big deal.

You can get a few types of armor that have low or zero encumbrance. Weightless scale mail provides some protection and doesn't reduce spellcasting ability.

is there a reason not to recruit researchers in capital only?
>>
>>126279680
You almost always want to be recruiting nothing but mages out of every fort. For some nations, you might want 120 leadership guy or inspiring leader every once in awhile for the morale bonus or some assassins for assassinating, but by default you want to get more mages.
>>

some spells give the same effect and so it doesn't stack ( for example mass protection doesn't stack with barskin).

but diffferent sources of the same stats stack: boots of youth do stack with earth's power and with other (different) reinvigoration items.

That's not what I asked.
>>
>>126282497
Oh, are you asking if you should recruit researchers from outside your cap? Of course you should. You generally want to be spending as much gold on mages as possible. You'll want to build forts and labs to recruit national mages (on most nations, at least), and when you get lucky enough to find indie mages worth recruiting you'll want to build a lab there as well to recruit them.

>>
>>126283494

Yes, its called 'new players'. To avoid that make invite only games or do background checks on people joining.
>>
>>126283545
You can only spend gems up to your level. Dance of Morrigans requires 4 gems, and since he is D4, he can't spend the 5th gem needed to raise his level
>>
>>126283494
No, you need D5 to cast it since he would need to cast 4 gems for the spell and an extra gem to gain an extra level, and he can only spend 4 gems due to being D4.
>>
>>126283552
No, it's not new players. It's legit shitters. People that don't even remotely care about winning, that'll actively help other people win even though that fucks thme over as well. People that'll ruin games with wish spamming, or join new player games without being new. In general, people not fun to play with. The maniple system had the least experienced soldiers at the front, the velites, which fell back to let the hastati engage, and so on. There was a Roman saying of "it has come to the Tirarii", meaning something akin to our back is against the wall, they were meant to fight till they all died unlike the front maniples and frequently managed to win battles that the opposition had thought won.
They had spears for longer than the other classes of troop, as originally the Roman army was mostly hoplites, but due to the campaigns in Italy and then Spain they adopted the short stabbing sword.

In my opinion Agricultural and Monarchy are the more balanced choices.

Dark Ages is shit for everyone except those that rely on nature sites (like Witch, Troll, Druid etc), while Empire and New Empire are the opposite of that and are better for those that need villages and cities. Haven't played enough Fallen Empire to say anything worthwhile, but I think that one might be best for Necromancers because it has lots of battlegrounds and stuff.

Rushing with mictlan is not really the right way to play mictlan, and is one of the reasons they get clobbered so often. Mictlan wants multiple forts up before starting any fights, because 7 jags/turn really can't hang with the real rush nations.
>>
I have been noticing that /domg/ seems to play a lot more aggressive lately than I'm used to previously.

Yeah, Mictlan is great with a bless because they can make a LOT of sacreds - both as awesome summons and as low resource infantry out of every fort. Trying to fight against the cap only sacred nations without that advantage is missing the whole point of recruit anywhere sacreds.

>>
>>126304302
what's a wish engine? how do you win with wish? i mean it's a good spell but doesn't even win a war.
>>
>>126306081

1. find an alt discount site
2. wish for gems
3. make net profit, repeat
4. get more casters via wishing
5. wish for more and more gems

With an alt20 site you get 20 gems per turn so its a gem gen per caster.
>>
>>126305712
If there's a game with exactly two UW nations, you may as well just give Pelagia two capitals because they will slaughter any other UW nation as soon as they find them. Because of their UW dominance, they are extremely difficult to invade until SCs come out in the late game, which they're also really good at because they can find all UW sites that aren't death and can generate plenty of pearls for dispels and their own astral globals. Their former limitation was that they couldn't bring support for their mage lineup on land, but that's just no true anymore. They retain the same strengths with added amphibious front line (both coastal and UW) to shore up their former weakness and RoS capable mermages if they have to deal with Sceleria or Ermor hordes on land

Rlyeh gets a S5 hero so first him, after that Seraphs.
>>
>>126310328
Seraphs start with S4, which is the highest you'll get on a generic commander. Stargazer gets S5, but he's unique. Everything else higher than 4 is stuff like Horrors, God Vessels and Grigori, so not worth wishing for.
>>
>>126310328
You could also get some from the Tartarian Lottery, if you're feeling lucky
>>
>>126310328

Starspawn have like a 50% chance to get S4 and a ~10% chance to get S5 (and even a super tiny chance, like 0.1% or something, to get S6), but they're probably not worth spending a wish on, compared to the guaranteed S4 of a Seraph.

And of course there's Tartarians, but those are super random. The chance you'll get one with an Astral score higher than 4 is something like 1-2% probably.

Machaka's troops are fine. Gold for gold, Rhino and Lion warriors can hold the line against giants and some sacreds, although you do have to pay a little more for them. The Machaka spears they get are longer than regular spears to make their repels even stronger. Your archers are like slightly weaker versions of Sauro's archers, but your easy Flaming Arrows access makes good archers more of a national advantage. Yes, the naked warriors are very fragile and the Hyena warriors have bad morale, but every mage nation in EA has a couple troops that are outclassed by other options that they just refrain from buying.

Oh, and all their guys have map move 3. The only EA nations with better defensive movement potential are winged and/or stealthy.

Machaka's Bird Clan are barely above indies (+1 precision), whereas Sauro gets composite bows.

The Pygmys can work well with a Flaming Arrows strategy though.

>Oh, and all their guys have map move 3. The only EA nations with better defensive movement potential are winged and/or stealthy.

I'm pretty new at Dominions, and I feel like I might be losing at pretender creation. Do the more seasoned players have any tips about how I should be planning around my nation and pretender? I'm at a loss as to what I should be building my strategy around.

Should I be trying to mass some type of powerful unit, and throw it at an enemy, or should I be doing something like rushing a powerful spell? Or none of the above?

More like both of the above in general, there will be a couple of spells that you'll want to aim for, as well as most nations need an army (skellyspammers mostly just need mages).

In terms of pretender design, first you need to decide if and how much of a bless you want, based on how usefull the nation's sacreds are. Then scales, generally you want to min/max, as the classic meaning of minimising weaknesses and buffing strengths, for instance magic scales help poor but plentiful researchers, misfortune scales are mitigated by fortune tellers and so such.
Finally, what do you want the God to do when it wakes (which is turn 1 if you take awake). Remember it can only do one thing a turn, no matter how many different things it could do. Rainbow pretenders to break into other paths, awake early expanders, or to cast high level rituals are all choices.
>>
>>126355516
Funny you should mention skellingtons, my friend who's a little more experienced at the game than the group I was playing with kind of facerolled us with a skeleton army. I suppose that's where this question came from, since his strategy looked like it was pretty cohesive, while the rest of us kind of felt all over the place.
>>
>>126355808
Mages do easy work of skeletons if you use them right. Just have a bunch casting RoS and Earthquake and watch the chaff just melt away.

it's pretty complicated and it depends on the nation. gods are usuall multipurpose, with being awake expander, giving a sacred bless, being able to rush a STRONG global, having tons of good scales be being the main points you can
aim to.

i would definitely not go for a researcher god or a sitesearcher god as a main target unless you know very well what you are doing.

with scales you have to go balldeep into min maxing, often testing the early game to see if you can get around with that level of early capital gold and resources.
in 90% of cases you want to go full heat or cold ( depending on what hurts less/synergize more your nation, heat helps fire magic, cold helps water magic).
unless you know very well what you are doing with that nation you'll want to go as low as possible with production, testing expansion just for that.
growth and order helps immensely for blood hunting nations.
growth >> order in terms of gold, but order gives you a bigger gold burst in the first 12 turns for nations that needs extra gold when expanding or an early rush.
as order/turmoil decrease/Increase events you should almost always modulate luck accordingly. misfortune scales can be extremely punishing but order 3 misfortune 1 is seen as an acceptable optimization.
magic scales are a worthless purchase in my opinion if your mages already have 12+ research points. you should do magic/drain 1-2 based on the research of your most recruited mage....for example giants can even go drain 3. never go misfortune with high drain.

as for blesses if you invest heavily you want to win an early conquest war or you want your sacreds to be abundant and relevant even lategame ( summons or recruit anywhere, should survive earthquake/rain of stones, some evocations, or in a completely different direction having a good bless for thugs too).
they depend strongly on nations.
>>
>>126355381
I'd say that there are two vital issues to consider at the pretender design stage.

First is how you're going to expand against indies. You should have a plan that gets you at least 12 provinces in a year reliably, preferably more. This may mean production scales on your pretender, it might mean a bless, or it might require an awake pretender to expand against indies.

Second is what research you want first. Generally you want a useful combat spell which you can get lots of mages casting. Look through the options (research level 5 maximum) and pick one. Pretender choice doesn't usually influence this much, it's mainly nation choice. However, knowing which research you want means you can fight and win against enemy players much earlier. Just spreading research around into what looks cool at the time ends up with inefficient use of research.

Once you've got both of these figured out you can spend pretender design points on other things, usually scales. Sometimes getting some magic skill for lategame is worth it.

What exactly a good combat spell or good expansion strategy is will vary between nations, I don't think I can give any general advice for that. You can ask if you're not sure, /domg/ seems to like arguing over that sort of thing.
>>
>>126356713
>>126356973
So what sort of role ought a pretender play? Should you be using your pretender in combat (either as a front line combatant or a support/mage roll), or should a pretender sit in one of your provinces doing something else (like research)?

And how important is scouting? Should I be recruiting some scouts from my provinces and then have them roam?
>>
>>126322052
What happened here? Asking for a friend.
>>
>>126357540
Research is what a pretender does when he has nothing useful to do.

Other than that, it depends on a lot of factors. Early on a pretender can help expand and/or sitesearch, later on he can cast rituals, craft items, or act as mage support (or even a SC, depending on his chassis and magic paths) in important battles.
>>
>>126357685

an awake pretender has to either expand consistently or summon something essential to the nation ( such as MA ermor which needs thei mage to be summoned by a god)

other gods ca be and do whatever you want, everything is permitted, but typically you want to get them to craft at least 1-2 items/summon a caster that your nation otherwise couldn't craft/summon.

scouting is extremely important, especially to choose your first target, so you need to recruit them from an indie province. it's a shame to recruit a scout instead of a mage, but if you get unlucky and get not scout province it might be necessary. in that case position them in such a way that 2-3 scouts will be able to watch over the most probable route for an enemy army coming for you.
>>
>>126357540
>So what sort of role ought a pretender play?
Ideally you want them doing things your mages can't. Forging items and casting rituals is the safest (and pretender gods with strong magic make some rituals which scale with magic very cost-effective) but using them as a caster with an army works as well.

If your pretender has a magical path which your nation doesn't get you may want to sitesearch with him.

>And how important is scouting? Should I be recruiting some scouts from my provinces and then have them roam?
Scouting is very important in multiplayer, but almost useless against AI

It gives you early warning of enemy invasions, lets you see when other players are at war with each other, and lets you watch battles between other players to see what magic and tactics they're using.

Most importantly, it gives you a method to verify what other players say so they can't just feed you bullshit during diplomacy. Far too many games are lost because people end up ignoring a player who clearly has a massive advantage.

If you don't get scout provinces you should seriously consider producing some scouts using forts just so you're not completely blind.
>>
>>126358061
Aww...

Paint more skellies.
>>
>>126355381

None of the above.

There are three things to consider in pretender design:

National mages (their paths and cost)
National troops
National summons/any other national advantage

What spells your national mages can cast is extremely important. You will spend the game researching these spells and casting them, repeatedly, the most effective ones they can use.

Your national troops are mostly important if they vastly outperform other troops, or are either good or bad at expanding.

National summons or other advantages are mostly taken into account if you don't have the paths to use them natively, or if they plug weaknesses in your nation, or augment the power of either your mages or your troops. Agartha's shitty troops, for example, don't matter as much because of their amazing summons.

Pretenders either;

Make up for shitty expansion troops by being an awake expander
Add some extreme utility to your national paths - forging air boosters to use high-air spells your mages can't otherwise reach, summoning powerful summons you can't otherwise use
or giving a bless to your sacred troops that makes them good enough that they are worth the design points you spent to make them

Every design point you put into a god is one you don't have to spend on scales. It has to be absolutely worth it to outweigh a scaling advantage that you will carry through the game with you.

Most players try to use a single tactic or troop to carry them to victory. Actually skilled dominions players use every POSSIBLE viable tactic, mixing and matching them to make their opponents guess. Even maximally effective tactics (MA Ulm Magmaspam + heavy infantry) have counters - only developing a new tactic after your old one is defeated means you'll be dead long before it comes online.

Not sure, but it's probably because
1.) They're lacking in magical depth.
2.) while their labrats are battle-applicable, they need a ton to do anything b/c communion, and
3.) They're rush prone because their troops are mostly crap AND high resource, and it takes them a little longer to get good battlemagic online.

I have a 'bad reputation with you and a few other people who i've argued with on desura about game mechanics and who have taken it personally. I've refrained from doing so, and feel a lot happier with that decision. A game on the internet is really not worth feeling any kind of ire compared to things in real life that actually harm people. I'll argue a case for it, but i'm certainly not going to get upset over it. That people do, and treat expressing an opinion or judgement as some huge indicator of nerd-dick-size, is more a symptom of the kind of person dominions appeals to than any sort of legitimate basis for anything.
>>
>>126368743
I wasn't involved in that argument. I think you don't realize that people not posting in that thread still formed opinions of your reputation. Or how bad that it continues to look since you're hopping on a high horse about it.

Nobody is claiming that the game is the most important thing, just that you have a poor rep in the context of the game.

Sure, there are more important things, but right now you're posting in a general about that game, so they're frankly pretty irrelevant.
>>
>>126368743
I don't even have a Desura account and reading your posts still makes you come off as an enormous twat. No one cares about your real life; this is a Dominions general. If you make bad posts about Dominions then that's the only thing that we're going to be judging you on. Making an appeal to real life just makes you look like even more of a cock gargler since it means that you know that your thoughts are shit but still don't want to admit that you're wrong.

There's no reason for you to assume that people are taking the things that you post personally. When people call you an idiot for making idiotic posts, it doesn't mean that they feel ire towards you. Always aim for something. Build your pretender with something in mind, be it grabbing specific items or artifacts, casting certain spells, or just early game expansion. Try to take scales that work well with your nation. If your national troops don't require much in the way of resources, consider sloth. If you've got cheap national mages, go magic. If you're Ermor or any other domkill nation that has big problems with money for the love of god take luck.

Hey, just bought dom4. How long do you think i should play single player before I dont completely get assraped in multi? I have played about 4 hours of the dominions 3 demo to get an idea of whether or not I like it so i am new as fuck.
>>
>>126415107
It varies depending on so many factors, as in the enemies composition and script as well as your composition.
Things like having the enemy reaching just in front of your tramplers but not close enough so they get the first attack, making their attack rear troops run into a wall of chaff to protect your mages, positioning arrow fodder or units tough enough to laugh at arrows in the right place so they get targeted and those that miss don't 1hit your casters.
Even something as basic as flanking means a bunch, due to each unit that attacks a specific unit in a turn gets in effect +2 attack after the first.
>>
>>126417068
Long enough to understand the interface and the basic mechanics, no longer. The AI just doesn't play like a human, so playing singleplayer can only teach you the basics at best, or cause you to learn bad habits at worst.

Depends on the nation, Pan sometimes is better with 1 PD so the Mino can kill something. But generally I go for 6 as it displays as 6-19 in terms of scouting info.
>>
>>126417828
>>126417837
it depends
>>
>>126417828
>>126417837
Depends on whats on the other side, and if its a choke, and if things can fly or teleport, if you have any mages or other troops to move in to support the PD.
>>
>>126417837
You should always have at least 1. This prevents the enemy from capturing it without a fight, and although it can't stop any real army, the battle gives you information on what your opponent is fielding.
>>
>>126417837

If you get a chariot/trampler commander, 1.
If you don't, i typically do 6.
If it's a choke point/building a fort and i took misf scales, up to 20 to kill off barbs. this is pretty rare though and on the high side.
If Bloodhunting the shit out of a province, I may go up to 15 for that free point of unrest, but often patrollers/scales make that irrelevant.

Generally, any decent army is going to have no problem clearing out any non-absurd amount of pd, and getting pd high enough to hold off an army is incredibly expensive, and typically pointless since your opponent will either bring counters and clear it out, or just fly/teleport over it, or go around it.

alwaysalwaysalwaysalways do at least 1 pd. If nothing else, it allows you to get a general idea of the invading army's bless/units/etc.

good scripts - attacking your opponent's PD with actual troops while his giant army stomps around being useless
having stealth and flying raiders
dropping grip of winter and skeletons, watching your opponent slowly fall asleep while you laugh
mass flight + earthquake (+ storm)
wave after wave of your own elementals
teleporting master enslave communion

raping people with magic > scripting your troops well
>>
>>126417828

1-3, or 7-8, or 11. That stops the most common kind of indie attacks/scout attacks, in order of cost/effectiveness. Provinces that have good PD units, buy a bit more PD, so random wolves don't eat them or something. Provinces with shitty tribals, put in like 3, just let it die when indies come a-knockin'.

No amount of PD is going to stop a player force unless you put in 20 PD in random provinces to hopefully cockblock a poorly built thug, which is so expensive that it's crazy.

Expand so quickly that you'll be the largest player even after others have won their first war and thus not being under any pressure to attack, but having supreme early-midgame power to do so if you wanted to (while, if you have a luxury of sitting on your ass without committing any mages to serious fighting, you can hit your big army buff spells with a good timing, making your armies really difficult to counter).

Most games end before anyone researches pillar of fire.

>>126465452

Cronemod is kind of a raft of random changes, most of which serve to buff nations that already didn't suck (like all earth nations). It lends itself to Conj summons and buffing tactics therefore enables big mage stacks faster, which is boring as fuck. Doesn't meaningfully change the game, and the ways it does change the game just reinforce the existing domg meta.

as this guy said Cronemod is kinda meh. Could you host a non-cronemod game?
>>
Yup, Cronemod is something to add if someone asks for it and then no one objects, not a baseline that is just on games.

Cronemod more like GARBAGE NOBODY USES EVER ayy lmao

>magic 3

i know that you have 2 cheap 7 research units, but the last boost is merely a + 11% only on your shittiest mages, which are already really cheap.

how much gold do you expect to invest soothsayers or spirit guies? ( i seriously hope you are not going for spirit guides m8)

given the need of 1000 gold fort just to recruit them id' say far far less than half your national gold.

i'd say the +3% gold +0.02% pop growth is more valuable for you than the last point of magic unless you are aiming for a swiss-clock pre-tested turn 14 stellar cascade agression. which is stupid because soothsayers are only 90% S so you can't even rely on getting it on exactly a certain turn. G3 also helps bloodhunting

aside for that you might want to test production scales: if you spam forts for soothsayers you might end up with enough resources for amazons spam and go for another bless instead.
speaking of the bless... it looks ok, but going from E4 to E6 is not so valuable, i doubt the nation offers other good chassises for such a cheap bless, but in case a W9 E4 D4orN4 would be the slightly more expensive option to go for.S4 is not bad for forging purposes. i would even go human for more slots and a general " i don't give a fuck to safelydeploy my 36th-turn vengeful-water-caster god".
>>
>>126468695
Sauromatia needs mega scales and some paths to forge boosters, not a bless.

Either go awake Bull to get super big, or imprisoned crafter for rings of sorcery to allow your witch kings to get tarts imo.

Magic 3 is great though, and gives Sauro the strongest research in the game. I wouldn't bother with a bless but would grab productivity for cataphracts as well.

something like E5S6N2 Monolith with
D6 03 P2 H1 G3 Mis1 M3

almost none.
my griffins were my entire army essentially and they're all 27 yrs old.
My income took almost no hit at all as I expanded faster than the BoT killed, and when I needed extra gold I just used my God to alchemize fire gems
>>
>>126472684
my mages saw very little field use, since the griffins were almost always enough to carry the battle for me, outside of a few times fighting Midgard where I needed them for different things.
I did a TON of bloodhunting surprisingly enough, and I had enough RP to rush Conj7 when I realized I could easily take the thrones I needed to win no offense Mari, fort EVERY throne no exceptions, I understand why you couldn't fort the underwater three pointer, and that was ultimately why I won, but still.

I used the shit out of my summons in those last handful of turns, and wouldn't have been able to win without them, (flying teleportable H3 on a decent chassis, and waterbreathing (20) on the ahurani)

nothing to see really on this one, I got big and stayed big. Eating Midgard was huge for me, and put me on top of most of the charts, eating AI Gath still no real idea why he went AI gave me the last throne I needed before I rushed Mari.

my F9 pretender coupled with the Temple gem income boosted my F gem income relatively high.
I also used a lot of Arcane probing early on because I don't have high S and I needed more pearls for all sorts of things.
I didn't use gems all that often, there just weren't ever enough to do what I needed, my Slave income was infinitely useful however, as I made a shitload of boots of youth.

dick load of forts on my part, most of them conquered.

as a final note:
I won this game because I ate Midgard essentially alone, I managed to eat Midgard alone because Jomon, Midgard and I shared a small border in the north and I originally invaded from the north because Bogarus invaded from the south. Post Midgard everyone was focused on destroying Bats and Ghosts so I managed to put my empire on idle while I mopped up AIs, and the rest is history.

I'd like to thank Jomon for needing my help with Midgard, if I had invaded Mari like I wanted to instead I would have been much worse off, Lemuria for distracting everyone with his "BOO I'm a scary ghost" tactics
Bats for invading Ulm and causing Jomon and Mari to invade him.
and finally and most of all Mari for not defending his thrones.
>>126474176
I'll submit the win later, Ragha is hella powerful, with a huge early game that carries into midgame like nothing else can, and late game summons that just wreck everyone's shit
>>
>>126474373

Can you post your pretender? Interested to see how you set him up. Also congrats on the win.

>agartha
>spending your earth gems on non-amazing summons and things that aren't globals
oh shit son what are you doing
>>
>>126481096
not him but what are good summons. i've found myself that a very large amount of summons often feel very mediocre especially considering the cost and sometimes the stage of the game at which you get them.

some of the best ones imo seem to be the really dumb "summon 15 fire snakes" and shit just because of quantity.
>>
>>126481096
I actually did use Cave Grubs, and rec them for 1 purpose only: expansion. They're available at Conj 1, and let you send out far more expansion parties than otherwise.
>>126481284
Fire doesn't really have worthwhile summons imo unless you have a national like Agartha (Magma Children) or Bogurus (Firebirds), the kings not withstanding ofc.
>>
>>126479290
It's a really cheap monobless with really reliable results, giving them a magic weapon, an attack stat boost, doubling their attack density, and having pretty good pretender uses. W9 is probably better if you want a mono but it's more expensive, and you desperately need the scales, taking dom higher than 6 is useless for recruitment purposes, which says nothing about high dom all around just that you'll never have the resources for more than 5 maybe 6 griffins.
N9 is unnecessary, E9 has it's uses but their first form doesn't have fatigue problems and the 5 prot is pointless, D9 would probably be really good, but a high level D caster doesn't seem as useful, B9/S9/A9 are all suboptimal imo though B and S are as cheap as F with the casters both being roughly as useful for Ragha.
obviously this is all just my opinion, but yeah Griffins seriously need a nerf.
>>
>>126481979
Oh right, W9 is more expensive because you have to stack E(x) with it, since their secondshape has fatigue issues without quickness.
>>
>>126470328
>1000 gold fort
are you high? you only 600 gold palisades for soothsayers m8

>>

I have a question.

My fort is under siege, and I have both reinforcements nearby and forces inside the fort.

If I attack the sieging force and break the siege on the same turn, will there be one big battle or 2 smaller battles?
>>
>>126502513
Should be a single big battle if the enemy stays on your fort.

I'm not sure what happens if the enemy tries to attack your reinforcements at the same time as you break siege though.
>>
>>126502513
1 Big battle - unless your opponent predicts you and moves to intercept your reinforcements

it also only needs 1 more to start.
