Going up and down endlessly wont get you anyway, the youkai only reset after you leave the area completely or return to title screen.

Personally i found resetting the game to be faster because those fucking stairs take you off your bike. First 10 minutes of searching only encountered him once.

The little tutorials you get at the beginning are enough to get you through just about anything. As you go on you learn the finer points mostly from intuition and experience.

It's good to know from the outset that befriending "Catching" youkai is pretty much RNG based, all you can do is increase your chances of them joining you. Aside from that there's not much else to warn or get you prepared for i think. You can enjoy it at your own pace
