I finished HL2 recently, now trying to go through episode 1 and 2. It's really tiresome. The gameplay is so boring. Small unappealing shooting segment followed by shitty small puzzle and repeat, all while having to listen to the girl trying to tell me how to feel ("oh, no, we must hurry!!", "uh, this is so creepy...", etc).

it begins with lameass zombies and antlions, the most mindless and boring enemies

have 2 good fights(hunter, village ambush)

I didn't mean to phrase it that way. I meant two shots to the body. Combine would die in one shot to the head with the shotgun. And the pistol literally only served as the typical weak weapon you'll never use, a thing in basically every shooter.

Just because other shooters have this problem doesn't mean it's not a problem. Look at mods like Demonsteele, where the Pistol still has a use because no other weapon can match it for accuracy besides the secret weapons you aren't really supposed to use, and even then those can't match it's damage.

One of the biggest issues with Half Life 2 is the weapons feel incredibly weak. Headshots should do more damage than they do in game, because then it rewards skill, while making the weapons actually feel more powerful.

The shotgun also feels weak, the gravity gun is a gimmick weapon, and of course the rocket launcher feels strong, but you rarely get ammo that justifies using it outside of scripted sequences. The Crossbow is a gimmicky weapon with no real use outside of long range sniping, and is really only useful against single enemies at long range, because using it in combat is pointless, especially in Episode 2 where enemies like the Hunters can take multiple hits from it.

Half Life 1 rewarded skillful use of your weaponry, even unintentionally in games like HLSource (with how it let you kill a helicopter with a pistol if you were precise enough) where as Half Life 2 just rewards you for shooting as fast as you can the majority of the time, sparingly giving you ammo for more skilled weapons like the Magnum.

The only weapon that had solid feedback for me was the AR2, because it had the power and recoil to back it up. The SMG had a satisfying firing sound and animation, but in terms of damage, not so much. I shouldn't have to turn the difficulty down to make the weapons feel better. I'd rather have a Heaven or Hell-esque mode where I do shittons of damage, but so do my enemies.
