Just download the PC ports of SH2-4. Konami literally does not give a shit. Here's the SH PC Guide + DL links:

SH4 DDL:
https://mega.nz/#!Us1XTaII!cglH0dZOaH5yQEm4cnEh3eyUz4bIf6rACQqcVzkb4Hc

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
You can now see some decent emulator settings for SH1 as well in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Also give the new PGXP emulator a shot for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.

The guide says to rename ending.bik to end.bik but the enhancement pack already contains both of those files when I extract it, so I'm guessing I just leave it alone?
>>
>>386261969
I guess so.
I've personally only used the older sh2proxy, and it's been smooth riding. Don't really care for higher fps FMVs and shit when the game runs at locked 30 anyway.

The FMV's look quite a bit cleaner so there's that.

Is there a fix for James' shadow in SH2? I have all the fixes mentioned in the guide and his shadow looks wrong in the sense that it's cast directly under him at all times, as if a copy of his model was running directly under him if that makes any sense.
>>
>>386269749
I think that was taken with some (then) quite recent ePSXe, yeah. I too use it still for the fact that it just werks, and fast.

PCSX-R, a sort of fork of ePSXe versions, has kinda eaten latter's position on the emu-scenes, but at the same time it has also managed to integrate some of the competitors' new features too.

>>386269167
can pi3 even run PS1 emulators?
I wouldn't be too surprised, knowing that I was already emulating PS1 games some 15 years ago on a single-core Windows XP machines with no GPU whatsoever.

>>386268570
You could practically just carry out some OK wormbox from a fleamarket or recycling center, and it'd probably be more than enough to run the SH ports. I've seen some folks find some proper, decent poorfag gaming machines like that.

>>386271031
No, he means the actual shadows the enemies and NPCs cast.

On PS2, they're soft-edget. On PC, they are like in Doom 3 and FEAR: sharp and clean-edged.

There's this controversial comparison video on YT that makes PC port's audio sound like total trash in comparison to PS2. Live, the difference is nowhere near as major, but PS2 does have some minor pros over PC version in this case too - like the dynamically built and looped music VS the simple audio files on PC.

That's only outdoors in the bright sections with no dynamic light sources. It's like that even on PS2.

With majority of the game taking place in dark in-door areas, this "problem" practically disappears later on.
>>
>>386271282
I'm about to try Silent Hill on RPi3 soon, after a game finishes installing, but the only PSX game I tried on it was Symphony of the Night, and it ran flawlessly
>>
>>386271493
How are shadows working in that game, from the video, it lools lile the show a transparent sprite infront of the screen and adjust it accordingly
>>
>>386271516
not surprising, as it's a 2D game.

>>386271679
Look up "Stencil shadows".
There's no sprites at work here. Instead, there's invisible "shadow models" applied to all characters and objects that can cast shadows, and those models then stretch out semi-infinitely "away" from light sources. Any surface area these stretched-out models touch, if they can "receive" shadows, then get kind of colored within the shadow-model's silhouette. Webm related

That's it in as simple layman's terms as I can possibly try to explain it. Doom3 and many other early-00s games used this kind of tech, before the texture-based projected shadows, and later Deferred Shading, rendered stencil shadows obsolete.

I never noticed the shadow problem myself when I played it on PC, because generally the flashlight and the shadow it casts was much better. But I did emulate both 2 and 3 somewhat recently just in case there was some missing or altered audio file and just for some better fog effects.

I can recommend it to any SH fan. Personally, I consider it to be the best and the least offensive western SH title, with actually great atmosphere and story. The psychology trickery was pretty neat too, and makes the game very replayable. And fun to watch too, as different people tend to play differently and experience totally different things.

The Wii original is the definitive version, and it makes use of all its fancy gimmicks too.

Nah, he's just a narcissistic dick who only "loves" SH2 because of his head-canon separating it from the rest of the series' "stupid cult and demon shit".
And even then he hates just about everything in his "favorite" game in the series, to the point of wanting to rewrite its script, assign new VAs, and allow tons of major fuck ups in general.

His "own" SH games also demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of the series he so much apparently loves, not to mention not understanding good game-design in general.

I think the problem is the way it is implemented on PC. The Team-Silent's ex-artist, Masahiro Ito, did comment on the PS2's quite outstanding capabilities of handling complex transperent/ translucent textures. I bet the early-00s PC devs had to dumb these things down and make do with basic 8-bit alpha channels, meaning having a single noisy texture plane in front of the "camera", and making it a bit see-through.
This however can terribly wash out colors and details in the picture.

"Millennial" is not a new term. It's been around since 1990s, and coined in 00's business literature several times.

>>
>>386260519
One huge negative for this game imo is the lack of monster variety. For the most part there is 3 common monster types. There are the roaches which are a bit less common and also have that cool part where you are locked in the room with them. Then there is the door monster which comes late game. The other monster is so rare it was perhaps a waste even including it.

>>
>>386279601
True. Though I do personally think that it's a matter of quality over quantity. With the themes going on with the foes, you can't really go all nuts without the designs starting to border the potentially cheesy and ridiculous levels.
>>
>>386279807
They still could have made a little more. Even just 2 more that are at least as common as the roaches would have made all the difference. There are plenty of other games that don't have too much different enemy types because as you said quality is more important but with Silent Hill you do run through the town. So I feel it would have added more to the game to have just a couple more monster types. A fast moving monster would have been perfect for the running through town parts.
>>
>>386279767
The old fart is right. Nobody but team Silent should ever touch the franchise again.

On the contrary. The "Baby boomers", AKA Gen-Y, is nowadays THE biggest living generation, and one of the reasons for the dreaded upcoming senior-wave, which risks to leave many entire countries under-employed in a couple decades.

The term "Millennial" originally originated from our elders' idea of a "generation that were born to see the turn of the millennium", "those who would live and rule in the 21st century". A bit later on, thanks to the big IT boom kicking off, people started adding in descriptions like "IT native" to the term.

Source: I did an entire research project on the matter in University few years ago.

So once again, if you wanna yell at them kids at your lawn who are ruining everything, use the term "Gen Z". Maybe help come up some sort of a name for them.

I get what you mean, but people also need to finally accept that besides a handful of well known key-members and some background workhorse people no one cares about, "Team-Silent" was never a one, single, unchanging group of people.

After Konami forcefully broke down TS after SH4, some of the members became freelancers. Many were taken in by Kojima Productions. Some set up their own teams, like SH1's director did and started developing the Forbidden Siren.

My personal, somewhat realistic best-case-scenario would be Konami finally giving up with video games, auctioning its IPs, resulting the new Kojima Productions purchasing the rights to Silent Hill.

Your specs? Your in-game and Widescreen-fix settings? Did the game run OK before?

The most common culprit people don't know to inspect is the game's own 3D Rendering Resolution in the options, which goes to whooping 8K res (4096x4096). And that, my friend, will make even modern gaming PCs genuflect.
However, the new fix SHOULD set it to "0", AKA "match player's screen resolution", by default.

Well I'm no wordsmith but I guess I'll start with saying I was never interested in them until my little brother got me into em.

I was visiting family and my little brother kept messaging me that he bought the Silent Hill collection for us to experience together, I should note my brother rarely speaks to me but I figured he was too scared to play these games by himself so he expected me to do it for him.

So I did, when I came I started with Silent Hill 1, which he had even bought from the classics section on the PS3 beforehand, and we enjoyed the eerie atmosphere together. He liked the cult aspect, I didn't. Fun game.

Then it came to the next two games, and I was aware of the infamous reputation of the HD collection, we both were. Unfortunately, my brother kept insisting that I play them so I tried, only to be met with a buggy wall of shit that was the redone Silent Hill 2 off the collection. I told him it was stupid and there were better ways to play a legendary game, so I hopped on the archives and found a link to download the next three games, probably from one of you guys on /v/. And just as I expected, the game played far better and even exceeded my expectations. Unfortunately, that also meant I could only play it on my laptop at night, alone, and my little brother couldn't get to experience Silent Hill 2 and 3 with me. I still feel very guilty about it. I got the Leave ending, Mary forgave me, but something tells me my brother hasn't just yet.

We have a complicated relationship, and these games have helped us with that. I think I might redeem myself by playing Silent Hill 4 by connecting my laptop to a TV screen so he can watch me play it, it's his favorite game because of what he's read about it, but I still feel terrible.

I know this isn't what you expected, but these games have been an amazing emotional outlet for me, outside of just being great games. Which they are.
>>
>>386282321
As much as i love him and agree with him on In Water being the best ending, no SH2 ending is truly canon. Neither the writer nor director has come down on it, and the only reference to James we get is in SH4 when it's mentioned that he disappeared while in Silent Hill wtih Mary. Any of the four endings could follow after that.

Nice little story.
I sure as hell don't mind hearing some personal tales related to finding and experiencing these games either. I personally got into the series veeery early on when SH1 was still brand new (and I was around 10), and later on this series has helped me connect with many damn great people.
Not to mention some direct and indirect gains, like getting fascinated by human psychology, symbolism as a story-telling method, and all the fancy game-design ideologies and tricks TS incorporated (the release PAL version of SH2 came with the Making Of -video, which was just pure gold mine to the fans).

I don't get why someone would be mad about experiencing these games at your own pace. Horror works the best when you're alone, in the dark, volume cranked up. If anything, your bro should certainly (re-) experience the rest of the games in similar fashion.

Guys who got to work with Team-Silent often describe them with terms like "workaholics" and "detail maniacs". It's not hard to see why; they pushed themselves and their co-workers hard, never stopping at just "good enough". Even SH1 was stocked full of fine details you may literally never see on the original hardware; entire areas and buildings you cannot access, lots of detailed clutter in areas that are hard to see, etc.

They also practically followed that artschool rule of thumb of "if at some point of an act you bring a gun to the stage, it needs to be fired", meaning don't introduce truly pointless elements at any point.

Besides TS, both original ID Software and Capcom with its original Resident Evil games also followed this simple idea of making every scene and room somehow interesting and memorable. That level of customization and hand-crafting is a slowly dying practice nowadays, when entire buildings and whole landscapes are simply copy-pasted around in some games.
>>
>>386282321
Even though a VA for a character isn't really the authority on the canon (and who cares besides the games being good) I'm glad to see a voice actor get really into the game they're a part of.
>>
>>386284740
Voice actor, motion-capture actor, AND the facial model for the James, actually. All while under strict directing of Team-Silent, who made sure to not let the actors learn the whole story of the game before the end, and not even theorize about the ending(s) early on.

Not to mention the devs themselves have stated ITW to be their favorite, and the most fitting end.

Still way more challenging and risky than just downloading and playing the PC ports.

For starters, the consoles alone (and I mean without any sort of cords or controllers) tend to go for around 50 bucks these days. More than that if they're pre-modded. Many of these 2nd hand machines also suffer of the most common issue: broken DVD drive.

And then you gotta find 50kg tube-TV from 90s? Beyond all reasonable limits, unless you already own one. Not to mention I just last week dug out my own PS2 Slim + SH2 & 3, played them for a while on my 1080p LED TV, and they looked very nice even like that.

>You could always just emulate the PS2 version,
And expose yourself to the horrors of the terri-bad PS2 emulation? Not to mention unless you're running a 800+ buck computer, it's most likely NOT an option.

Meanwhile, the PC ports run even on a 10 year old craptop at HD resolutions, with very little effort.

>others lack proper sound
Stop believing everything you see and hear on Youtube. I own both PS2 and PC versions of these games, and the only audio difference I ever noticed was the bit too loud confirmation-effect when surfing the menus in SH2.

SH3 and 4 are literally identical, if not even vastly superior to the PS2 versions.
The lack of soft-shadowing on NPCs is a non-issue and a matter of taste. PC does however pack proper Per-Pixel lighting, which results completely smooth flashlight beam - something that PS2 cannot do, and thus it has blockly flashlight lighting.

I guess you've already learned about the Fog Fix, as you didn't mention the difference in fog effects.

That just mean you got a strong PC and good enough tweaks going on. PS2 emulation still is far from perfect, and quite pointlessly convoluted too.

>>386291413
>The prison section is extra scary on ps2 because of that sweet 3d audio
You mean the simulated 3D audio created by mere Stereo playback, which people praised back in the days? The type that requires your own room's layout to be precise for the effect to work properly?

Yeah, easily achieved on a PC too. The effects way superior with headphones, not to mention when coupled with all the hardware mixing effects PC packs.

>>386291568
It's not. Like said, I barely ever noticed the difference. And I've played SH2 alone over 20 times in past 15 years

Why? If anything theaters and movie theaters are probably some of the biggest cliches in horror media, with very limited uses.

"Wooo, your dark past is shown on the stage / silver screen~! The empty & dark spectators' area gets filled with...something!"

The games are available online and physically to anyone that seeks them out, nothing is stopping people from playing them today, they just have to put a little effort, the kind of person that doesn't want to put the effort is probably not going to enjoy this type of game anyways.
>>
>>386292745
Or they can get them on PC in some way.

I dunno about that... When REmake HD was released out of the fucking blue, tons of people swarmed to buy it instantly. Both fans of the series and newcomers. It actually sold so well, that Capcom was slightly startled, and they ended up not only shipping RE0 HD in record time, but also finally started working on REmake 2 project.

Gameplay-wise, Silent Hills work very similarly, so I doubt there'd be that huge culture shock. Heck, SH2 and up even had optional "casual" 2D controls available right from the beginning, something Remake HD gets criticized for.
Not to mention SH2-4 already do have working and proven PC versions. And the games are fully 3D, so there's really no need to "remaster" anything. Just crank up the resolution, maybe force some AF + AA on top, and you're done.

...Or that's how it'd work in a perfect world. The biggest obstacle here would be Konami themselves; not only their general uninterested attitude towards games and SH series, but also their already proven hate towards the idea of having to pay royalties for the old voice-actors and devs for re-releasing yet another set of new versions of these games. I bet they already learned the hard way that the new VAs and poorly remixed OST wouldn't cut it any more.

>requires your own room's layout to be precise for the effect to work properly
I dunno about that. I played it on a really unconventionally shaped room and the effect was really good. I think that if you have the will to do it the absolute best way to play sh 2 is on original hardware

Not denying that. The original is the original, after all.
However, more and more people are finding it increasingly difficult to not only to go back to 480i visuals, but also to find required hardware and software to do so. And the collectors won't give up their stuff away for cheap.

I do also find people to greatly exaggerate the power-gap between PS2 and PC versions.
And I swear this shit started only recently, within this very year or so. Some folks are trying to make the PC port sound like similar spawn of Satan as the motherfucking HD Collection.

If you do want to experience the original SH quadrilogy, in 4K Ultra widescreen + Dolby 5.1 system, without content cuts, game-breaking bugs and pure ear-rape voice acting, then the PC ports are the best and only choice there is.
And there is nothing to be worried or ashamed about playing them like this.

He doesn't need to really. Just run WinXP via VM, and you can instantly play SH2-4 in the original, authentic form, without fixes or shit.

Wouldn't be too surprised if even WINE could get the job done, knowing that these games use mere DirectX7 and 8.

>And I swear this shit started only recently, within this very year or so.

It's the Sonyfags being prideful and nostalgic.

In recent times, the fan patches have made the PC version of SH2 very close to the PS2 version and in SH3's case, even superior to the PS2 version, with 60fps at all times with higher resolution DoF and high resolution dynamic shadows.

The appearance of fan-patches that did all that really caught me off guard. Didn't expect the DOF and shadows to be so easily fixed, but here we are!

SH3 however was always the best port of the bunch. Probably one of the best console-2-PC ports ever, especially considering its age.

>PS1 emulators can now fix the wobbly polygons and textures and render games at insane resolutions + inject shader and filter effects.
>SH2 PC no longer needs manual affinity-tweaks, the menu transitions are quick and fog can be made very THICC if you so desire.
>SH3 can now run at steady 60fps with greatly enhanced shadows and DOF effects.
>SH4 no longer suffers of 15fps cutscenes and eye-rape DOF.

All this, within the past couple short years. All thanks to the burning passion of the fans.

Bitch, please. Maria is the most appropriate one. James doesn't appear to change at all over the course of the story. Leave or In Water require that he either overcome his guilt or succumb to it, but he just kind of shambles through the town unphased while Angela and Eddie fall to pieces. That being considered, doesn't Maria's coughing at the end seem like the most fitting fate? It suggests they are both doomed to repeat the whole thing over again because of James and his inability to move on.

Could you provide some more information?
Like, where'd you get the game (the links above or elsewhere), what's your OS and mounting software (Daemon Tools, Windows8-10's own thing...?), and did you launch the installer via the autostart menu...?

Or did you perhaps get it already fixed?

ePSXe still gives me the best performance out of all the competition. It also doesn't suffer of the randomly happening bug of none of my input methods registering anything at all.

Latest version is almost on-par with PCSX-R and its features. GTE Accuracy hack was implemented long time ago for example.

The town wouldn't have to change anything.
>James appears to have erased all recollection of the murder from his memory
>If James chooses Maria, he leaves town with a replacement for Mary
>If she were to get ill and he kill her, he would likely repress the memory all over again
>If James chooses Maria and has a history of repressing unpleasant memories, there is no reason to believe Mary couldn't have been a copy of someone else like Maria was
>James is mentioned in SH4 as having gone missing because he has been out in the world with his Marias, going back to Silent Hill again and again, consumed with guilt and grief as he watches the replacement for his lost love die over and over, forgetting each time and subconsciously returning to Silent Hill so the can can offer him another doomed replacement
