That style of gameplay is found more in pre-WotC editions of D&D than in WotC editions. Especially because the schools of magic kind of lost some relevance in 3.0, then pretty much lost all significance in Pathfinder. 4e does away with them entirely, and 5e services them by name but nothing more. Warriors didn't start getting more fancy attacks (outside of dragon magazines) until The Complete Warrior in 2e, and then later molded into 3.0 proper.
