I can't get into the Advance series. The Special Stage system is utterly retarded and honestly Advance 2 it's completely pointless to play as anybody but Sonic or Cream

Rush Adventure should've been better if it wasn't padded by shitty cutscenes and unnecessary, tacked on mechanics. In Rush you just hit Start and you're thrown right into the game. Rush Adventure you're forced to skip through a 15 minute cutscene

Combine Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles in such a way that the lock on tech never happened and it was one game from the start. You can change Flying Battery to play after Carnival Night like how it was in a prototype, change the music to Sonic 3 style all the way through, change the music for CN, IC and LB to the Sonic & Knuckles Collection tracks, fixes a bunch of bugs and just cleans everything up. It's the best thing we got next to a Taxman remake.

Taxman mentioned in a recent interview that the original plan for Mania was a small, modest game full of original content bundled together with his remasters of Sonic 1 and 2.

There's always a chance that could have carried over into the final product and they've decided to leave it as a secret until release. An incredibly small chance, but still. At least it confirms that we'll be seeing them on other platforms eventually.

I'm not an adventure cuck. But since that matter came up. I will say Adventure had some good ideas, that I feel is a shame that Sega Team gave up on. Instead of improving and polishing the good ideas, they outright dropped them. Fact is, Sonic Team is an incompetent developer when it comes to game design. The majority of Adventure's flaws comes from unrefined physics, and unrefined mechanics.

The problem was never the fact that it had too many characters. That's the test of the moron. Anyone who complains about the amount of character in Sonic, is a moron. The problem with the game, is that every bit of it was like the alpha build of a good game. None of it felt complete.

Like take grinding for example. Detection is finicky, you can't reliably switch rails without fear that Sonic will simply clip through them and plummet. It's a mess. So what did Sonic Team do for future games? Did they refine the rails? No. They just casualized it to the point where rails might as well not be in the game. No when you switch, your character does a big retarded arch, and magnetizes to the rail. The arching jump takes so long to perform, that any obstacles placed along the track, must account for the jump time. So they hardly put any obstacles on rail tracks anymore. And they don't let you jump off the sides of rails anymore.
Rails are more or less cinematic spectacles.

Point being: Adventure games are good in concept. Even if their execution was poorly done by an incompetent developer. If you didn't like Adventure at one point, then you're probably only 16 years old and never played them when they were new. Or you simply don't appreciate what they were going for. Because that would actually require an open mind. Something classicfags lack. Classicfags only want what they're already familiar with.

You've got the best coder and engine developer in the Sonic fangame community with Taxman, the best level designer in the Sonic fangame community with Stealth, and some of the best artists in the Sonic fangame community with Pagoda West. Lost World wasn't the best game but it at least had interesting new gameplay concepts that just got bogged down with bad level design. All of the parkour shit was great and I hope it comes back in the future. The kick thing could be refined into something that makes more sense, the ability to kick enemies into other enemies speeds up combat and does have the potential to be very functionally different from a homing attack where the primary focus is air mobility and locking on to important objects. Sonic 4 added nothing but garbage level design.

Basically instead of properly adapting old sonic, or just going with the strength of new sonic they try to recreate old sonic with set piece and spectacle. Then they add some shitty gimmick on top and a load of 2D stuff cause they lack confidence in the base game they have made.

Think I'm the actual only 4fag here, I started all the other 4 discussion up above too.

I don't think it's best Sonic, but it is my favorite mainline 2D Sonic, meaning, yes, I like it over CD and 1-3. I use 4 as a fun stress reliever, something I just romp through when I'm feeling down or tired or something and don't feel like doing anything else. I find it a lot easier easier to maintain forward momentum yet also explore multiple paths with Tails' flying ability. I just find it to be overall more fun, especially with the Red Rings since I have a hard-on for those.

I have all the 2D games on Steam, 1-3 look terribly stretched and it just feels uncomfortable to play without actual widescreen, I love the CD remaster though and it's right behind 4 for me. That being said, I'm still very very very excited for Mania and have it preordered on Steam thanks to a very generous Anon.

Nope, I got into gaming really late due to strict and orthodox immigrant parents, my first Sonic game was actually Sonic Genesis on the GBA.
Then I played the Advance and later Rush games, first console game was Heroes, then jumped to Colors and played every game onwards barring 4. Played 1-3 2 years ago, CD and 4 last year.

The OC creator really should've been the centerpiece of its own game. I know people love memeing about how Sonic rips of Dragon Ball, but a Sonic XenoVerse would've been absolutely perfect. If you're still unimpressed by 1 and 2, and it's 3K's level design and music alone you find enjoyable, I don't think you've truly grasped the genius of the games, and 4's true faults.

Give the four of them (1, 2, CD, and 3K) another playthrough some time, and while playing, abuse the FUCK out of rolling; use it as an attack when you approach a badnik on the ground; make sure you do it every time you hit a speed booster, spring, or begin going downhill.

When you're going fast up a slope, jump at the peak of it for massive air.

When you jump and land on an enemy or monitor below you, make sure you're holding down the jump button for an incredible rebound back to your original height.

I'll post a few webms to help illustrate some of this stuff.

No guarantee that you'll stop liking 4, and there's no need for you to do so. But gaining a true appreciation for the depth of the mechanics inherent to the original quartet is paramount to understanding why 4 really comes up short for most of us.

Also: if you're playing on PC, I recommend just emulating 1, 2, and 3K (play the Sonic 3 Complete ROM hack) in Kega Fusion. Or try and pick up Mega Collection if you have a console that'll play it. And lastly, you're playing with a controller, right?

Thank you based Anon, I replay CD almost as much as I replay 4, honestly the only thing holding it back for me is that the spindash just doesn't feel very powerful, It's a small thing but it matters to me for some reason. I definitely will go back to 1-3 eventually though, especially if I love Mania. What you've displayed is still possible in 4 to some degree, but I can very clearly see its faults compared to just what you can do with 1-3's physics.

Doesn't help that 4 essentially has two engines, episodes were a mistake.

The original underpowered spindash works in CD, because it keeps the Super Peel Out from being obselete. Peel Out is stronger, while Spin Dash is safer. Of course, you could just roll right after a Peel Out, but that's a tad more esoteric, considering how few people think to roll in general.

Yeah, unfortunately, both of 4's engines fail to live up. And it's not just a fault of Sonic 4. Both Generations and Forces (from what we've seen) likewise fail to grasp the basic mechanics.

Notice in the examples for 1, 2, and 3 there, it's literally just gravity that's making you go fast down these hills. In the modern games (4, Generations, etc) you would be incapable of going this fast on your own, and would instead be propelled by a series of boosters.

Was actually just playing Generations right now to see how it feels compared to 4 and CD, and god it feels terrible. Jumps are static and don't vary on button press, quick spindashes don't come out in only 1-2 charges, startup feels really slow, it just feels wrong, especially with the abundance of boosters. 4 suffers from the booster problem as well, but I've been able to circumvent it and just have fun by flying around with Tails in Episode II, the exploration is nowhere near as grand as something liek CD, but finding all the Red Rings is fun.

Also, if you haven't already done this, you should get the good ending of CD without the time stones. Travel to the past in each level, and find both the robot generator and the Metal Sonic hologram.

It takes some dedicated exploration to find the past signs and the things you need to destroy, and it takes some experimentation to find a good spot to maintain a constant top speed in order to time travel. But it's very worth it. That's what the level design is built around.

Colors was absolutely not play it safe.

First the colors themselves could have been badly received, also it featured more 2D levels as opposted to 3D levels, this helps the player appreciate the atmosphere and stay in levels longer, building a connection with each planet you visit.

The boost levels in Unleashed or Generations were built for pure speed with reflex jumping. Colors was more exploratory and closer to the kind of platforming you'd do in the classic games.

Act 1 will be similar to the old level, remixed layout but returning setpieces and elements. Act 2 is an entirely new take of the original stage. New gameplay concepts and new elements.
