I can hazard a guess. I've been in a few /vg/ threads that started out okay for a few weeks. Suddenly, someone creates a Discord. People join it and things are okay for a bit. Then the discord faggots start coming up with le epic memes and start shitting up the threads even harder than they're normally shat up. Identities start becoming more of a thing on an anonymous imageboard and animosity starts to grow between the posters and the discord faggots. The discord faggots basically become their own community and only exist to shit up the general.

So basically, don't make a Discord for your general and never let anyone else make one either.

Basically the same people posting in the same threads, you can basically tell people apart after a while, then you'll end up getting avatar fags, or waifu fags, or name fags, or fags who rp.
Then you get the discords or the skype groups going but that's not all the time. But then you get the faggot who gets ostracized, he gets mad and has his feefees hurt and will never let it go, he's too obsessed with the thread, with the community.
So he'll never leave, he'll do whatever he can to ruin the thread and it'll never stop until it's gone forever

/ssbg/ used to be pretty active with over 100+ unique IPs per thread, then a couple namefags just spammed it with their drama shit so much and ran competing Discords that everyone unanimously agreed to just kill the general. Every couple months you see someone trying to make a new /ssbg/ and it gets like 2 replies at most.

Circa 2012-2013 /smtg/ was a pretty nice general that had a steady stream of OC being made, game discussion, people watching streams of the bad movies and just hanging out.
After SMT IV came out some autist that came to be known as SJ Cap Anon just started spamming the general with hundreds of Strange Journey screencaps he had taken. He derailed every single conversation over time into people talking about SJ, or SJ vs. other games. It slowly devolved into pure shitposting and people erupting into anger if someone tried to bring up other games. It calmed down over time but /smtg/ never really recovered from this, especially after SMT x FE got announced.

The more fascinating part of this story is because of the aftermath. The SMT community online has always been fragmented and transient, to the point where /smtg/ is the longest running and biggest community. You can trace the same people that are just taking screencaps and pictures from /smtg/ and posting them on Twitter and other forums and watch as they just immediately start circlejerking SJ in mid-2013 out of nowhere, and other people follow suit. It's fucking bizarre.

The best general for any multiplayer game I've ever seen was /ink/ and that was because everyone in it was honestly incredibly autistic about not even mentioning each other's in game names aside from MAYBE saying ggs after a lobby, in which case people would still bitch about it.

It did keep the general clean of most of the other shit that stinks up other genreals, with the exception of the first 10 posts in every thread being identical just like in all the other ones.

I'm from /tg/. I can vouch for this. There was a 5th Edition general on there, and they made a discord that I was a member of for a few months. There was a shit ton of stupid drama, the icing on the shit cake being when a confirmed male user slowly changed their name, then started making up a shitty female personality that just mounted lie after lie after lie after lie onto "her"self. The stupid thing is, he got a SHITTON of beta-orbiters and white knights feeding him attention, despite like 90% of his posts being either complaining about daddy issues or repeating the ONE meme over and over and over again.

It culminated with someone gathering a shit ton of evidence that she was a he who had been lying to the chat and spamming it with poorly drawn porn over months. They dumped the evidence in the chat and left. Was most likely a sock-puppet. The sole mod and owner of the chat was one of the beta orbiters and considered the shitton of physical evidence "harassment" and even though he banned him and a bunch of other people for "causing drama", let the dude back in. That was around the time I disappeared and for good.
