A dungeon crawler that has been in development for 23 years by a crazy neanderthal is releasing tomorrow.

For anyone new to this man's madness, we're not insulting him when we call him a neanderthal. He calls himself that. He thinks neanderthals were/are superior to homo sapiens and that he is one of the last neanderthals.

I read the entire Wizardry 4 LP yesterday.
I feel like a monkey dancing on the palm of Buddha all this time, nothing I ever played could ever be compared to how bullshit this thing is.
When I retire I actually want to play this blind, hopefully I'll have long forgotten the things I learned in the LP.

There's no market in pandering to morons. I wouldn't want to make that kind of money.

Grimoire is an elite game that is unlike anything else up on the Steam store. I defy you to find anything like it in the thousands of games listed. I defy you to find a game like it on the planet. It's not even a Wizardry clone really - it's everything Wizardry should have been but never was.

I'm not competing with Sir-Tech any more. Amongst other reasons, they went bankrupt 17 years ago.

I'm not competing with anybody. Grimoire is the pinnacle of the peak of the summit of the incline. I could probably get 99.95 from a lot of people but I don't want to limit it just to the very elect of RPG players. I made a compromise and and priced it somewhere just under current AAA titles. The truth is there is not an AAA title you could buy nowadays that deserves to crawl up on a high chair and plant a kiss in the crack of Grimoire's ass when it comes to enjoyment, immersion and wonderful escape.

I say all this with confidence because I have been playing my game 12 hours a day for two months and I can assure you there has never been anything like it in all of recorded human history. It's the greatest thing ever to emerge from that genre. The fact is, people who enjoy that genre are considering it cheap at that price. If you are not a connoisseur of the genre then why would I amend anything in it to appeal to you? It's like saying Mozart needed more cowbell.

Trust what I am saying. Those of you who played the demo and got the scent of greatness will know the full game has achieved it. For whatever it lacks it has much more in abundance.

I was just playing Kublai Cathedral to check all the logic and was almost weeping tears of joy at how wonderfully told the story of everything is in the game. I had forgotten a lot of it and it was like reading the work of someone else.
>>
The game will suck you mentally into another dimension of win and excellence, no kidding. I warn unstable people against playing it at all. If it becomes that kind of obsession with the author - who should be long tired of it by now - you can imagine what elite fans RPGs will feel.

The game is special. I have supercharged it with awesomeness right down to the atomic level of every bit in the digital binary. $39.95 is very cheap once you have played the game for a short while.

Grimoire is a quality game for distinguished monocle wearing top hat and tuxedo connoisseurs of roleplaying games. This is not another whackamole begware lowest common denominator sewer skimming bottom feeding title. I would recommend that regular Steam consumers have a doctor standing by before playing Grimoire as the shock to the system could lead to a trip to the emergency room. It's not like anything they are used to seeing up here. This is the true old skool goodness. You may think you are prepared but rest assured you probably have not seen this much awesomeness anywhere in the past 20 years.

I'm wondering though: is this guy just roleplaying in all his posts and other outings?
>>
>>383036816

>then make a 5 or 6 parties

The problem is nu-gamers who play CRPGs and even tabletops tend to be powergaming tards who wouldn't purposefully gimp their party or character for any reason whatsoever, even if it's for the benefit of their experience (or the benefit of their roleplaying). They're the kind of dudes who open up Pillars of Eternity and spend 45 minutes minmaxing their new character in the character creation screen only to drop the game after level 4 not because the game itself bored them but because the game is "too balanced" and they can't become that super powerful unstoppable godslayer with as much ease as they want without turning down the difficulty or cheating. They're the kind of dudes who ask the DM to remove their character from the party so they can reroll a mere 3 sessions into a DnD campaign because they missed five times in a row and the Barbarian got to take all the glory.

No shit but that's not my point, my point is RPGs lend themselves to a powergaming mentality where lots of limp-wristed noodlets aren't satisfied with their pretend character simply doing something, they want to be the BEST at doing it, and not just that one thing but they want to be the BEST at everything else.

We don't know how the development load was distributed over those years. He might be digging up this project he abandoned 15 years ago, or he might've been constantly working on it and updating some of the more dated elements with QoL changes (it does have automap and whatnot, after all). Honestly I have no idea what's going on inside his head, there's a fifty percent chance he's intentionally overhyping an unfinished and dated product to make as much money on initial 40 dollar sales as possible and a fifty percent chance it's actually solid or even very good and he was only overhyping it because he's a spastic narcissist and thinks his turds are made of solid gold

Hey, cro-fagnons, it doesn't fucking matter how good you think the game is gonna be.

We already KNOW how good the game is. These are its stats. This is mathematical EVIDENCE on why Grimoire is the greatest video game ever made.

Only ONE DAY LEFT. The incline approaches, whether you want it to or not.

Well, Fallout 4 still had Bethesda's marketing team on that. They spouted a bunch of shit after it was released, certainly.

I'm mostly talking about artists, game designers, movie directors, etc who are full of themselves in interviews and the like. My favorite ones are usually the ones who just love what they're doing, and don't have to say anything.

People like the chucklefuck making Grimoire are more interested in inflating their own ego than making art, or something fun.

Corwin doesn't know what he is missing, seriously. The game is x infinity better than the version he tested.

Listen to what I was double-checking today. You're not going to believe it.

So I freed Q'Orl from the Royal Bestiary and he left to go to the Astral Plain. I also fought the cockatrice here and got the braid.

After sawing off the lock at [REDACTED] I noticed it was pretty solid gold so I spoke to one of the thieves in the woods about it. He told me something amazing - that there was a smith in Crowl who could work a piece of raw gold like that into some pretty spectacular armour. I took it back to Smithy and he told me to leave it with him, he'd see what he could do.

I went off and had some amazing adventures in a dungeon to the far west and discovered a Djinn Bottle. I got the Djinn to reveal the secret page for me and later I asked him to transport us to the Astral Plain. We met up with Q'Orl again and he gave us something very special in reward for traveling so far to see him again. We moongated back to Dominion Wilderness outside the city and I spent some time forging a recommendation letter for Shrike to see if we could join up with the Vanguard.

I went back to see Smithy, stopping at another weird cave for some excellent rewards before arriving back in Crowl. I was increasingly getting pretty fitted out, the entire party was wielding some pretty serious weapons and magic.

Smithy had made me the best armor in the game, the golden armor. Pretty pimped out at this point, plus two resurrected party members from bones and one of the Ego entities had joined us and they had gargantua stats. Was getting in shape to beat up some of the toughest monsters in the game. All this happened today just wandering around testing and double-checking various elements of gameplay.

It's not "too hard." It's obviously micro-managey, and it means the game will be balanced for having that tediously huge as fuck party. These types of games are the digital spawn of D&D, which has a very tight archetypical fighter/thief/cleric/wizard setup.

Is Final Fantasy too complicated as well? That has plenty of stats, not that you exactly need to pay attention to most. As is true for Wizadry and many roguelikes as well. You focus on just what is relivent for the moment/build. But I guess asking /v/ to think about what they're doing for a minute is just too much.

He made over 200 maps. I can spend 20 hours and only get like 2 minutes of content going in level editors. And that's without having to do the art, content, and programming.

I think he just didn't know when to stop and call it a day. If he started mapping linearly starting from the beginning of the game, he fucked up.
>>
If any sape is interested in trying out the demo from 2013 before spending 40 bucks on something he might or not might like, here it is:

filedropper DOT COM SLASH grimoiredemov131

Enjoy.

God, fuck you you subhuman chink Moot and your retarded anti-spam system!
>>
How many people are gonna get into dungeon crawlers because of this hype?
Not neccessarily Grimoire, other games from the genre
>>
If this game is really 600+ hours of actual main story content, I will be really impressed.

As someone with a friend who obsesses over D&D campaigns, I'm actually really interested to see the result of 25 fucking years of autism. If he really has just been expanding on this game for that long, I think I might understand why he's so confident.

Some of them literally were like pic related was an infamous reviewer that gave M&M2 a bad review because she couldn't figure out a puzzle at the end of the game. M&M3 had fully animated sprites you could see ahead of you and attack before reaching the same tile at a time when just about everything was pop up encounters for JRPGs. They were all localized for Japan as well.

Watching Ullillia gives me a headache etc. My former colleague was highly functioning autist with ocd. He literally couldn't leave the office if he still had tasks to do. He stayed at the office every day until 10-11pm at least. And the way he spoke, only that gave me stress. He seemed to do every deadline without stress and now he is in management position but still spends his time at the office slaving away while his wife waits at home with a kid. (Industry related to games). I don't like these kind of people because they are not human and I don't understand where the fuck all that energy comes from. As if he was never tired. There was always just one thing in his mind: the current work related issues and work task.

Wizardry IV is an in-joke like 99% of the time. It's enjoyable as fuck if you're not a kid in the 80's trying to get through it blind. The true ending is one of the funniest joke endings I've seen ever done in games or any other media, it comes so out of nowhere and requires you to solve such a bullshit puzzle that I've spent a week just laughing about it after finally getting it. Some of the gags in-game are also really funny, even the more murderous ones, and the bit where devs just throw all their IRL friends in as kings and queens is one of the most breathtaking no fucks given moments I've ever seen. This scenario is like a complete middle finger to everything dungeon crawl-related ever. It may not be fun on the battle-to-battle basis, but you have to admire its inventiveness at the very least.

Honestly, there's no reason to play the original Avernum when EFTP exists, since it's almost exactly the same game but with fewer bugs, better graphics and more content. Avernums 1-3 aren't really worth playing anymore, since 1 and 2 have been remade, and 3 will likely come out in the near future (4-6 is a separate trilogy and worth playing though).

Geneforge looks like ass and I don't blame anyone for passing it up, but it's got a really interesting storyline and gameplay mechanics, you just have to steel for yourself for how painfully outdated the first game looks (it's also pretty basic too, in the sense that there's like 3 spells in the entire game or something)

Yeah, I mean Avernum itself is a remake of Exile, so EFTP is actually the third time it's been remade. It also has stuff like quest journals now, and also moving around the map is a lot easier.

Okay, this fucking demo:
-terrible portraits
-every race except eyes is just a different kind of furry or other traditional shit with a "fancy" name
-only three stat rerolls, after that you either go with the third one or start the character from scratch. Annoying as fuck, but wouldn't be a giant problem if I wasn't absolutely sure this guy is the kind of guy to fuck you up later in the game for not rolling perfect 32s for every char.
-you don't actually use rolled points, they are attributed automatically and sometimes the game lets you decide where to dump 'bonus points', as many as 20-25. Some options are vague as fuck - hitpoints, skill points for characters that don't have skills yet, attributes and DESTINY.
-When you choose spells, there isn't even the slightest explanation for them
Even the character creation is fucking faggy, holy crap

I played it for two hours today and the game is GUD.

It's a classic dungeon crawler through and through and it delivers on that promise.
It is obviously not your cup of tea, as you sound very spoiled by modern mechanics and graphics and sound very young. The game is very archaic but again, that's what he promised all those years and some of us here dig exactly that old and overripe flavour.

this is the problem with games designed by autists, no concept of what's fun for functioning human beings
>>
Next up, the gameplay itself:
-walking and turning can make you barf
-absolutely ugly textures
-a battle with three worms and a bug took 10 turns, because everything takes a dozen or so hits to kill, lol
-during said battle i wasn't hit once
-there's a button on the battlescreen called endgame, that just instantly gameovers you without any confirmation screen
-in a battle with a fucking plant my thrice blessed party spent 10 turns wacking on it and getting only 'no penetration' messages, because the plant has different parts, like groups of enemies, but unlike groups, you can't target them
This is a game of bad decisions, I see

I'm old as shit and have played through most things under the sun. The game lacks polish, has atrocious controls and standard conventions like a quick attack button or other QoL features that make randomized battles more bearable.

Compared to wizardy 8, there seems to be less focus on party formation, and no strategic way to avoid fights since they just pop on the screen. I am not a fan of this approach. The games UI is also childish and the text is in a hard to read spot at the bottom of the screen, an area you'd think would be dedicated to other UI elements and you'd see dialog front and center.

UI is garbage, controls are outdated, strategic combat is non-existent since all battles are randomly generated. I have no reason to revisit archaic styles of gameplay when I could play this games betters from other developers

apparently not.

Not uncommon in dungeon crawlers

you obviously used the wrong strategy on it, doofus

Don't blame the game for you being retarded.

Is it possible to have fun with this if I've never played any of the old wizardry or wizardry-style games?

Should I pirate it? The dev seems like a huge chode
>>
Oh god, why is every battle so long? Characters lose vitality point for guarding, which is why after just two battles my mages are whacking a plant with their quarterstaffs. Plants, as I found out, could only be killed by kicking the peapod with a precise strike, which happens at random.
>>383066417
It doesn't quit, it just gameovers you to the main menu. What's the point?
>>383066490
I know this is bait, but random battles in Wizardry resolved in 3 turns tops. And there's no strategy involved so far, since melee characters don't have skills and casters can't cast for shit. You should try the demo tho, it's pretty fantastically atrocious.

Yes. I played the demo. It's absolutely fine. There are some questionable choices regarding the UI but other than that it gives you EXACTLY what you saw in that pitch video. So, I went to character screens during the game and three out of eight characters had about 20 skill points to spend. Why couldn't I just do that shit while creating the chars? It's just a bad decision, since you probably won't immediately pull up the stats of the characters you just created, thus making your chars actively shittier for some time. Not that they became less shitty after that, all 8 couldn't hit a fish in the pond for another 6 turns.

All of that honestly sounds like it would be an unintuitive nightmare to figure out if you weren't the guy who made it, because you KNOW that almost every single one of those things are very specific instances that only happen if you do very specific things.

Odds are you need to choose to saw off that specific lock, think to pick it up, think to cast a prospecting spell on it to figure out it was gold, then find the smithy without getting it stolen and that's the only way to get the best armor in the game.

So, my final impression from the demo is as follows - three bandits engaged me in combat before I knew what was going on. They were, apparently, the boss of this first area and thus decimated my party, despite my fighter Bad Dragon's struggle to hit them with a spear. He didn't manage to do it even once, although there was a power level 6 blessing on him. I quicksaved in the area, but I'm not pining to play this any further. Maybe the final version is better. So far, it was pretty fucking bad. As an aside, if you want to grind in the demo, go to aqua-something dungeon through the gate. Slimes die fast and give comparatively high exp.
