I really like the Shadowrun games, and I've been trying to find other games like them.

Divinity: Original Sin is so cartoony that it's hard to get invested in anything.
I just bought underrail, but that seems to have the exact opposite problem where it's so realistic that it just comes off as dull.

Any other suggestions for games like the Shadowrun games?
>>
I guess this is the best place as any to ask, is the full collection of shadowrun returns worth it? also is it toaster friendly?

Yes, it's worth it. And, if it can run on a smartphone it can sure as hell run on a toaster.
>>
>>381716797
Totally worth it if you like story driven RPGs. You should play them in the order they were released though. Shadowrun Returns was first and is the most primitive of the 3, Dragonfall is the best and Hong Kong has the most evolved mechanics but the story isn't as good as Dragonfall.

I think one thing that I like from the Shadowrun games is their lack of focus on inventory management.

At least I can have hope for Harebrained making another Shadowrun game, right?

>>381719838

It's like you're playing the tabletop and it's the GM reading things out to you, describing what's going on and stuff.
>>
>>381720130
Yes, it captures that feeling quite well. I suppose it helps that the games were written by the people that created the tabletop RPG. If anyone knows how to set a scene in Shadowrun it would be them.
>>
>>381719006
The best part about shadowrun, in game or table top, is when it doesn't focus on just the job and instead is about the characters. The tabletop i'm in that's been going on two real years now would be nothing without good pc's and missions that focus on their place in the world.
>>
I wish the critical role team played shadowrun. So much potential

On the plus side, you can skip most of the conversations with those characters or cut them short. Most of them don't lead anywhere at all anyway. I think most of us go thru them expecting a payoff in the form of a new mission or something and it just never happens in HK.

Anyone that has played all 3 games can handle reading just fine. The fact is that HK was overwritten, NPCs would tell you their life stories at the drop of a hat, what would be a few sentences per conversation in the prior games took up paragraphs in HK and it was a slog to go thru. These games are slow paced to begin with but HK took it to excessive, nearly VN, lengths.

the problem with HK isnt the amount of dialog but the pacing. It's not good game design that you can spend an hour talking between missions but it only takes 20 to complete some

No you jackass, it's a problem with pacing. you have this long series of non-connected plotlines that offer limited player interaction and largely hold little to no relevance to the plot. Pacing is an important element to any story, and saying "suck it up faggot" is beyond asinine. It's a problem with the game, they needed to space that out more. Look at Dragonfall, more depth to the mission dialogue meant that they kept hub conversation less common and generally succinct, and you weren't spending one to two hours between every mission for the first three quarters of the game.

Christ, one of my favorite games is Planescape: Torment, and it dumps far larger quantities of text on the player, but it paces itself better by having it scattered amongst light exploration, skill checks, changing topics, etc.

The point is more content does not necessarily mean a better game. I seriously do not mind tons of words in a game (I like the fucking Trails series), in fact I didn't mind it in Hong Kong, but pretending that more = better is just stupid. Quality trumps quantity.

No commentary, just a soundtrack and an anthology of short stories about the characters in that game. Is it worth it? Hard to say, I have the hardcover edition of that anthology as I was a Kickstarter backer but I never actually read it.

Well talking to one of the side characters pays off hugely in HK, the others are just for flavor
>>

Yeah, it has potential, we'll see how well it handles the single player campaign for Battletech.
>>
>>381725309
3D environments work for something like Battletech where the scale is huge but they would take a whole lot more work for a ground level city environment and the hand drawn stuff they've been doing looks great, I think they should stick with what works.

I tell you, what I'd really like is a good Shadowrun stealth game but it seems like Harebrained schemes can't really do anything but RPGs.

I love how him and Gaichu are sort of opposites. Gaichu seeks to improve himself traditionally through combat and meditation while Racter wants to improve himself (and eventuall all of metahumanity) by merging with machines. Everyone else just sees them as the crazy old guy and the creepy ghoul.

Both of them back their ideologies up with philosophy and personal experience, and they both seek to change your view of the world. Whether you buy it or not is up to you.

It's hard for me to decide who I like more because both of them are well-written characters with interesting dialogue (and are very good in combat). I can't choose.

Speaking of HK has anyone done a playthru where they killed Gaichu, didn't recruit Racter and then betrayed the rest of the team at the end, killing them all to gain prosperity? That would make the bonus mini-campaign even more fucked up, you'd have 2 random mooks with you and I have no idea how the ending would play out given people that make that decision difficult are all dead.
>>
>>381726813
The girl that runs the shop that sells spells and outfits for mages/shamans
Gobbet sends you a message early on to ensure you talk to her even if you are a different class
>>
>>381726370
Yeah these two are the best of the HK crew, even more so if you build a char to be either a rigger or a street samurai.

Gaichu's quest is great, better than Racter's but Racter takes the cake when you debate philosophy and realise how far the guy is willing to go.

Gaichu is great as well but you don't get that "holy fuck" moment, with him it's like you at long last understand what it means to run the shadows.

I so fucking wanted a Shadorun game in Japan after doing Gaichu's questline.
>>
>>381726370
>Gaichu and Rachter were bonus characters that weren't going to be in the game unless they got a certain amount of funding
>but they committed to is0bel right out of the gate
Why? Is0bel is such a worthless character, she's so bad that she actually makes Gobbet seem bad simply because the two characters are so intertwined early on. Even Dead Man's Switch didn't have any characters near as unlikeable and irritating as Is0bel.

Is it weird if I think one of the best parts of Dragonfall was being able to go to the cafe to get some soykaf? It's just a small and comfy thing to do.
>>
>>381731073
Asking for soykaf while the guy looked at you with clear disdain was one of the funniest thing in the game.
>>
>>381730818

Video games need more orc girls to waifu. Elves get all the praise despite the fact that most elf women are massive cunts. Orc women, on the other hand, don't need much beyond food and something to smash (in the fighting sense and the sexual sense).

Eiger's a troll but she fits the bill as well despite her and Gobbet being polar opposites in terms of personality.

I just like my women with tusks.

The telephone rang. He pulled it into bed. `Yeah?'
`We're going to Istanbul,' Armitage said. `Tonight.'
`What does the bastard want?' Molly asked.
`Says we're going to Istanbul tonight.'
`That's just wonderful.'
Armitage was reading off flight numbers and departure times.
Molly sat up and turned on the light.
`What about my gear?' Case asked. `My deck.'
`Finn will handle it,' said Armitage, and hung up.
Case watched her pack. There were dark circles under her
eyes, but even with the cast on, it was like watching a dance.
No wasted motion. His clothes were a rumpled pile beside his

`You hurting?' he asked.
`I could do with another night at Chin's.'

`You betcha. Very discreet. He's got half that rack, full

>>

SPOILERS FOR DRAGONFALL, IF YOU'VE BEEN LIVING UNDER A ROCK FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS YOU'LL WANT TO SKIP TO THE NEXT POST!

She gets possessed either way. If you save the kids and don't kill the leader a formerly toxic spirit possesses her and gives her a healing spell. If you do kill the leader the toxic spirit possesses her and imbues her claws with the ability to do burning damage.
>>
>>381741661
I'm fairly sure like most sensible RPGs they're canon in their version of the universe and the universe at large gets rebooted every time they roll out a new version of the books.

Here's some more: Istanbul declared independence from Turkey and became Constantinople again.

>>381741661
Canon characters appearing in the games are rare, I think the biggest one was Lofy and Harlequin, and while 1 does put the player at ground zero for one of the biggrest events in shadowrun canon in the end it doesnt matter. Runners are dime a dozen scumbags who live fast and die young. Nobody will remember you or what you did or did not do. Its all conjecture, hearsay and legend.

So yeah, stop worrying about it.

Deckers are essential in Shadowrun. You'll be decking in nearly every mission. Just don't put any Karma into ESP Control, it's a dump stat, all you need is Decking and a gun skill. Rifles are good.

Like everyone else said, you can skip Returns easily. There are really minor references you can pick up if you play them in chronological order but they're not important at all. You're best off skipping Returns, playing Dragonfall because it's the best, and then if you want more of that with marginally better mechanics and marginally worse characters and noticeably worse pacing, play Hong Kong. Still pretty good.

I played as a Decker/Mage in Dragonfall because of the extra Decker checks only the PC could pass. Is it the same way in Hong Kong? Decker/Mage was really fun but I wouldn't mind trying a different class.
>>
>>381743013
Dragonfall is the best quality wise (but Hong Kong will always be my favorite). Its cyberpunk with magic. Shadowrun lore is pretty insane, they've mapped around 3 decades worth of lore in edition plus like a century of just background stuff setting up the world.

You'll probably be very confused because of that. Its natural. Just go with the flow.

>>381743318
No idea. I don't pay attention to the credits so I don't know if they shifted designers or writers or what. My gut feeling is because Dragonfall was more tightly paced because it was originally just a DLC for Returns, while Hong Kong they knew was going to be a stand alone thing which may have led to having gigantic fucking infodump NPCs all over the place. Plus the stories themselves are just structured differently. Dragonfall feels more pressing all the time, Hong Kong meanders more. Even when you're spinning your wheels and doing miscellaneous bullshit in Dragonfall it still feels more in service of the overall story.

It doesn't matter if you're remembered. The whole point of running in the shadows is that it's the closest thing to freedom in the Sixth World. You're not slaving away in a dead-end corp position as a wageslave, you're not on the street as a SINless bum, and you're not a government official getting reamed by a AAA corp with extraterritoriality and trillions of nuyen of GDP. You work for The Man, but on your terms. You take the megacorps' money and use it for your own purposes.
And if you live long enough to be one of those legendary runners like FastJack, Clockwork, Harlequin, etc., you might make be able to make things just a little better, whether it's improving your character's community, steering the course of an megacorp, or pushing society just a bit further back from the abyss.

I started with Returns to get familiar with the setting. It's pretty mediocre and short, but you will appreciate improvements of Dragonfall much more if you play Returns. I mean, how the fuck a team of inexperienced literally who devs was able to improve so much in less than a year?
>>
>>381743920
But do hand razors jingle jangle jingle (Jingle jangle)?
>>
>>381743471
It wasn't. Like I said here >>381743672, I only had slightly longer cooldowns on spells. I always had a spell or Mark Target to use on my turn, you just have to be smart with what spells you use. It's not a min/max wet dream or anything but it's perfectly playable.
>>
>>381743840
No one runs the shadows because they just want to be left alone. It always starts with something: a stray glance at a AAA corp's accounting data, flipping off the wrong Yakuza lieutenant, a loved one with a life-threatening illness, or sometimes they just want out of their shitty SINless second-class life. But like anything, eventually people's sights get set higher, and the next thing you know, you're on a run to Zurich Orbital about to get a big enough payout to not only fix your little sister's exceedingly rare and impossibly expensive to treat medical disorder, but the leftovers can probably fund cures for other kids.
The shadows are dangerous, but it's high risk/high reward in the Sixth World, omae. If you just want to gun people down and get paid for it, be a good boy and join a mercenary corps.

Nothing will ever beat to me the "bad" ending of Dragonfall. It's just so perfect and beautiful in every way. And that pacing! It's simply the best ending for a video game i ever saw.
And it even was foreshadowed earlier!
>>
>>381750398
Wasnt it only forshadowed by the black magic man? The guy youd never talk to once if you werent a magic user?
>>
>>381743013

Dragonfall's main story is generally considered better than Hong Kong, but Hong Kong has more fleshed out side NPCs, some of which have story arcs. Reliable Matthew is one of the best NPCs I've ever seen in an RPG.

Both DF and HK are worth playing. Getting them while they're both on the Steam sale is prudent if you're a fan of story-heavy RPGs.
>>

Dunno about HK, but in DF you can build a Physical Adept to be a tank who exists solely to flush people out of cover while taking literally zero damage from any sort of firepower. Damage isn't too shabby, either.

It's really rough in the early game, though, and you don't truly become bulletproof until near the end of the game.

>>
>>381752025
Class mostly just determines how you start and what you start with, and occasionally how other people see you.
When you get Karma you can spend it pretty much anywhere.
If you wanna be a gunslinging mage, go for it, but be careful of cybernetics since those aren't a mage's friend.
>>
>>381752025
Mage is fine, but you realistically only get enough level-up points to pour into two skillsets, and since you will be the face for your squad that means you'll be putting all your points into magic and charisma, with not enough left over for guns to make it worth it

>>381752025

Cyberpunks that take on odd jobs, usually for megacorps. Anything from 'steal this prototype' to 'wipe out this gang's hideout' to 'extract this high value employee from Company X for Company Y.' If you're really interested, the first few pages of fluff in the 5E core rulebook (which you can download here >>>/tg/53958222) do a good job of painting a picture of the Shadowrun world.

Isn't it? I'm pretty sure spellcasters get upgradable basic bolt spells that essentially functions as their normal ranged attack. They're your guns as spellcaster AND you don't need to reload.
