Zero Mission shares a lot of the original NES Metroid's layout as well.
Both games look at these layouts, and thinks about how they could be interpreted as a proper setting, and then embellish them nicely including some brand new sections not present in the original game.

What I mean is, Zero Mission was the example, and he followed it. Nintendo are aiming to go beyond that.

I'm not particularly excited for the game either but this is the hand we've been dealt: Nintendo miraculously heard the backlash of Federation Force and actually stepped up and did something about it. They're making a new Metroid game. Is it a rehash? Yes, but this is how they're gauging the future of the series, and you can bet your ass that if SR fails they'll gladly cancel Prime 4, which probably has little to no work invested in it yet.

AM2R feels very classic, the last fight with the queen felt like it could have just been a boss in Super 1:1. Obviously can't say for sure until I play it but Samus Returns feels off. Free aiming, easy mode powers including detective vision and invincible mode, counters and cinematic takedowns for bosses, big glowing floor panels for interactables, everything is slower. Of course I'll still get it, but I'm skeptical.

It's AM2R that feels off. There's a lot of good moment like the queen battle, but overall the game is very rough around the edges. It's a good fan game, but it's still a fan game and you never forget it.

Free aiming is a good thing to put in the series, but the counter moves are really for the people who want more action, which is good if they make the enemies more aggressive and difficult, and while the Aion abilities are there to make the game easier, hopefully they'll make it more difficult to balance that out.

Even if the quality of game suffers from the counter movies and the Aion abilities it already still looks to be a better game than AM2R.

Yes, it's just for bosses. Counters against normal enemies just knock them away and stun them. In both cases it's really just free hits and you still have to actually shoot them, so it's not like you lose complete control and watch Samus do cool shit.

Though I hope against the bosses there's a few different little cutscenes depending on when you do the counter. It'd probably get tedious seeing them too much.

Yes, the original Metroid has aged like shit because of the cheesey parallax scrolling: enemies will follow you into rooms you haven't even spawned into yet, and will make you backtrack to swap your weapons out. Zero Mission is just completely superior and easily the best handheld Metroid by a country mile.
