Holy shit this is unprecedented. This explains why they let go of a fair few of their staff. But while this is great for creative control, it pits a great deal nore pressure on their titles to sell well. In any case, hyped for Season 2.

Alright then there's no fucking excuse for the episodic model and always online bullshit in season 2.
>>
what do you guys expect from season 2

>transferring over old weapons

>more missions per map

>accents that reflect the location

>no always online

>go with the previous model of 3 maps per a release so that it can be more easily marketed
>>

desu I don't care, it's kind of hilarious and becoming a trope

>no always online
I could do with that.

>go with the previous model of 3 maps per a release so that it can be more easily marketed

i really hope for a good, but small weapon upgrade system.
>>
>>380742826
You mean transfer of S1 weps to S2? Thats a no brainer. S2 is just going to add the new maps to the current platform. Dont really care about the accents, if they have the cash to spare sure, but its not a priority. And I doubt itll continue to be always online.

Hopefully they fix some of the bad aspects of Hitman 2016. I wouldn't be surprised if they keep it episodic considering they've already started doing it so they probably feel that they may as well finish the story that was going in the same fashion, but there is no excuse if they keep the always online part of it.
>>
>>380743960
on one hand it encourages people to play the game the way it was meant to be played, and get the game out sooner. Helps justify it's larger levels

on the other hand on the other hand it's harder to market.
>>
>>380744201
>but there is no excuse if they keep the always online part of it.

>>
>>380744370
It's just a pain in the ass for me because I live in a shithole with bad internet and it makes everything take forever to load in. It doesn't add anything to the game by having it be always online either, so I'd really prefer they just remove it. I also hope they finally add the briefcase with the WA2000

>I just want a little weapon customization, like from blood money
blood moneys system was too big perhaps. turning your silver ballers into pic related monstrosities was kind of wrong imo.

i would like to have more cosmetic options, perhaps combined with a small weight system. Like choose a different wood type for your pistol which weights 50g more.

I really liked the weapon system from some stalker mods. but it wouldnt make much sense to give an elite assassin a half broken pistol. Another option would be the splinter cell path. But it doesnt really fit the tone of the game.
>>
>>380744704
Man, the Silverballers in Blood Money got over the top as fuck as the game went on.
>>
>>380745396
yep. the dumbest thing was the automatic upgrade, which made the pistols worse and not better.
>>
>>380740080
I haven't been following this thing even though I love the new Hitman. Why did Squanix want to sell them? Hitman was really well received after people understood that the episodic model wasn't that bad. Didn't it sell well?

It actually kinda works for nuHitman as it is more of a sandbox game. You have time to explore the whole level and do all the shit. When you are getting bored with it the next one comes out.

they chose not to
it's probably the most altruistic move I've ever seen made by a big publisher, and even then I have to assume it's because they feel the IP's value is too low to be worth it, as well as too volatile to survive being given to another developer.

>Hitman games are a relatively small seller
>it has extremely niche appeal (you have to love obsessively replaying a handful of levels over and over)
>the userbase is violently autistic
>attempts to introduce things to the franchise essentially guarantees literal years of toxic word of mouth
>it's fairly expensive to develop

so that means either
>we can keep the IP for name recognition and pray to fucking god that it doesn't self destruct when we get a dev who isn't IOI to make a new Hitman game, knowing full well that realistically the moment it's announced it's going to rain shit from the sky, cost us too much in development, and we'll have to fight tooth and nail to retain our already small audience while getting no real pickup from the mainstream anyways

at first I really wanted to like other levels more than Sapienza because it bothered me that all I ever saw was people putting it at the top of their list, but coming back to the game now after having played it as it released, I have to say

Sap's really fucking good.

Like, really really good.

in terms of play, for me:
Sapienza > Bangkok > Paris > Marrakesh/Colorado > Hokkaido

in terms of aesthetic:
Bangkok > Sapienza > Hokkaido/Paris > Marakesh > Colorado
>>
>>380747176
Kind of small and not very varied setting.
It's divided into like 3 areas that you need a different disquise to enter.
4 targets but not that many ways to take out each and gets tiring on replays
Only one exit in story mission

It would be an ok level if the game had 10-15 missions but as one out of 6 where al the others are way bigger it stands out as being kind of crap.
>>
>>380749162
Well I can't say I hate episodic systems in general, but would not play Hitman missions as they come out one by one. Playing the game you get in a certain mood and when levels come out one by one with a long period between them you barely get immersed in your mission before you finish it and can only run it over and over which gives you repetition fatigue.
>>
>>380750997
I guess we play Hitman in different ways, because I would never move on from a level until I got SASO on it.
>>
>>380750867
But the lab part really ruins it for me. You got one objective there, only two usable outfits with near equal functionality, barely any option in approach, and if you're doing it directly, it's kind of comical when you distract other scientists.
>>
what locations would you like to see in S2
>>
>>380751229
just shot the stalactite from near the plane and you're done.
>>
>>380751259
St. Petersburg, obviously in snow.
Venice.
Something akin to the English manor from Contracts.
>>
>>380750427
Because the game is still under development while levels roll out, which can result in patches that completely change how the game plays before it's even finished. For example, I wouldn't have complained about the RNG headturn-sightbox stuff if I hadn't played the game without it, i.e. if there had only been the full game, and that was the system they'd decided on before release.
>>
>>380740080
Hitman is now the biggest indie series ever, let that sink in.
>>
>>380751383
That's just not very Hitmany. Also bypassing tedious things through exploits feels like I'm robbing myself of gameplay, I'm not here for the result screen, I'm here for the level itself.
>>
>>380751560
what about half life?
>>
>>380751229
>the lab part really ruins it for me
understandable, because it feels like a level within a level so it kind of prevents being able to just relax a little, but I actually like the lab and how it connects to the castle/whatever.

I think it's just one thing too many.

If it was the city & secret lab, or the castle & secret lab, it'd be great, but all three kind of pushed it a bit too far.

Similarly, I think that Marrakesh could have been one of the absolute best levels in the game if they had a bigger network of interconnected roofs, as well as some sort of catacomb syste.
>>
>>380751648
It's not an exploit; it's a level feature. Do you also think that getting Manuel Delgado to follow you out of the cellar to tell you to leave, and then quickly shooting him in the head and throwing him off the cliff before the guard comes around the corner is an exploit?
>>
>>380751697
being that valve owns steam, the biggest publishing platform on PC, I think it's more accurate to categorize HL as "self-published" similar to Rockstar's GTA, or Blizzard's Overwatch

>>
>>380751648
That's why the stalactite doesn't highlight in Instinct view. It's meant as something for experienced players to use to skip that part of the mission.
>>
>>380751834
Yeah, Marakesh definitely underplayed its setting. If they made it more scuttly, like the middle east levels in SA, it would be a lot better. Also it has same problem that embassy and school feel like two little levels inside the level, too separate from the rest.
>>
>>380743960
They released it at the end as one whole package, and even released a disc version.

It's not a big deal as long as they do give you the choice.

I guess you do miss out on the elusive targets, but even as someone who bought it episodically, I completely ignored all that stuff for the most part.

Not well enough for Squeenix. Then again this is a publisher who was disappointed that Tom Raider "only" sold 3 million copies.

>accents that reflect the location
with them being independent thats even less likely, VA is expensive shit.

>no always online
agreed there

>go with the previous model of 3 maps per a release so that it can be more easily marketed
I think now it will be more confusing if they change one more time

This is a tough one, if they keep it episodic then the content comes faster (and it has been working great so far for anyone that actually played the game), but the truth is that a lot of people didnt bought the game because it was episodic, even after the full season came out, meaning that in the long run its hurting them.

Still, release it full and that means that its gonna be a long ass time untill they actually sell it and get revenue from it. And the same people may still bitch that its not the full game and its just season 2 or whatever.

>>380742945
The last few Elusives were good (most of the older ones were shit), but I still think that they should be replayed once a week or something. To be gone forever is very pointless I think. Its a game that has to give as much content as it can and limiting it like that doesnt seem smart.

A week would be a nice way of still keeping some of that tension of not being able to fuck it up, if not a week then a month, just dont lock it forever.
>>
I wish there was more imaginative options in the game. Like messing with the virus in Sapienza to remotely kill the other targets or silly easter egg shit like throwing the pasta sauce in and creating a zombie plague that effects the whole map.

I also wished there was an option in Bangkok to take that rockstar guy's murder recording and play it through the whole hotel's sound system.

And the key word is "skip". I don't play games to skip the gameplay and get to "you win" screen, I'm playing them for the fun of playing them, so that just leaves me with a bad section of the game. Also you're saying bad part of the level is fine because you can skip it.

Also, since we'll probably be taking down the SC's allies this season, I'm expecting more scummy and low key targets. Instead of celebrities and scientists, I expect to be killing hackers and mob bosses.
>>
Hopefully this will work out for them in the long run.
It's just speculation, but it seems like it was Squeenix rushing IO for quicker releases that meant that it didn't have multiple levels per episode as originally intended - so maybe now they'll be able to structure it like they want. Or they'll keep going with the same structure, who knows.
>>
>>380752954
That's like saying games like Dark Souls and Castlevania should never have shortcuts and you should run the entire length of the map to get place to place.

It's not that the virus section isn't bad, just that it can only play it so many ways. So they provide a hard to find way to quickly do it.
>>
>>380753108
I've been thinking a lot about a train based level but it would be too restrictive by width.
>>
>>380742945
Elusive targets were a waste of development time anyways. Only minimal changes to old levels like chancing a position of a guard or two and full retard with how you can restart them ad infinitum as long as you don't actually complete any objectives. They probably put more development time into the fucking intro videos.

Good because people aren't actually missing out on any actually worthwhile content, bad because the timed content was shit anyways. There's no reason ™ shouldn't be completely standalone offline, stop treating the game like a fucking online service.
>>
>>380752147
Get the HD collection.

Silent Assassin 2 is pretty good
Contracts is great
Blood Money is God tier

Graphics have aged badly, and the controls can feel stiff as fuck compared to modern games.

Just mentioning it if that's a big issue for you.
>>
>>380753329
Imagine if there's station stops though. Many maps have timed events, so you might have to plan to go off board and grab something from a specific station to do the job. Maybe even spawn in a station ahead to snipe or prep something.

It's been a longtime dream for me to have a theme park level as there would be no end to possibilities for accident kills and neat disguises. But considering their current engine can't even handle revolving doors or elevators, it doesn't seem likely.
>>
>>380751259
I was talking my brother about this, and he came up with a great one.

A level set in a prison. Specifically though, Agent 47 would start outside the prison and have to figure a way to get inside.

It'd be a great use of the fuck huge maps they are clearly capable of. Imagine a Sapienza sized level, where 75% of the map is the prison.

It'd be pretty damn sweet
>>
>>380751437
>Something akin to the English manor from Contracts.
I really want this. I love locations with moody ambience and lots of hidden passages and such.
>>
>>380754190
Theme park would require there being children on the map and I think you can see what sort of problem we're heading for there.
>>
>>380754438
Filtering out kids would be the least of their problems with that setting.
>>380754341
Yeah, I've also thought about something akin to that. Would be sick as hell to have a level like that where you could either take the target out as a guard or shank him as a prisoner.
>>
>>380754438
There was a level based on a children's birthday party in Blood Money, and not a child in sight.

Or the fact that GTA always seems to have a playground somewhere in it's map, but again, no kids.

It's not a big deal to leave the kids out.

I bought Hitman TM during the first 50% sale, just little after Episode 6. Before I went to another episode, I was replaying levels until at least mastery level 10. And honestly, I can see game working very well with it's seasonal episodic format. I'm really looking forward to season 2. Easily goty 2016 to me.
>>
Regarding the settings for future levels, I really do hope they'll be a bit more imaginative. The levels in 2016 were good, but they were all some sort of variation of
>Hotel setting
>Secret compound infiltration
>Average city setting

There's so many great possibilities, but I think they might be afraid to go outside their comfort zone.

I want a level on a cruise liner, but an actually large one with many decks. The series touched upon that sort of things with steamboat in BM and tutorial level of 2016, but I just think more in style of a level from THPS3: large deck, sunny weather, people sunbathing, playing games, and swimming in the pool.
>>
>>380755283
A hotel and a farm were also done in Absolution.

What's your point?
>>
>>380755283
Everything in Absolution was shit, it was a shit game, that doesn't negate the potential of a setting.
>>
>>380755026
honestly, i love the hotel settings. and i really hope it will make some sort of return, even it is a big cliche.
>>
>>380754983
Well, yes and no.
I don't think I'll ever be in favor of episodic releases, but Hitman is a franchise that's pretty well suited for it since you can really go indepth with the levels over and over. Problem is that it's still a massive turn off for most people, and for good reason, in an already extremely niche genre. So unless they somehow change their current format, I don't think they'll have better luck in the future.
>>
>>380755291
I've always said that my wet dream for a great contracts mode would be a level editor.

>>

In tm? No way.

It was a generic as fuck illumanti plot or something. I can't even fully remember. I do remember it was left on a God damn cliff hanger, which is retarded.

Not that it's a huge deal either way. Hitman has never been great when it comes to the plot, it's all an excuse to get these great levels that give you the chance to kill targets in a variety of ways.
>>
>>380756976
Hitman is more about social stealth than hiding behind walls
>>
>>380756976
>MGS
>stealth
Either way Hitman is social stealth, unless you set out for a suit challenge, it's nothing like proper stealth games like Thief and Splinter Cell.
>>
>>380756976
Hitman is a totally different beast. There are basic stealth mechanics, which can be compared to the rudimentary mechanics of MGSV, like the way being detected works and basic distractions. But Hitman is way more about social stealth, by using disguises and doing stealthy shit in plain sight while everyone is looking the other way.
>>
>>380756976
it really doesnt compare. you can call both stealth games, but you can also say that call of duty and hitman are both action games because you shot people.

not saying one is better than the other.
>>
>>380756990
yeah i played the first game sometime ago that final mission where you had to escort the daughter was painful
>>
>>380756976
The stealth is deep, but not in the same way as V.

Hitman is less about sneaking and more about figuring out how to exploit various systems to kill your targets covertly.

Think of it as a stealth-puzzle game.
>>
>>380756976
It's not a sneaking game for the most part if that's what you're asking.

It's more about blending in with any given environment. So a lot of levels will be big open public places, say a town square, or a fashion show.

The main object of the game is to find a way to get to the restricted areas where the targets usually hang out. To help you along the way you also have the ability to change into any (male) persons outfit that you knock out or kill.

So if your dressed as a fashion model for example, suddenly you can go a lot more places in that fashion show level.

There's almost a certain puzzle like element to it.
>>
>>380757080
TM's plot is about how 47's actions are allowing an specific group to get too powerful.
>>
>>380757638
Yeah, I guess, I just didn't care.
>>
>>380757565
>Think of it as a stealth-puzzle game.

Best way to describe it. A lot of people get hung up on gun physics and AI exploits but the game was never meant to be realistic. It's a rigid set of rules on a 'board' the player learns their way around.
>>
>>380758180
The goofy AI and general silliness of it actually adds to the charm for me. It gives it a comedic edge which the game totally acknowledges and plays up to.

Like you could literally kill 100 people, but 5 minutes later the alert phase is over, and everyone has forgot it was you, because suddenly you're dressed as a chef. That's fucking brilliant.
>>
>>380751259
hmm
A party/trance festival in spain or Portugal.
A enter this prison to kill someone and escape level.
Maybe a lodge/ski resort in sweden/switzerland.
A casino level, maybe in hongkong.
>>
>>380743960
The episodic model actually works for Hitman
>>
>>380758660
Or the fact that after the alert phase, no matter how terrible the death, somebody just bags up the bodies and drags them away as everybody resumes their daily routines like it's perfectly normal.
>>
>>380743960
Maybe you should learn to judge things by yourself instead of blindly spouting /v/ memes.
>>

Hitman 1, 2, Contracts, and maybe some missions of Blood Money, were all truly AMAZING. They were all perfectly made... they were considered the Mona Lisa of infiltration games... they were detailed like some of the most famous Greek sculptures from antiquity...

They were GOOD, and you could play them over and over again... and still be surprised by some new discoveries (and ways to complete the game)!

Now, what about the latest two games?

They suck.

Yes. The franchise went downhill when the devs decided to dumb the game down for stupid console retards. They made the game easy and EXTREMELY accessible to stupid casual players.

It became a linear shitfest, where the game tells you where to go, what to do, and when to do it. It's perfect for people that love being spoon-fed, but it got so far from what Hitman used to be.

R.I.P to the Hitman franchise.

You'll keep a big place in my memories.
>>
>>380772725
No, it applies to every mission.
>>
>>380772275
Pretty much this.

There's more lore in 2016 than there ever was in the entire Hitman series put together. In terms of organisations alone, there's:
>The Delgado Cartel
>CICADA
>Crystal Dawn
>Providence
>Ether
>Kronstadt Industries
>Sanguine

Don't get me started on all the little backstory details like how almost every person linked to the targets in the story was at the Yacht party or how KAI is enslaving a prototype machine whom you can rescue.

>>
>>380773325
For example, in Paris, they have a lot of information on the Shadow Client. How he succeeded in convincing Novikov to work for him, what he did and how. Bits of lore are spread out all across the game. Not to mention they were already talking about Thomas Cross in that level and you can see him talking in the tutorial level.
>>
>>380773224
Yes, but the difference is that the opinion of someone that played ALL of the Hitman games, will have more value for me, than the opinion of a dumb console kid (like you), who only played the last one.
>>
>>380773928
I've played every game in the series and I can tell you your opinion is misinformed.

2016 is the furthest thing from being linear.

Kane and Lynch was a series that had so much potential but had no clue what it was doing. The first game completely fell apart around the halfway mark, and the second game had nothing going for it outside of the 'they had to work hard to make it look that shitty' style.

I tend to forget Freedom Fighters exists. Has it aged well?
>>
>>380752954
It rewards map knowledge, you can't just peek in from the balacony and shoot the stalactite. In order to do the "skip" you need to:

-Get a silenced weapon past two pat-down points
-Stand in a specific spot deep in the cave to get line of sight on the stalactite
-Be able to avoid detection after guards go on high alert after the alarm goes off

It's the only way to do a no kill, no knockout, sosa as well.
>>
>>380753584
The controls themselves are good, the animations are from another age.
>>
>>380776719
>I tend to forget Freedom Fighters exists. Has it aged well?

I replayed it last year, and yes, it's still great. The big problem with Freedom Fighters is that when you know the correct order to do the missions, the challenge and replay value kind of goes away.

Sure, you could ignore the helipad and APC, but then you'd miss out on charisma and you'd just end up with endless enemies and a chopper that can pretty much instakill you.
>>
>>380776876
There are more ways into the cave than just the pat down points and the last one can be solved by getting gud.

Honestly I loved Hitman 1. The last level in Romania was meh but otherwise it's good.
The Hong Kong missions are "simple" in their layout but are still among my favorites of all the games. The Budapest Hotel is pure ludo.
>>
>>380778201
yeah but those jungle levels, especially the ones with the actual assassination, are painful. they're essentially what keeps me from wanting to replay the game.

Yeah, those were a pain. At least you could skip the silly boss battle by sniping Tony Montana from the beginning of the level, before he had time to get high.

Season 2 should remake some of the missions from Blood Money. A New Life with every house being fleshed out for Contracts would be cool.

on the one hand I did really like contracts

on the other I think 2016 has hit the absolute perfect tonal balance, with a moment-to-moment lightness/frivolity when it comes to mechanics and non-mission npc's, an over-arching kind of dry grandiosity for the background narrative (feeling like large out-of-control forces are fighting on a scale we can barely comprehend), and a weird slightly disturbing darkness when it comes to the individual targets themselves.

I've just really come to think they got everything right while playing and replaying this, I really dislike the trend of big game franchises to drop their sense of humour as the series goes on and IOI are one of the few left who are keeping the flame alive these days. There's no chance of Splinter Cell ever getting back that dash of magic that makes CT so easy to dive back into, like revisiting an old friend. This one's got it.

Max Payne 3 went for something similar and Rockstar, who are seriously good at making stylish games, still didn't even come close to getting it as right as IOI did.

weird, you know, they could do it with a small cutscene.

basicly the elevator doesnt move unless the doors are closed and to make it move someone has to push the button. Have it go to a short 2 second cutscene (in engine of course, just make the camera locked in a specific angle), and when you regain control of 47 you were teleported to an identical elevator on whatever floor you would go (you could only travel between 2 specific floors, so not like the old Hitmans but like Blood Money).

This is what Duke Nukem did and he did it even without cutscenes.

I get they cant make you move along an elevator but a closed one with sound effects and a little bit of camera shake would be enough to make it feel like you were moving along.

>>
>>380789140
You don't know what kind of deal they made. IO suffered layoffs and paid SE an unknown sum of money for their independence. Could be that SE never had the rights to Hitman in the first place and that was IO's leverage.
>>
>>380789421
Leverage for what? They were dropping the game and studio. What would IO have to bargain with?
>>
>>380789421
So youre basing this off of absolutely nothing? No shit IO would take layoffs did you not see how badly this game did.

You people act like this was some super successful game and square just axed it for no reason, it bombed really badly and in the report where they said they were dropping io listed a fuck ton of money lost on the project. Square had literally 0 obligation searching for investors and 95% of the time this happens the studio is just shut down outright. This is a rare example of a publisher actually actively preventing a shutdown.

the only way of them to make future games is to rely on crowdfunding or sign exclusive deals with companies like sony and microsoft.
though I doubt they want hitman to be exclusive to any system so chances are its gonna be a crowdfunded game from now on.
>>
>>380740654
This is not unprecedented. This is also not great. IO will have had to pay a chunk to have the license signed over to them. IO also is now without a publisher to bankroll them, and presumably have no cash left considering they just purchased the license + have been giving their staff the boot for a while.
IF they find a publisher (which they really should, but "should" does not always equal "will") they will likely not be as well bankrolled as they previously were, and S2 will likely then be a dive in quality. The best hope is that much of S2 was already completed and they can do without so many staff members/time/money for the remainder.
If S2 is a decent hit (not marred by bad reviews/sells decently) then they may get a larger budget for S3. If S2 (a) isn't great or (b) doesn't sell well, they will probably be canned and dissolved afterwards.
Hope they get the leeway to release S2 in a better way than they were forced to with S1, that was seemingly a big reason why uptake on S1 wasn't as good as the game deserved.
