Fact: Before Federation Force was announced Takahashi at Nintendo said it was important to satisfy both 2D and 3D metroid. Federation Force was the 3D game, so a 2D game must be right around the corner.

Nintendo probably didn't know Federation Force was going to be shitty and unpopular while they were developing it, so if they were making a 2D game at around the same time it would have been too far along in development to cancel it.

God I hope so. The studio known for making Metroid has been working on a secret unannounced game for a few years now, and Nintendo confirmed 2 Metroid games were in the works. So I would love to see that game become real.
