I think BD64 is the superior and definitive version of Doom 64, but they're both worth playing.

Oh okay, also how different is BD64 from regular Doom64? I don't want to burn myself out on them as I already burned myself out on Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 plus the Master Levels by marathoning them all in a row.

I'm alternating between Quake 1 and Thief fan missions right now, but looking up BD64 on Youtube it looks really interesting. Is it okay to play just that? The regular Doom64 looks to similar to 1 and 2 which I am still burned out on to feel like playing right now. Otherwise I will just chuck them on the backlog and wait till I feel like playing Doom again.

Why do so many people dislike Hexen? I thought it was considered a classic game until I started actually visiting these old school FPS threads only to see people shitting on it or putting it in last all the time. Is it worth playing?

Also I played Shadow Warrior and liked it but from what I gathered everyone says it's the worst of the big 3 build engine games. I liked it but it was inconsistent quality. When it was good it was god tier, but when it was bad it was really formulaic and uninspired.

Because Doom 2 has too many mediocre or bad maps compared to the few good ones. Probably the maps that qualify as good or great would be:
>Tricks and Traps
>'O' of Destruction/Circle of Death
>Industrial Zone
>The Abandoned Mines
>The Spirit World
>The Living End
While some of the bad or awful ones are:
>The Factory
>Downtown (one of THE worst official maps)
>The Courtyard
>Nirvana
>Barrels O' Fun
>The Chasm (another one of THE worst official maps)
And then the rest of the maps are generally just rather mediocre in quality or not fun to play, or just come out average. Compared to Doom 1, Doom 2 just falls short in level design, likely because Sandy just burned out too much and Romero wasn't making enough levels himself. You have a couple of good levels sprinkled in the early and mid game, but the mid game is littered with bad and mediocre levels, and then the end game is fronted by bad or mediocre levels before getting to some of the better levels at the very end of the game. It's not to say that Doom 2 is a bad game, it just falls short in comparison to the others because good level design is really important to a game like Doom.

I play Doom 1 or 2 almost everyday (great for watching a show and playing at the same time).
Brutal Doom is fun, and can have interesting results when combined with WADs that weren't designed with it in mind.
The new weapons and demons it adds change the feel of the game drastically to something more challenging and frantic.

It's not "the best doom", but it's a very well crafted alternative playstyle that definitely livens things up for someone who has been playing Doom since it was released.

GZDoom with Smooth Doom (all D64 assets), Perkristian's HQ SFX, and BDCME or Arachno's HQ soundtrack remasters. It's basically just classic Doom but enhanced, and that's really all I need. Even just playing through TNT's maps with this set up, when I get in the zone and start kicking ass like a madman, the sound effects and the animations and the music just make it feel so amazing and satisfying. Like a mental orgasm just because of how fucking awesome it felt to play the game this way.

I tried it and within a few minutes I bursted out laughing at how cheesy and childish it is. Taunt straight out of a B action movie dubbed by some dude trying to act tough while recording in his bedroom. Takedowns with crude, ridiculous animations. Ludicrous amounts of blood washing out any emotional trigger it might have, and the cartoonish way in which all that gore happens shattering any immersion into pieces. Overly loud gun noises. Cracks blocking your vision. Recoil. Powered up monsters turning every encounter into peekaboo or trench warfare, utterly destroying the original fast-paced, movement-based Doom gameplay.

To sum it up that way doesn't do it justice, the result manages to be even worse than the sum of these parts. Perhaps, particulary because it takes such a great game as a base and bring it down to the abysmal craphole many first-person shooters have been in for the last decade or so. This mod seemingly manages to take every terrible modern feature and shove it into an old game, creating the worst possible scenario: a game with poor gameplay *and* outdated eyecandy. It could be an ironic depiction, a statement about the stereotypical FPS gamer, but now comes the frightening part: there is no irony here.

Reception to this mod has been overwhelmingly positive, and this was a bit of an eye opener to me. I tend to be an optimist at heart and intuitively believe people are (or can be) sensible, no matter how many times I'm proven wrong. When it came to Doom it used to be I'd sit in my little fluffy cloud, and any disturbance caused by people praising garbage would be merely temporary. Brutal Doom's consistent success is a permanent reminder this thing, this is what people want out of video games, even people playing Doom.

i don't dislike playing og doom with smooth doom for aesthetics, but i really don't care for some of it's weapons if i could be perfectly honest. the fists and pistol are useless without berzerk and feel awful to use effectively, the chaingun feels really unsatisfying to shoot with and doesn't feel that strong, and the rocket launcher's splash damage seems to work sometimes but other times ill shoot at a wall behind an imp and have them live somehow.

Sub weapons use their own ammo too, but you get a restock after you run out, so you can still spam them, it's just there'll be a short timer between volleys.

the sword throw has been overhauled quite a bit too, now you push and hold altfire to prep a throw and then release to throw it. The scroll is there mainly to tell players how to use it and of course to give more value to doom weapon spawns.

Plus giving the Blazter's primary and subweapon shots an ammo limit means I can make them stronger again, you have to admit it was a little on the brainless spammy side with how easy it was to get red mana and then shit cluster missiles all over the place.

It's kinda fun and when you first play it you might assume that you'll always use it because it doesn't feel like it alters the game all that much other than adding gore, but then inevitably at some point you play vanilla Doom again and realize it's better and that Brutal Doom is really just novelty torture porn slapped together by a perpetually salty narcissist from stolen segments of other people's code.

There is a "Classic" Setting in Brutal Doom where you don't have reloading or iron sights. They also remove the rifle and give you a pistol IIRC.
