There are two unrelated parts to the "curse".

The first is hollowing, which is basically creatures, not necessarily human, as evidenced by Gwyn, discarding "the illusion of life" and reverting to their original form, when their souls are weakened by some massive trauma. The second is inability to die properly that allows hollowing to happen. There is no definite answer about reasons for that in the lore, but weakening of the First Flame leading to gradual disappearance of disparity between life and death is the most obvious possibility.

Basically: Everyone's dying and turning into mindless zombies. You aren't mindless yet though. You get saved because there's a prophecy about an undead resetting the thing that keeps people alive and happy, the Fire.

Turns out to reset the fire, you need the souls of those guys who set it the first time, or at least the ones you can get, and this vessel thing to hold them.

But there's also these other guys who don't want to reset the fire because they're evil dicks who want to coral human zombies into easy to manage kingdoms. They offer you the chance to own one of those kingdoms and never really become a mindless zombie.

In the end it doesn't matter, because time is convoluted to the point where even if YOU don't reset the fire, another player will, and it always works out that the fire gets reset.

2 takes place in a kingdom with similar stuff happening, but the King there knew about the fire and wanted to avoid reseting it in favor of a permanent solution. He finds a way to do it, sort of, but his wife is a demon who wants everything to be dark so she keeps him from succeeding. You either pick up from where he left off, or you reset the fire yourself.

Honest question:
If when the player dies, time doesn't go backwards, how come some enemies come back and some don't? That means that there are just some enemies that are undead?

If I kill undead NPCS, they won't come back either, how does that work exactly?

Also, if I pull a lever and die, the lever is still pulled, but if I break some random barrel, the barrel is restored after death

DS1 had Gwyn revealed to still be "alive" and kicking but a shell of his former self. = This is what happens to anyone when they link the fire i.e. they become lords of cinder.

Over time endless others prolonged the age of fire or chose to leave it in darkness as the land rehashed itself each time.

In DS3 the problem arises that there have been many to link the fire but in spite of that it just isn't working anymore as a means to stave off the dark. So, all things not working, ash comes to life and starts collecting the scattered lords of cinder to collecting enough ash to maybe spark a bit of more fire from what's left.

Firekeeper basically confirms that no matter what you do, fire will always return and darkness will eventually cover the land.

hexes still get good buffs and dark orb for damage even though GRS still is okay. pyromancy has tons of good options for both damage and utility.faith has good buffs and while lightning spear damage was wrecked, it was never meant to be an offensive school and sorceries are insane at destroying bosses

I hate that every Dark Souls sequel tried to copy its story and lore. At least Demon's Souls and Bloodborne did their own thing, which is why I prefer them over 2 and 3.
