It's similar only in that there are big monsters with parts you can break to get mats to use to upgrade your weapons and armor. And admittedly, big monsters are scares until the post game. It definitely takes inspiration from MonHun, but don't go into it expecting MonHun.

I would say it mixes elements of MonHun, Souls, and open world RPGs to create something pretty unique. You can see the influences of those games in it, but it's incorrect to say it is actually like those games.

this game has me triggered like no other. Who the playtested hard mode? Everything ohk's you which makes it so you don't even know where the to go to progress. I've played this game for like 7 hours and have accomplished jack because I'm used to an open world game where you can kind of explore and do side quests instead of sticking directly to the main quests. I figure after killing the hydra and going back to the capital, the sidequest with lizard people would be doable, but after an hour of getting ohk'd and the dumb pawns making it so I have to fight like 3 at a time after killing the first two, I'm just at a loss for words. Again, who playtested this on hard?

So I leave that area and go find some bandits which are cake besides the most ridiculous guy ever who has a shield and longsword and can teleport/charge ohk from 25 feet away and kill all 4 of your party with ease. The guy never stops attacking and when he does, he instantly starts up again. I've also been killed by him when he's attacking my other party members. Dank hit boxes, capcom....
Did they just test the magic builds where you have to kite everything without taking a single blow? Again, I'm ing baffled at how poorly done it is. I know I should just play normal mode after this, but I'm a stubborn and competitive person so maybe blatantly broken and unfair mechanics aren't for me nor is this game. Dark Souls is hard, but can be overcome with skill. This game is just moronic at times and requires you to game the system to make any progress. sorry for the rant, but wtf? in 4 thought provoking replies such as "mad cuz bad," "git gud," and "just play normal, scrub."
edit: to the idiots fighting with me about hard mode, experienced players have said it is meant as ng+ once you have completed normal so all of you saying it's balanced for a new playthrough are smoking crack and need to stop.

But seriously, I know your pain. I always do NG on HM, so I'm used to that feeling of EVERYTHING one-hitting. My only advice is bearing with it and learning your limits, as well as perseverance.

Always go for the ranged/weak bandits to start and don't worry about your pawns, they can take care of themselves and you just need to rez them occasionally. For that first Well mission, don't even bother till you're 10-ish, if you're a fighter/strider, or 20ish if you're a mage. Do not try killing any of them, just run behind them and cut off their tail, should take 3-5 hits if you've a decent weapon. Once their tail is off, they don't attack anymore, drop their spear and run around like idiots. Do this for every saurian in the game you meet, then clean them up after all the tails are gone.

If you're also new-er to the game, I'd strongly suggest Magick Archer, Strider, or Ranger for your vocation. Climbing up monsters works and is fun, but be aware that if they so much as clip you, you're dead. Ranger and Magick Archer especially put out absurd damage, while keeping you way the fuck away from the fighting.

Otherwise, git gud or just play normal, scrub.

I played mage and sorcerer in my previous two plays and loved the hell out of it. Started as a strider this time with a strider pawn to try and teach it how to play, and it sucks. Getting my lunch handed to me constantly with two striders, a fighter, and a mage. So I'm going back to mage, keeping my pawn a strider, and then two fighters. I might actually make my pawn a fighter because I think he got hired more last time like that, no one has hired him now.

Actually incorrect. I'd suggest you keep a window up with the "Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen Sidequest Progression" table. Going to Grand Soren with the snake head DOESN'T cancel all the Stage 1 quests like flower-gathering, finding the prayer book, etc.

HOWEVER, completing the Everfall/that shit beneath the pawn guild, DOES. MOST people rush straight into that after arriving at Gran Soren, which leads to the confusion. You are perfectly able to go to Gran Soren, get a better vocation, upgrade your armor, etc, then go back to Cassardis. PROVIDED you don't complete the Everfall while you're there.

Fairly important for end-game, but you find plenty of them by that point on your own. They're used to 'cleanse' the raid-tier gear you find on Bitterback Isle, and to purchase cosmetics from the vendor in The Encampment. However they drop from enemies/bosses in BBI with pretty good frequency, you only need 8000 to cleanse an item if I remember, and doing the Seeker/Treasure-hunt quests (of which there are 100) will get you 1600 per quest.

So 'not incredibly important' if you're asking whether or not to make a loli pawn.

So I am really fucking loving warrior after being Ranger and Strider for a while.

Is anyone using ENB just for the superior AA? The one put out on /vg/ is pretty good for keeping the same look of the game. I noticed that there's an unchangeable option for available VRAM in the menus. Was there an ini that had the option to change it, or does it do nothing in this game?

Look, I get you guys are having fun with that but having such short pawns actually is a disadvantage sometimes. Trying to fight any dragonkin with short pawns getting thrown a mile away by the enemy slightly fluttering its wings is ridiculous.

Still, this port is fantastic. Just got into Gran Soren and I'm doing some sidequests before meeting the duke. My PC is a toaster so I can't do 60fps completely, but just having a consistent 30 when multiple pawns are using spells is amazing. What class is everyone doing currently? I'm going Assassin for the end game so I'm working on some augments from the Fighter/Ranger/Warrior vocations.

Escort quests are ass. Most of the time I just go to the site of where most of them tell you to go and then place one of the portcrystals down. For example, I have a portcrystal set at Bloodwater Beach so now whenever a quest pops up for that I just teleport and I'm done.

Otherwise traveling that far with an escort is infuriating.

And I'd keep your pawns as a Warrior or whatever class you want for a bit just to get important augments. Then switch them back. It's what I did for my healer pawn. Go to black cat, then you have to find a messenger that runs around town (make the quest your active one to see him marked on the map) he usually stops at caxtons around noon. My adventure was very much similar to yours except I encounter a dragon along the way and I ended up hunkered down in a magic fountain trying to wait out the night as goblins and ghosts attacked me the whole time. Pro tip for new players, go northwest of Gran Soren to the healing fountain and bring some empty flasks. You can fill them as much as you want and they heal a decent amount for your whole party. It's pretty nice if you blow through greenwarish often and you're still early in the game.

Also, keep some skeleton keys on you. You can buy one every once in awhile from the forger in Gran Soren and find one in a chest above the staircase to the duke's castle. Very few doors will need one, but having some on hand is always a good idea.

One big weird thing in PC version that almost made me quit before I began was that I changed my mind on my characters name. Went to backspace it and blam! Back button is backspace, so to delete name had to hit backspace, then go back into edit basic deets, then change name. Then press button to select that box for some reason, then backspace to delete one letter, then repeat. For a 10 letter name.

Yes, but keep in mind stats are effected by what vocation you are at the time of leveling up. So if you spend 90% of the game in physical damage dealing vocations your magick stat may be shitty. Not to the point of being useless, but not the strongest it could be.

Best thing to do is pick either magick or strength as your focus. That way your doing vocations that support that no matter what since there aren't really many augments that support one style in another vocation that supports the other. Example being there aren't many useful augments in the mage vocation for someone who is doing strength stuff, so not much reason to max that vocation out.

A lot of skills can't be used by more than one vocation and most can only be used with a certain type of item equipped, which is limited by your vocation (Mystic Knights are the only vocation that can use Magick Shields and therefore are the only one that can use Magick Shield skills). There are however augments, which are unlocked by attaining rank with a particular vocation. Once they're bought they can equipped even when you switch vocations, but you can only have 6.

Hard is a crapfest not because it's too hard, but because it's too hard in the beginning, but once you finally break through and get some levels, the game is even EASIER than normal because you get more XP faster.

It really isn't worth it. The game isn't ever gonna be hard in a meaningful way, at least not until BBI and even then it's just some of the encounters. It's more about the journey, playing around with different classes, having a fun adventure.

Just play on normal, Arisen. You can't go wrong.

I hope a "legendary encounter" mod comes out that allows extra strong versions of monsters to randomly spawn when you enter an area (they should be twice as large too).
