Let's have a good old fashioned DeS appreciation thread. I recently came into possession of this, which prompted me to blow the dust off the PS3 and start playing. I missed my chance originally because of how scarce it seemed to be once the souls series blew up. After playing every other entry in the series, I have to say that as in playing this, the sense of exploration and atmosphere is better than the other games subsequent. I would say that it's almost more atmospheric than BB, by a small margin. The darkness effects in this game are what I feel DaS2 originally wanted but could not recreate. The sense of dread is so refreshing. I'm quickly starting to love this game, like the first time I actually got gud at DaS.
I feel like a mechanic like world tendancy could have greatly improved bloodborne to make it more replayable. I don't know if I just got used to souls combat or what, but bloodborne was by far the easiest in the series. I remember when it came out people were having so much trouble with cleric beast, and I beat it first try. Something about it just felt inherently easier.
I have this sitting around on my shelf? Is it even worth playing though? everytime I start it I get turned off by the lack of a soundtrack when exploring. Sell me on playing this game and how should I play it to have the most fun?
I just finished Dark Souls for the first time today. Demon's Souls has a much better ending and overall is a better story.
I also somewhat prefer the goal oriented nature of the original having distinct levels than the spaghetti of Dark Souls. Just makes the game feel more purposeful, if a lot more gamey.
Dark Souls might as well have a "Congratulations" screen before the credits for the ending I got, which is the canon ending.
So we're trying to get a little /v/ DeS group over the PSN, I feel kinda bad because I haven't been playing my PS3 a lot recently because of work and stuff
If I myself can't play, I'll at least help coordinate it, and maybe join you on the weekends
But if you're interested, send me a PM
I agree with you OP, DeS has a something that I couldn't find anywhere else, even in BB. The despair and the impression of progression through a devastated world, from different perspectives was so good.
The characters were awesome too, I hope DaS 3 will feel more like it. Miyazaki can always try
I went from 0 to 600k souls grinding that on Black Katana skellington in 4-2, only killing him and occasionally the reaper by the altar. This was with a full luck build with Large Sword of Searching
I paid it forward by duping it and giving it to people on the old Demon's souls wiki forums
fuck dude, if I had my ps3 now i'd force you to give me it
There were so many issues that did get ioroned out with Dark Souls, and I first played DaS1 and then DaS2 before finally playing DeS, but I just really like the world design of Demon's Souls. I feel the areas have more personality by being distinct from each other and also how the armour seems more of a choice without poise and mid-rolling. Either you make your character able to take hits or able to dodge them.
I like playing it a lot. I can't play it too frequently or I start catching onto it's bullshit. I do look forward to those annual playthroughs, though.
LSoM is the best weapon.
Knight's Sword and katanas in general are for losers.
This game would be way better if it had more armor.
I still don't forgive them for making Dull Gold and Binding female only.
The best level is
5-2and the worst level is 2-2.
The best boss is
probably Astraea maybe FK Allantand the worst boss is Maneaters.
Probably learnt how to be aggressive and tactical, my first run through of DaS2 I had pretty easy time with more bosses than I expected, and every such time I wasn't hiding behind my shield shitting my pants like I was for too much of DS1 and DeS. Though I haven't played BB sadly.
>4-2 on a pure melee build
Sole reason I stopped playing
Other than Leech's sudden animation bursts, none of those guys can instakill you with wonky hitbox charges that send you off the platform.
I mean I guess Adju can but who falls down that shit c'mon man c'mon
>hear for years that Flame Lurker is the hardest of cores
>get to him
>block, hit him once, repeat
are you people for real?
same. And it looks like you missed the thief ring too.
Highest death rate there. I pushed on though.
Does DeS have the most brutal NG+ in the series?
I remember my first time with him. Using bastard sword and purpleflame shield. Even with this shield he gave me a hard time, his constant attacks when going berserk made me cower behind it the whole time, like I coud attack maybe every two minutes.
But he's a complete joke with magic.
PS4 REMASTER WHEN!??
Flamelurker can be tough because his AI is just really fucking aggressive a lot of the time, but he's an absolute chump if you take advantage of either his negative resistance to magic or his incredibly horrible pathing
When I played last fall there were actually some people still playing. Had soem fun co-op and even got summoned for Old Monk fight.
I rekt him, he send me hate mail, felt kinda bad for it
Yeah you're well out of SL range for my characters, barring one. But I don't think I had the sense to down-trade stuff to him at the time. SL 120 was the median level for most PVP and shit. Don't think I can do anything for you.
but he was a complete fucking joke, and I was playing melee and blocking his hits, not abusing any poor pathing or anything
my logic is this:
>Dark Souls 1 was made with 30fps animations
>if you unlock it you get issues (completely ignorable of course, we know it by this point), so it looks 'broken' or 'buggy' if you present this to consumers, which is why it was 30locked on PC
>DaS2 was released with 30fps on consoles, no 30 lock on PC
>later on we get PS4/Xbone remasters and PC gets SOFTS too
>now DaS3 is announced with a 30 fps lock even on PC
these are the facts, now my speculation:
>DaS2 was made with the remaster/SOFTS in mind, so no 30 fps animations, no 30 fps lock on PC
>DaS3 is being made with 30fps animations like DaS1 was because PS4/Xbone would never fucking ever be able to handle 60 fps
>console parity dictates they can't have the PC version running at 60 or it'll make consoles look bad, SPECIALLY after they released SOFTS on PS4/Xbone at 60 fps
now I'll be really stretching here:
>they make these games 30fps animation-based because it's easier for the japs
>DeS and Bloodborne are 30fps animation-based
>we'll never ever get these games running at 60 fps
>at best remasters will remove that fucking shitty blur and increase the resolution
m-maybe emulation will fix it!
I played Dark Souls for like 80 hours when it first came out without having played this one, and gave up on it about 75% of the way in because it was too boring. This shit on the other hand, is pretty much perfect. I started playing it 2 months ago after giving up on it after Phalanx when I bought it in 2013.People might think it's stupid but I really like the hub world, I like that there are levels instead of an open world.
Other than that, this game is either easy as fuck, or I picked up more skills than I realized playing Dark Souls.
It gets harder in ng+ , first run everything is fun and frolic. Maneater gets pretty mean in ng+ to the point to believe it's was impossible for me. But with patience and good timing it's possible.
When I first heard about the hub system I was very opposed to playing it because I was spoiled by DaS's interconnected world. After playing DaS2 and bloodborne (especially bloodborne) the hub system didn't piss me off anymore. Imo the hub system from BB is pretty much the same as it is in DeS, which is comfy. I love this game. I'm glad that I didn't play it already because at this point I've beaten BB and I was bored of it, wanting another souls game. April is so far away. I'm thankful for DeS
>by the end of it I'm fed up with the game and I don't want to play NG+
>get back to it after a long while
>I want to make a new character
>by the end of it I'm fed up again
>Fuck that was like 2 years ago, any tips.
block his hits
hit him once
careful not to go 0 stamina
have the adjudicator shield, if he hits you wait till you regen health before going aggressive
Seriously, he is weak to ranged attacks and especially magic. If not, get as much fire resistance as possbile and wear the thief ring. You can hide behind the pillars and he will forget about you. Those pillars are also really great for abusing his bad path finding.
>DeS wasnt designed to be the hardest game ever
>it was difficult but fair
>Became well known for it
>Scamco commisions DaS with the intention of marketing it as the hardest game ever "PREPARE TO DIE XDDD"
>People who only ever played DaS shit on DeS cause its not as hard as they would like
The easiest way as was stated by some people, magic, it's the easier. You roll and shot that wand like faggot.
If that's too easy, equip the purple shield from 1-1 and your weapon of choice. That doesn't make you invincible but limits the fire damage but the hits drains a lot of stamina, it's easier to roll and two hand.
Demon's has many ways to make the game easier for you. I was a Scrub and played through most of it with the regen ring AND a blessed weapon, for quite a bit of heal over time, so that as long as you're pretty careful with how many hits you take at once, you can survive alot of shit.
I'm using a Str build so range isn't really an option. I have the fire shield, but I can't get the timing just right to roll through his attacks. The rolling feels odd compared to DS1/2.
I'm playing through Demon Souls for the first time and feel like I've been playing like a faggot. In Dark Souls I bulked up on armour and never made an attempt to dodge attacks, even during boss fights, I'd just hold up my shield and swing my weapon when I had the chance. I did it throughout the whole game.
So far I've done 1-1, 1-2, 2-1 and 3-1 of Demon Souls, using the same tactic. During boss fights I've been relying on magic attacks. For your pic I hid behind a wall where he couldn't reach and kept shooting him with my magic attacks until he died.
Am I ruining the game for myself or should I consider experimenting with a different play style? The patrician choice from what I've seen seems to be ditch the armour, go for rolling and dodging. From what I understand there are no shields / armour in Bloodborne, so I'll be forced to do that anyway when I get to it.
>People who only ever played DaS shit on DeS cause its not as hard as they would like
What? DeS is by far the hardest game in the series, this has been agreed upon since forever. Usually when people go from DaS to DeS they complain it is too difficult, not too easy.
Is this a new meme?
you can use a lot of stuff to make the game easier on you like
mentioned, plus you can farm a fuckton of healing items and completely cheese the game
I wouldn't call using the right gear/etc cheesing because what else is the fucking point of fire resist gear for example, if not to be used against fire enemies?
having a fuckton of grass to heal yourself quickly and easily though really takes away from the game in my opinion
just block them, stop rolling
Neither games are really hard though.
The only time its hard is maybe on your very first playthrough when you're still getting used to the movement and don't know how to upgrade weapons.
Once you figure that out then at most maybe some of the optional bosses will push your shit in, but nobody should have trouble beating the game. You can even summon people to beat the boss for you.
Well, spend your souls and through your bodiless soul against the grindstone till you GIT GUD, focusing on learning to roll through his shit. Frustrating, but it's the manly way anon.
I know the PS4 has a lot of remasters, but anyone hoping for a DeS remaster? I never got a chance to play it, even though I had a PS3. I played DaSI and II on Pee-Cee, so would love to experience DeS at 60 FPS as well. Was so awkward going from DaSII to BB from a solid 60 to less than 30 FPS at times
Bloodborne's backstep/sidestep mechanic and overall player speed makes not having actual armor not really that bad. Oh and then there's the old hunters bone which makes you fucking nightcrawler litterally. By time I was midway through the game I was a fucking phantom speed wise. You start to play that game like you've got ice skates one.
Souls games are more about knowledge of your opponents and your own moveset really, it's hard at first when you don't know shit, but becomes easy as fuck when everything is memorised.
Now, good reaction times and a tactical mind will make it smoother sure, but to some these games start hard and remain hard, to others their pretty straightforward.
I'd call them hard games from my perspective, but more 7/10? than extremely difficult.
I've noticed that most of the gun comes from how broken some thing were. Motion blade, rat ring , blessed weapons, those babies in the bottom of the valley of defilement, those black skeletons, the regular Skeltons, the dam damn spear that broke your gear, some black phantoms, the game got pretty annoying when it counted.
that picture should not be giving the this boner, dammit.
Also, best armor was never available in DeS. Thats just bullshit yo.
>people getting emotional on Gwyn because of the music
>people getting emotional on Artorias
are you people for real? how can you people feel so attached/care about them so much if that's the first time you even meet them
>b-but I read some item descriptions
this is just ridiculous
didn't mean to quote that post, woops
but I'll use the cue to mention how Bjorr helps you in that fight if you save him, that's a character that you have previously made a connection with
I never felt bad for any boss. The only boss I felt somewhat touched by was Priscilla literally because of the doll description and when she let me leave. I always feel bad when I summon people because you just gotta give your summon bros a boss fight which means she gonna die.
>I never felt bad for any boss
Did you play DeS?
>mfw Maiden Astraea
Sound's pretty weaksauce.
In DeS I played mostly as a quality build, medium - light armour, decent shield, and a variety of weapons. Think I enjoy myself the most when I'm mixing up being a Doge Master and Shield Bearer. Never really done a proper magic playthrough in a souls game for some reason.
Probably. Black Phantom Selen Vinland and Lord Rydyell have weapons that permanently pierce through shields and armor. Flat out 30 percent damage received when hit, and Selen Vinland is in the Valley of Defilement swamp where you are immobilized, while Lord Rydyell is in a corridor, and he uses a spear. That's brutal. A spear that penetrates shields and he's also on a hallway map.
Black phantom Scirvir is easy compared to these two, because he can fall off a cliff and you can cast DeSu's unique silence miracle, which stops all magic from being cast in an AoE.
Oh yeah, I played DeS. The Maiden she knew one day that the slayer of demon's would arrive one day and shouldn't have taken upon herself to accept the demon's soul. Her cause was noble but she still should of waited.....eternity after eternity.
I still don't have pure bladestone after all these years, i've killed the black phantom skelly and hidden path skelly more than 10,000 times
I just have the absolute worst luck imaginable, fml
they chose their path, no one stands in my way and lives to tell the tale
that's why I spared Priscilla, she didn't stand in my way
I roleplay, sorry ;=;
I found the drop rates for the black phantom skelly in area 4-2 quite low. The one behind the fake wall.
Step 1, go offline.
2, Suicide a few times by jumping off the cliff. After about 5 or so deaths, go back to the Nexus to update the area world tendency. If its black, go back in.
Suicide some more if more black skellies don't appear.
When in pure black, go to the old hero archstone, backtrack to the open cliff area to find two black skellies.
Farm from these.
Recommended in NG+ after dark ending, so you have soul suck which insta-kills if you backstab without getting seen.
Only problem is that enemies in NG+ are tough as nails.
Also, you can glitch out Saint Urbain and the red phantom under Patches' trap to farm unlimited Shards of Archstone, which turns you back to human if you are in spirit.
There's a whole system going on there, to help you find your pure bladestone.
Alternatively, find a friend online and ask for one. With the item dupe glitch, someone must have it already. This method is pretty dirty though, but it saves time.
Yeah I've been doing all this except for the shards of archstone/friend dropping since 2009
Fucking game just hates me mang, it's the only game I don't have a platinum for and the one I have the most hours in simultaneously heh
When I found mine, I did it the long and hard way. There are also items that boost your item discovery like the "large sword of searching", another item from the same map, dropped by the old hero boss.
So I had all these trinkets equipped while I manipulated the game world as much as I could to get mine.
In the past, some boards said that having too much luck reduced your chances of drops, but for me I pumped my luck to 30, and wielded the Blueblood sword (scales with luck, amazing!) in preparation to that hunt.
I think my way was excessive, but I have seen streams where anons with 8 luck have had pure bladestones drop for them in NG. Amazing. Guess its really just luck.
Are you me? I literally picked this back up to play again and hopefully finish this time and just completed the same levels and I feel like I'm missing something too I'd like to do Co op but it seems dead my Sl is 29
