What vocation you are affects how your stats grow, so leveling up as a Warrior will give you higher strength and hp, leveling as a Mage or Sorceror will give you higher magic, etc.

Early on, that's not likely to happen. Wolves and goblins are weakass pussies. But towards end-game, enemies like ogres and dragons can take a serious beating and depending on your class could oneshot you.

You gain DP with experience, but it follows a weird growth pattern where you gain a lower percentage of DP with higher gains of EXP. For example when you kill an enemy worth 80 EXP you get 20% of that back in DP, but if you kill an enemy worth 5000 EXP you only get like 5% back in DP. For example, they'll know harpies are weak to lightning (maybe? I don't remember exactly) and they'll yell it out to you.

It's pretty much trial and error/observation of where an enemy seems weak. Plus pawns will suggest strategy.
You can look it up but it's fun to fight a tough monster then find a way to eviscerate it.

Here's my shorthand impressions:

Very neat open world with lackluster weather system.

Some good TECHNOLOGY moments like your physical build influencing combat, using destructibles, damage points on monsters etc. Liked how hydra can swallow an explosive barrel and then you can shoot the bulge so she explodes. Game seems to have a love-hate relationship with such moments.

Very good class variety.

Very obtuse and unnecessary stat system, item overload, endless cascade of menus you have to fiddle with every step of the way, detracting from the experience.

Cities are well designed scale wise but their layouts are far from impressive and points of interest seem too conveniently placed, they quickly become just hubs you run in and out of.

I view pawn party system as completely lackluster addition to gameplay and don't care about simplistic AI tagging along and helping with battles. I'd rather it was pure single player experience than this. And I know you can play it like it's a SP game etc.

While movesets are varied, playing with warrior gets you caught up in spamming two different moves over and over again, even playing with Zweihander in DS offers more variety.

Love the archery.

The game on the whole feels like a definition of "unpolished gem" or whatever. Will play it more to see bigger creatures but I mostly enjoy it for sprawling fields. Night time is underwhelming.

Actually on the PC version you can just play through hard mode the first time around. But it has been so long since I played that I don't even remember the controls or anything. I remember the game having a very fair difficulty though, it wasn't a cakewalk.

Hard mode doesn't affect enemy health. Buy warrior vocation for 1k discipline, get bastion augment, equip it and viola, you are now immune to almost everything (physical damage wise, buy sorcerer and get awareness for magic damage) until post-game.

If you REALLY want to, get to high ranks in fighter for the other defensive augment whos name escapes me right now.

Hard mode is only hard if you don't know anything about the game. Super early game as in before gran soren can be annoying due to harpies/wolves/the Hydra immediately killing you in one hit even as a fighter.

And before someone counters thus with "but BBI (endgame) equipment has +800 strength!", not only is that endgame, but it's balanced against monsters with 800 defence. That is, the equipment makes you competitve... if you didn't junk your stats.

I actually would jump around a lot as a mage to fire off focus bolts mid air, to avoid the animation lock/recoil and get extra damage from the jumping attack augment. It worked out because my pawn at the time was a warrior, but he'd start bunny hopping for seemingly no reason.

I'd recommend putting one at the healing spring between the fort and the bloodwater beach. There are a lot of escort quests to both of those locations, and the bottled spring water can be a helpful healing item to have on hand.
