I find it weird that Disgaea 5 didn't even have the standard dragon (except as a dish that Killia was eating)

I played disgaea 1 and found it pretty terrible. The game seemed to be horrendously balanced and while there were a few interesting gimmick levels, most were just generic repetitive shit. I also hated the story and characters but that's not a big deal to me. I've heard that the later games are much improved, but could someone please elaborate on which aspects of the game are improved? I don't really care if there's more item world / postgame / grinding stuff, I'm just interested in the main story.

Seconding this. They're all great games (some stories/characters less great) but they add so many new mechanics with each installment that I imagine it would be hard to play them out of order.
Do note that D1's art style and atmosphere is very different from later games, which divides the community somewhat. I personallyI very much prefer the art direction of the first game and find the later art increasingly generic.

the only ones that really stayed are Nether Nobles. Living Armors were basically combined with Dragon Zombies.

Jacks were the fucking coolest and I'm mad we didn't keep them. But they had to make sure the shitty waifu monster that they made for DD2 (Sea Angels) made it into Disgaea 5.

Sages also kept the Android's Land Decimator skill from Disgaea 4's port which is what makes them so good, because the item world rewards you (or rather requires you) for clearing stages instead of just skipping

Every 500 levels, you can increase the cap by another 500 in the item assembly. The max is actually 9999, I think but you get diminishing returns pretty early.

It's just a secondary weapon. In the normal sense it's just a second weapon that you switch to for other shit, like a cleric wielding a bow in her weapon slot.

They'll switch to the appropriate weapon to do skills. So if you have sword in main and axe in sub, you'll have all your skills on display and switch to axe if you use an axe skill.

There's an evility that lets you dual wield your weapons, and another that lets you get the full stats

HOWEVER a very important thing is that any innocents in the sub weapon slot are active regardless, which includes unique innocents from joke weapons. So you can equip the megaphone in your sub weapon slot, which has an innocent that gives you a 30% chance to capture an enemy when you kill it. Even in the sub weapon slot you'll always have that 30% chance.

I think most people hate it because of the game breaking (or apparently system destroying) crashing bugs, but for some reason i never experienced them.
The story felt like if you took the first half of 4's story and removed the "twist" of Nemo being the badguy for the latter chapters, but for me the nostalgia was enough to carry it.

Killia's is pretty useful for cleaning up the map a bit. Christos I thought was shit until it saved me on the void dark fight. Zerokens is nice, but I don't like how weak they are. I've never used magnus or the pink girls.
DLC Characters best is Laharl, easily. I love his meteors and laugh. Valvatorez I always forget about the secondary effect and am presently surprised. Mao's isn't very flashy but I find it very useful as a general tool to have.

I also gave my skull the comet star one and I like that.

I wish Emizel had one. I know he's not an overlord, but still.

The rule for Overloads is that being an overlord isn't an exact requirement. Just need to have a strength on par with an overlord or greater, and something something personal resolve I guess.

Being an overlord isn't exactly about this or that probably, its mainly about power or something. Once you're at the right power level, and have some plot of land to rule, you're an overlord.

There's one ending where he becomes an overlord after beating Etna by mistake.

Just like previous games, there's 40 weapon tiers, with 3 colors per weapon (for Normal/Rare/Legendary). There's also a large handful of joke weapons which don't fit into the weapon rank list. Rank 40 weapons also actually have 3 versions (one stolen from Item God 2 in the item world like always, another is from Netherworld research, and the third is from a mystery room in the item world)

And I'm lying a bit. There's actually carnage versions of every weapon though they share the sprites of their non-carnage versions. Their stats are way bigger

Anyways, once you've picked up a weapon/wielded a magichange weapon you can change a matching weapon's sprite to that whenever you want. keep in mind you can only use the same rarities you've owned. So if you have only picked up the Rare version of a weapon, that's the only sprite you can use for it.

A whole lot more quality of life stuff can be improved, like not having to unequip an item to customize it at the item assembly
AS for new featuress, just make shit up to add depth.
Give characters hat with unique effects. Hell, give all gear a unique effect that you can upgrade and move around, like super innocents. 5 has custom netherworlds and maps already. I've beaten the game and never even looked into that stuff. Doesn't mean I don't like the effort, they just need to be better and have useful effects. Make city building beneficial and people will learn to like it. Nobody thinks they need something until they've used it.

Funny, I downloaded the 1st game a few days ago as I heard it is a good series and after playing Soul Nomad (made by the same group and more or less the same tactical gameplay) I got an itch to finally try it out.

Any worthwhile tips for a newbie on the first game?

For the players who are having problems with gun users, how are you building them?

These characters have damage that scale off speed and hit instead of attack so some might be putting the wrong items on them.

Also don't forget guns put a debuff on speed much like how axes put a debuff on defense, except that it doesn't have a speed or hit penalty for using them and are ranged. Maybe this is why they scale a little more poorly?

My gun users are decent, and I always attributed their lower damage to the fact that I used utility evilities that increase range or make the next attack always hit instead of purely focusing on plus damage or stat evilities.

Disgaea is a Lv9999 millions of points per damage type over the top game, where the majority of the game most be post-game in the end.

Getting through the story is easy enough, however it doesn't really end there.

The game encourages you to try to bullshit it whenever you can. After awhile you can probably level up by the thousands in a few minutes.

There are maps geared entirely towards you figuring out that you can bullshit that map heavily to level up.
