when your computer is off, it's actually using a little tiny trickle of electricity to see if you press the power button
when your computer is hibernating, it's actually using a little tiny trickle of electricity to see if you press the power button or anything on the keyboard
I used to keep mine on. Then I realised there's no fucking point in doing so. 'It'll last longer', who gives a toss. 5 years and it's outdated enough that it's time to replace the whole cunt anyway. So now I save electricity and keep my home cooler.
Besides, most people are Windowsfags which means they'd have to reboot every day to stop their piece of shit OS from slowing to a crawl.
you're mixing up hibernate and sleep.
hibernate means that the contents of RAM are saved to disk and the computer turns off.
in sleep components are kept in a very low power state
Mommy and daddy don't pay my electricity bill faggot. Also I like total silence when I sleep
>owning a computer
>sitting behind a desk as a fat virgin neet
>not being a mobile pussy-smashing master race
Stay a disgrace to the white race neo/v/eddit.
I also do that, but I want to sleep like a normal person. Everytime I'm in the dark and it's completely silent, I start to hear voices and overthink my life. Truly life is hell
>keeping your computer on when you're not going to use it for 1+ hours
aside from downloads, for what purpose?
My computer has fucking bright blue LEDs. Try sleeping with that shit on, faggot.
every second electricity runs into your computer you are creating needless heat that escapes into the universe as entropy
you are actively killing the universe by accelerating its heat death you fuck
i knew both of those feelings but nowadays i have to absolute silence to sleep at night
>links related: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-395896/Rooney-I-just-sleep-Hoover-on.html
>My computer never shuts down properly. Ever.
>Will only power off if I hit the power switch on the back.
>If I hold the power button down, it just restarts itself.
>Only fix is to get a new motherboard.
i read once that turning your computer off at night to save power is pointless because startup consumes hella power. that was like 8 years ago though and the guy who wrote it was probably wrong in the first place.
>buy new 980 for GTA V and hook it up
>PSU pops a capacitor the instant i hit the power button
>sounds like somebody just fired a fucking handgun in my room
haven't left my PC on while sleeping since then out of fear that it's going to burst into flames once i let my guard down
the case my motherboard is installed in is from a prebuilt, so i can't plug the case power switch into the motherboard
i have to take a different fucked up case, plug that power switch into my motherboard, and prop the two cases against each other in a T-shape
I sleep with a fan as well, but sometimes this will happen to me and according to my doctor it's because of the fan. Nothing feels worse than waking up too early with extreme pain in your eye.
I gotta have it on when I sleep though.
>always left old computer on at nights
>shitty fans were noisy now and then
>start making up voices from the fan sounds
>get new computer and move it to the living room
do you sleep with your eyes open anon? the only thing a fan can fuck up is your throat if you sleep facing up, it's why I don't turn my ceiling fan on.
Reading this thread makes me feel like I know very little about computers despite using them for many years, like most people around here. That whole thing about not turning your machine off ever, or keep a download on always whatever it might be, I don't think I understand why people do this. Is it just to save some minutes in the first case?
I have an old shitty desktop from 2007 I've been using every single day until last year that I'd turn off every night after I was done using it like you're "supposed" to do. Never had any problems with it.
I guess I'm just a very tame user.
>tfw midtier laptop from 2010 still running strong
>tfw only time I turn it off is to clean the dust from the fans so it doesn't overheat
I think I sleep with them sort of halfway open. According to my eye doctor it happens because the fan dries out my eye and then my eyelid sticks to the surface of my eye and pulls at the cornea which I guess is what causes the pain. Shit isn't fun.
I have a feeling that for a lot of people, at least ones here, it's because they're so used to having the hum of their computers running next to them all day that they feel like they need it at night as well.
>because they're so used to having the hum of their computers running next to them all day that they feel like they need it at night as well.
That's a reasonable theory. I know I used to love silence and darkness, but ever since I blew my eardrums trying to be a badass and shot a bunch of guns without ear pro, I absolutely need some kind of noise in the background, the eeeeeee is maddening.
>turn bedroom pc off at night
>it's a lot colder and dead quiet
I need my gaming space heater.
>leaving it open on night that you don't notice it when RAT starts operating
>giving the bad guy ample time to do evil stuff
I spilled soup on this laptop, and if I put it to sleep it immediately wakes back up. If the keyboard drivers are installed, the shift-key is always down, but in months-gone-by it was any number of letters, and some still worked.
But here's the thing, if I turn it off, the drivers instantly reinstall, AND the first 10 minutes of the machine turning on is the mobo speaker going BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP because of the key's being pressed. I paid $70 to have it inspected and cleaned and the guy said "hey, it looked fixed when I was in there" but it still does it.
I can, however, put it into hibernate mode. And I got a free* usb keyboard from the guy, because he couldn't fix the problem or even find the problem.
*Free, of course, even though I paid $70.
Probably the mouse moving slightly.
I put mine on hibernate because I don't want it turning on at night. Bootup is pretty much the same as sleep anyway. I'll get an ssd someday so startup time will be a nonissue.
What's even the advantage of keeping it on?
All I've seen was "so you don't have to wait for it to boot up." I don't care about it, as it's like 1-2 minutes and I can just grab something from the kitchen in that time as I usually do.
Is the power usage on hibernate that negligible, and if so, by how much?
I only ever leave it on out of sheer laziness.
My computer has been acting up lately. Whenever I turn it on from hibernate or just powering it back up I sometimes get a half-start (I have no word for this), what I mean is the computer powers up but half of my led and fan goes on, it won't show up on display either. Is it time for a new psu /v/?
Nobody understood your post, but I do.
The thought that everything I do, even being alive, makes entropy increase is depressing.
Whatever though, eventually the entire universe will be completely dark and dead anyways regardless of us.
>start DLing +50GB of elf porn
>go to work
>starts raining during noon
>come back home
>computer is off
Just admit it. You fags only don't turn your computer off because you're too lazy to look at a reboot screen and since your life is tethered to your computer you're never sure when you don't need your PC. Even if you're in bed.
The PC I built now 10 years ago I was using until 3 years ago when I built my current one, I passed it down to my brother and it still plays 60fps/1080pon medium quality at this point for AAA titles, other titles are 60fps/1080p/high (like Rocket League). As long as you take care of, having to swap it that often isn't necessary unless there is a huge qualitative leap like what we should see soon with GPU 14nm tech
>torrents takes 2 nights to complete
fuck i need to change to fiber
turning on an electronic device always results in a brief power surge which can cause a failing component to completely fail. Not really a huge concern with modern electronics. Your components are probably going to be long obsolete before they wear out.
If leaving your computer on at night raises your power bill perceptibly enough that it worth even having a second thought about, you need to reevaluate your life's choices and get a better job, poorfag.
Daily reminder that a machine that is truly 'off' can never turn itself on.
It is, although I think at some point I updated the GPU about 7 years ago or so, I setup skidrow's DDDA release on it earlier.
Games that are as heavy in requirements like PoE also play fine.
maybe it's using the internet? There was a setting I had to turn off to stop it from powering back on when I put mine on hibernate, but then again that was only for hibernate and I don't know if it's the same for sleep.
>leaving your computer on during the summer
Rr you could just literally pull the switch out and not be retarded. It literally takes like.. 10 seconds of inspection to realize it pops right out. You guys really are fucking useless
Not that guy, but lets say for the sake of argument that your computer pulls 1000 W because you run 2 AMD GPUs.
That'd be like $50 a month that you could spend on a good meal or something.
Rich people don't get rich by wasting money.
Apart from downloading stuff I usually turn my pc off every night and I've been using it almost everyday for 7 years. Only problem with it is that the fan goes apeshit trying to keep the cpu cool if my room isn't airconditioned and sometimes overheats and shuts off from playing games.
>be fjord viking
>forgot to turn floor heaters on
> -22°F outside
>turn computer off for the night
>cold slowly creeps from the window and fills the room over night
>wake up at 2 AM. 60°F in my room
>power mustardrace on
>room slowly regains comfy temperature of 75°F
I could alternatively get an actual heater but my computer works wonders
>leave GTA V downloading over night while I sleep
>have computer set to never shut down by itself
>wake up in morning to find the computer off
>boot it up and find it finished the DL successfully
I don't even expose my PlayStation 4 to that torment.
Please no bully
guys. sometimes my computer doesnt turn off anymore. it just sits at the the default "logging off" page/window. is my pc broke ?
Me too anon, used to put PC on sleep every night before it started acting all wonky. I even tried reinstalling the OS, and it still doesn't work any better so it's some sort of BIOS/mobo issue I guess.
>can't sleep if there's sound
>put my computer in sleep mode anyway because fuck booting it up every day
>lying in bed
>just drifting off to slee-
>fucking computer randomly exits sleep mode
I have NO IDEA why this fucking happens but every time it does I"m angry as fuck.
Thats why you leave it downloading something overnight, just torrent an uncensored JAV every night, that is what i do, i wake up and the first thing i do is masturbate to HD japanese pussy, feels good man.
Can of compressed air, or you can even get a little system instead of buyingthem if you clean as often as you should.
Realistically it being so poorly handled is part of the reason you would have required an upgrade sooner than normal and why people are generally under the impression that updates have to happen so often.
Event viewer, Windows logs, check the latest entries for wake up calls. In most cases it's the lan card. Just deactivate the power features for it in the device manager.
You're using it wrong if you think so.
I'm not even joking, compessed air is seriously wonders whether caked uplike that or just one time, although if caked up like that you might want something a little stronger like http://www.amazon.com/Metro-Vacuum-ED500-500-Watt-Electric/dp/B001J4ZOAW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1338115143&sr=8-3
I have this exact model and can vouch for it, don't put it too close as it is strong as fuck especially with nozzles on it.
I wish I can always turn on my computer. But I'm lazy to argue with my mom about that electricity bills.
I like to live dangerously, especially in bed.
>tfw you clean everything out and apply new thermal paste
I attached some air filters to the outside of my intakes and now dust isn't an issue anymore.
>they go to sleep with the pulsating LED's going
>they waste hundreds on the power bill by keeping their pc on
Thats cute anons.
The electricity saved is honestly minimal.
You can actually run the numbers but I've also tested it one year on and one year off with minimal difference.
I've got 760 and have no problems playing any game I want usually on high at 60fps on 1080p and I have 2 other monitors running misc apps on 1080p at same time.
It's really not, it's the safest way to clean that shit, and using an air compressor like the one I linked is a very cheap oalternative, it's what I would suggest in fact, but if you're not ready for that because of cost or whatever, just use the one time air cans.
I can tell you I've had mine for 5~ years now and I also let a teacher in my family borrow it to clean out their PCs at the school, as well as some family members from time to time, it hasn't shown any problems with slowing down at all.
I only clean out once every 6~ months because I leave my PC on and don't like to kill the record though.
>tfw when every fucking cent counts
Anyone else think he was
handsome as fuck?
Don't look around your room too closely when that happens. I also recommend sleeping with your light on now.
That water's flowing down the hill whether I tun pc off or not.
>mocking bird from the other end of the street chirps literally all fucking night
>so loud it sounds like it's in my room
I can not believe someone still refers to the electric bill. One has to be living in the fucking Somalia for that to be an issue. What the fuck?!
"You must have Mummy and Daddy paying for your electric bills"
Electricity has been cheap as fuck ever since the nuclear energy. Fuck all y'all.
If it's not cheap for you, you live in a fucking shithole.
Wow that was fucking cringe.
that said cleaning your stuff is something you should do, whether you buy throw away cans, use a vacuum or something similar (be VERY careful doing so), or purchase an air compressor like the one I linked earlier off of Amazon.
The purchase depends on you and how often you intend to use it. If you clean your PC fairly regularly, go for the air compressor. If you're going for it once but want it to be CLEAN go for the throw away compressed air can (and use it properly or it's a fucking waste), if you don't care and just want to clean some of the dust off cause you've ignored it for years, use a vacuum cleaner but be careful.
Never use a swiffer or anything else, or so help me Woden.
Florida here, $10/kWh, it's not terrible but it's not great.
Unfortunately electric company monopolize usually, so at least in my area this leads to MUCH higher prices once you go over your first 1000 kWh per month.
Turn your updates off. Fucking PC knows when to do it's updates and wakes up to do them.
>keep computer on desk because fuck the floor
>always cold because of all the fans
That's not how it works at all.
I don't turn mine off and my PCs all have lasted as hand me downs that get handed down again, poor care has nothing to do with leaving it on or not, that'll only effect a few easily changed parts like HDDs.
>Each time I've tried to sleep in my room with it completely dark some kind of ghost or something messes with me.
>My computer has fucking bright blue LEDs. Try sleeping with that shit on, faggot.
fun fact, blue light has been scientifically proven to reduce how well people and animals sleep.
I know this because one of my dorm mates back in college was a bio major who worked with mice in the uni sleep lab and was testing for that very thing [incidentally dim red lights are good to have around while you sleep], and because he had this bright blue desk clock that would shine directly at me while I slept, or tired to sleep. When I pointed this out to him pic related was his reaction. he apologized and let me put a book in front of the clock when I went to sleep [significantly later than he did]
Heat always transfers from high temperature to another region of lower temperature. Since your computer doesn't sweat like humans do, it's all about transfering the heat energy away from the components..
..Yes, it should work if you have overheating issues
>tfw falling asleep comfy
Thanks to my SSD rebooting isn't an issue, so I shut it down. Especially because my computer randomly doesn't dump RAM correctly, so it helps with that.
Also, fuck the LED lights on my computer at night, I like complete darkness when I sleep!
>set up the alarm
>turn power off
>cellphone doesn't turn on when the alarm is supposed to play
WHY the fuck man
Even my 15 year old Nokia does this
my amp pulls more than my idling computer
>foobar plugin commands pc to sleep at certain time
>I set sleep to 90m on remote for amp and lay down
>Starts to worry by letting PC on too much time
>Power it off after months
>Try to turn it on
>PC is gone
When my fans start after being off for too long they start making a grinding noise.
>8 cents per kwh
Sometimes I wish I lived in a third world country like China or the US where electricity costs nothing. I pay 0.22€/kWh which must be like five dollars.
Same here. I have to use a mask and look like a fag while I sleep because there's some light pollution outside my window, but fuck if I don't sleep peacefully in pitch darkness.
>tfw nanami still wishes me an oyasumi every night even after all these years
I'm never upgrading from win7.
>there's some light pollution outside my window
Could you explain
I'll leave you once a true Windows OS comes out.
Until then, I'm staying with you.
You know how you can barely see the stars at night in the metro, but if you went out into the country side and you can see millions? that's a result of people littering in the sky
I get it, I was thinking something different than Light pollution. Thanks for clearing that up anons.
But the nanami theme also works on win8.1
I know it because i'm using it
Joey aged nicely.
Joey > Chandler > Ross > Monica > Rachel > Phoebe
>Leave computer on at night
>Wake up at 3 in the morning feeling like the sun just got an inch closer to earth
>Over a lifetime it saves you a few thousand bucks.
For all of you who need noise at night:
i use to be this way but i slowly conditioned myself to deal with it. The hum of a computer fan is kinda soothing. But only if the speed remains consistent. If it speeds up randomly my peace is ruined..
I knew this, so I gave both options.
Just for you Anon
Startup power is usually pretty decent, so acuall a fair comparison over a 24 hour or week period of shutting it off versus having it on 24/7 comes very close and usually which you should do depends on how often you use it.
Ah I always fuck up and forget the cents symbol isn't up there, it's 10 cents, actually closer to 11 this year, 10.87 for Florida.
7.82 dollars actually to do so, thank god we don't use old lightbulbs anymore and it's more like 19watts for the same dealio.
>tfw you're BIOS is fucked and you can't put PC in sleep mode or it will just freeze and you can't completely stops showing up on the monitor until you force shut it off
>mfw my rent includes Internet, heating, water and electricity
>mfw rent is only 380€/month
damn it feels good to be a
university student living on government money in a student apartment
i'm beyond financially comfortable, but would still turn off my PC to save on electricity.
would you leave a light on just so you never have to flick it on again? no?
you don't get wealthy by being flippant with money, no matter how small the amount.
>tfw booting your PC with the OS on an SSD
>turns power off
>next day, computer won't turn on
>don't know what to do
>somehow fix it
>power goes out again
>computer turns off
>turn it on the way I fixed it before
>it starts up then shuts off after 10 seconds
>freak out don't know what to do
>am not tech savvy, so assume it's dead
>assume it's psu or something
>buy stuff off amazon to save info from harddrive to try and import to new computer
>shit doesn't work at all
I still have that computer in my closet. I don't know what to do. I had a bunch of stuff on there I'd like back. It's been 4 years and I still think about it to this day.
that always keeps me up at night. not even about the money, I just hate having something like that running constantly. everything needs time to shut down and rest. there's a walmart near us that hasn't closed once since it was built in around 2009. that's just wrong.
>friend complains that his computer takes ever to boot because of shitty HDD
>mfw listening to his complains while I have my OS on a brand new SSD
>turning off your computer
I can't be bothered to wait for it to boot up when I wake up. I also download a lot of stuff over night
I thought about plugging it into my new PC, but my new PC is the kind of PC that is just a monitor and everything is inside the monitor or whatnot.
I was too afraid to try to open the back and replace it, because at that point, I didn't have an external hdd to save all the stuff on the new one in case I fuck something up.
>snow storm causes 3 separate power surges over like 30 minutes
>every time my computer resets itself
>it's at night and my light is off so I don't notice
>after the 3rd time I freak out and figure my computer is broken and just shut it off so it doesn't break all the way
>later that day my sister asks if I noticed the power surging
>feel like an idiot
My PC has been on 24/7 for 8 years. I've only changed the graphics card when the fan on the old one died
It's bottlenecked by the CPU in games but otherwise it's still running fine
yeah don't try to do that on an all and one PC, we were talking for more accessible PC separate from monitor. honestly if you can afford to just take it to a data repair place.
Anon, please get a better computer.
Other than that, I guess you could it take to some tech nigger who will charge you too much to move everything over to a portable hard drive or fix your old PC
>tfw the slightest sound caused by someone else while you're trying to sleep pisses you off
>tfw the slightest sound caused by someone else while you're trying to sleep makes your butthole pucker because you live alone
I get sleep paralysis or something similar to it whenever i dont hear noise at night, i just leave a movie playing in the background.
I wish i could live without this shit, it is honestly annoying, just as i am falling asleep i start hearing whispers and screams, i cannot move my body unless i try really, really hard and if my eyes are still half closed i see horrible things, one time i saw hands knocking in my window, trying to get inside, i know that its just my brain but i swear that if i dont find a solution in the next 5 years i will just kill myself.
>Actually, a fan just moves air without significantly changing its temperature, to increase the evaporation of sweat. Leaving a fan running in an unoccupied room will not cool it; in fact, due to energy losses from the motor and viscous dissipation, a fan will slightly heat a room.
Doesn't happen any more but
>speakers buzz when I'm about to get a text usually
>speakers begin to buzz
>figure of FF5 Gilgamesh falls over
>I don't get a text
This. Blue light halts melatonin production in your body. This comes from our biological ancestors' rhythms of being awake during the day when there is a lot of blue light, and being asleep at night when there is more red light.
If you want your monitor to reflect this kind of lighting, download Flux. It makes your screen less blue at night and is customizable
Pay someone with a real computer to hook your old hard drive to his machine, then when he´s about to transfer data you offer him more money to leave you alone until you finish copying all your files and wiping the thing, only calling him to unplug your hard drive, then you bury said thing in your backyard.
This is what an uncle did when his toaster shat itself and he had to pay a friend to do magic on his computer, to this day i dont know if he was just embarassed of his weird porn, had gay stuff on it or if it was CP.
Your eyes need to adjust to it. Set it to the 60 minute transition and use a less intense night setting if you want. Trust me, after like 20 minutes of using it on night mode, it makes viewing much easier on your eyes.
Hell yeah motherfucker. This is the one I got, but I broke one of the horns. It's pretty goddamn small too.
The "do not turn off the computer" meme comes from the time when hardware was so shit it failed every couple hours. Today that doesn't happen, sure turning off your computer slightly degrades hard drive, but not turning on your computer degrades all components.
Pretty good. I'd that that.
Or an Exdeath.
Or one big thing that has all the Warriors of Dawn in it with those poses.
FF5 has the best designs.
>somehow it wakes up in the middle of the night
>powercfg shows the cause as unknown
>I already disabled wake up for all the usb devices
>also windows somehow forgets that I have 3 monitors every single time and my windows get all squashed on the first monitor
how do I stop this shit?
CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM >CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM >CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM >CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM >CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM >CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM >CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM
Eh, I still prefer total silence.
Then again, I must have gotten mine at a very low age since as far as I can remember, there has always been this wheeing noise I could focus on in my head.
>mfw I will never marry milana
Why even live?
>tfw raspberry pi seedbox/fileserver/webserver that runs 24/7
Yeah, so does your microwave and lighting around the house right. How else can they know if you press the button?
>Are they hard to use?
No, unless you're unfamiliar with Linux. There's guides for everything though.
>Do I need to know how to program?
>Can I use it to learn how to program?
That's pretty much what they're made for.
I know man, no fucking idea. Just came across some random fucking forum post one day and despite the tens of other programs running and connected to the internet, that's the one that needs to wake the computer to run.
