>>323864578 He has no more passion. Games were never his thing, he's a movie buff. What started as a one-off joke turned into a fun series for him to relive and remember the games of his childhood, but he already covered all the ones that he had any connection with. To keep the series going he kept digging deeper and deeper into shitty game territory but in doing so traded authentic emotion and nostalgia for manufactured outrage at terrible games he had never played before.
AVGN will continue its decay until he quits doing it. Right now that is his cash cow. It keeps people coming to his site. Without it he'd have to get a real job. He will continue to milk it for all its worth but at the cost of his soul.
>>323866361 Yes, again because he has passion for old board games he played as a child. Once those run out, and I suspect they either have or will soon, he will either stop Board James completely or it will degenerate into the same mess AVGN is in. The man excels when he is genuinely nostalgic.
>>323864578 I liked his video game covers he did in December.
And the Sub-Zero Mythologies video but I think that's just because I can relate to that video. I played it when I was younger and fucking hated it. Yet I kept playing it to get past the first level.
Honestly, his last really good video was the Tiger Handhelds one. It was really informative on how those things were ever popular. Really pout you in the mind of a kid who got them. Also the last time I felt there was some genuine anger in him.
He somehow managed to become worse at acting as time passed. Fuck if I know how that even happens. His anger now is very obviously forced, not funny and plain boring. Meanwhile on episodes like Roger Rabbit or Superman he genuinely seems mad as fuck.
What a shame to see the downfall of one of the icons of modern-ish internet.
>>323868590 I think he still is. I'll bite his newer videos lack the emotion and genuine feeling that they used to have, but he's still not that bad. I just hope the guy has a job or something on the side, or even his wife. I couldn't stand to hear that he and his family will be left with little to no income.
Can you really justify this? You can argue he's been doing this forever with the AVGN DVDs and Blu-Rays but even the shittiest AVGN episode is basically like a show or skit with actual production values in it and not two dumbfucks sitting on the couch talking about nonsense.
The movie single-handedly destroyed him. He was probably the most well liked e-celeb on /tv/ and /v/ before it came out, /tv/ used to always laugh at how much better James was than Douge or the other TGWTG autists. Then the movie came out and surprise James is just Douge with slightly better production values.
>>323868705 In a lot of the older videos I don't think he was acting. He had genuine frustration at a lot of those games since he played them as a kid. Sure some of it was acting, but quite a bit of it was just him repeating what I'm sure he felt as a kid...except with more swear words mixed in.
He isn't reviewing much of anything he's played or experienced as a kid which is why it just doesn't feel so genuine. >>323868787 I can't but I never watched James and Mike Mondays too often in general.
I just binged on his older stuff in the last few days and i noticed that his stuff was always pretty badly acted and amateurish but it looks like he had fun with them, i'm guessing he's just tired of it and maybe matured a bit, making it hard to act like a spazzing child again, i do enjoy his Mike and James vids though, and they to catch every Mike stream i can, plus the Board James videos were fun, i hope he just completely drop the AVGN for now and does something else, maybe a movie critic persona, given how few avgn vids we get he might do it sometime soon.
>>323869193 He doesn't even review movies like he used to, when he would sit down with a script and critique it, now he just rambles his autism with Mike a few hours after they come out of the theater.
>>323869283 It's a shame. I subscribed to him during his prime. I still am, but now it's a little painful to watch. It's like I'm seeing a dog that I've been with my entire life since birth and now he's just old. I know what comes next, he loses viewers, he stops uploading videos, eventually the time will come. It's sad and I don't know if I can keep watching desu.
>>323869514 He used to do many movie reviews that way, hell the TMNT 3 review is honestly one of his best works and as a huge TMNT kid I can confirm he's right on the money with everything he said. Also the Rocky movies, and a few others he reviewed that way, hell that's how Monster Madness used to be. Now he just rambles shit with Mike for 30 minutes.
>>323868814 Kinda reminds me of Spongebob and how it also went to shit after the movie.
>>323869038 Power Glove and Dick Tracy are a couple of my favorites just for the fact that his frustration came out so well. I think the start of his downfall began sometime after Action 52/Cheetamen. From those episodes backwards they're all quite excellent. Still, with episodes like Zelda CD-i, I would bet he didn't experience as a kid and still made great content for them despite that, so it goes both ways really.
>>323869748 I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed how he just kinda...stopped with the movie reviews like that. He used to do them all the time like with Indiana Jones 4, Spider-Man 3, the Simpsons movie but then he just kinda stopped except when it came to Monster Madness. And then half of Monster Madness was basically like those 30 minute Mike reviews. They're okay but I miss shit that was actually scripted. I'll take scripted over nonescripted when it comes to most e-celebs whenever possible. >>323870110 Yes, but he still had experience with the Zelda series as a whole. He knew how the mechanics should and shouldn't work in those games. He didn't experience the CDI games specifically but he knew the Zelda games from around that era.
And I think it started after the movie in my personal opinion. I think he still had some good stuff post-100 but I think only one episode stands out to me past the movie.
Honestly, I feel like he just doesn't have anything new to bring. All the recent videos have been "Man, this game is hard, and I'm not making this up." or just shouting fuck The first hundred episodes are great though
>>323869748 EVERYTHING James does that's TMNT-related is gold, like his equivalent to Spoony's Ultima reviews. James actually reviewed the entire 87 series objectively instead of either praising it out of nostalgia or shitting on it mindlessly.
