He has no more passion. Games were never his thing, he's a movie buff. What started as a one-off joke turned into a fun series for him to relive and remember the games of his childhood, but he already covered all the ones that he had any connection with. To keep the series going he kept digging deeper and deeper into shitty game territory but in doing so traded authentic emotion and nostalgia for manufactured outrage at terrible games he had never played before.

AVGN will continue its decay until he quits doing it. Right now that is his cash cow. It keeps people coming to his site. Without it he'd have to get a real job. He will continue to milk it for all its worth but at the cost of his soul.

The last Monster Madness was half shit half mediocre. He can't even do that right anymore.

The movie single-handedly destroyed him.
He was probably the most well liked e-celeb on /tv/ and /v/ before it came out, /tv/ used to always laugh at how much better James was than Douge or the other TGWTG autists. Then the movie came out and surprise James is just Douge with slightly better production values.

In a lot of the older videos I don't think he was acting.
He had genuine frustration at a lot of those games since he played them as a kid. Sure some of it was acting, but quite a bit of it was just him repeating what I'm sure he felt as a kid...except with more swear words mixed in.

He isn't reviewing much of anything he's played or experienced as a kid which is why it just doesn't feel so genuine.

It's a shame. I subscribed to him during his prime. I still am, but now it's a little painful to watch. He used to do many movie reviews that way, hell the TMNT 3 review is honestly one of his best works and as a huge TMNT kid I can confirm he's right on the money with everything he said. Also the Rocky movies, and a few others he reviewed that way, hell that's how Monster Madness used to be.

Power Glove and Dick Tracy are a couple of my favorites just for the fact that his frustration came out so well.
I think the start of his downfall began sometime after Action 52/Cheetamen. From those episodes backwards they're all quite excellent.
Still, with episodes like Zelda CD-i, I would bet he didn't experience as a kid and still made great content for them despite that, so it goes both ways really.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed how he just kinda...stopped with the movie reviews like that.
He used to do them all the time like with Indiana Jones 4, Spider-Man 3, the Simpsons movie but then he just kinda stopped except when it came to Monster Madness.
And then half of Monster Madness was basically like those 30 minute Mike reviews. They're okay but I miss shit that was actually scripted. I'll take scripted over nonescripted when it comes to most e-celebs whenever possible.

Yes, but he still had experience with the Zelda series as a whole. He knew how the mechanics should and shouldn't work in those games. He didn't experience the CDI games specifically but he knew the Zelda games from around that era.

And I think it started after the movie in my personal opinion. I think he still had some good stuff post-100 but I think only one episode stands out to me past the movie.
