Borderlands: the pre-sequel

Its not the worst game objectively obviously as it does certain things well enough, but overall a game has never made me feel so fucking bored and so goddamn depressed. I kept playing it for some time in hopes of it getting better, but it never did.
Its so mindnumbing. Maybe I was already tired with the borderlands games and this being so flat and lifeless on its own, probably made for a very bad combo. I feel like I want to die when I even think about that game. Im not even joking, I literally want to kill myself whenever I think of that piece of shit. I spent 40euros on it too. What was I thinking.

All Aspect Warfare, I bought it before steam reviews existed without looking up reviews and couldn't figure out what the fuck it was. Everything I read about it in game and on the store page sounded like an epic game, yet no buttons worked and I was left a more cynical and money smart person afterwords.

This was when I was like 14, and to this day I keep it in my Library, a solemn reminder of what happens when you buy without thinking.

Don't hate the games but while I did like the first Prime, the gameplay was slow & samus jump height was low. The platforming was also terrible, it also didn't help that none of Samus weapons or abilities either looked or worked like they did in the 2D games. But I still enjoyed the first Prime for what it was, Prime 2, & especially 3, & Hunters put too much focus on FPS combat the worst aspect of Prime thus some of the actual Metroid experience is lost.

White Knight Chronicles is pretty high up there. Utterly braindead combat where you can create "combos" but it doesn't matter what you actually do because everything pretty much has the same result, shitty story full of retarded characters where your actual created character just stands in the background looking like an autist the entire time, focus on grindy and repetitive online quests, and basically no redeeming qualities at all. I bought it because pretty much every game Level 5 did on PS2 was great, and all I could think about was "what the fuck happened?"

The other one would be Frogger: The Great Quest. Because of, well, everything. It's a really bad 3D platformer that happens to have the Frogger name tacked onto it, it's buggy and ugly to look at with a fucked-up camera, the level design and platforming sucks, half the game is essentially busywork, the writing is cringeworthy even to a kid, and pretty much nothing about it works right or is any fun.

I haven't played any literally terrible games, but the worst I've played is probably Torchlight. It's a shameless gear treadmill with a boring unoriginal setting set to repetitive music and a bad story thrown on top. Gameplay on all difficulties is to spam one skill - all others are irrelevant - and stack both Vitality and your class-respective damage stat, and pop a potion if things get hairy.

Torchlight 2 actually took its setting at least slightly seriously, and the writing improved beyond "whoa you're infected, better get a move-on pardner," and the idea of the classes from the first game being major characters in the second was neat. It was also prettier. But the one-skill-to-win was still there, and the treadmill was worse than ever - endgame was running dungeons for your desired gear over and over, padded out by insultingly high vendor prices and punishing enchanter RNG.

Is there a single ARPG out there that's actually fulfilling or is Torchlight a textbook example?

And it's still p2w since buying a shitton of packs will inevitably give you cards that are strong in current and coming versions. Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works ends on a deceptively high note. I'm tempted to recommend stopping at episode 13 and jumping straight to this epilogue. All of the lightheartedness that makes the clumsy plotting palatable in the early going vanishes as soon as the second half starts. It quickly becomes clear that the show has no idea what to do with characters other than Shirou and Archer – a serious problem when there's a cast of two dozen and thirteen episodes to fill out. This one dramatic conflict was diluted far past the point of engaging storytelling.

At the same time, the production took a hit in this second half. The first half's thrilling fight choreography largely vanishes and we're left with characters launching particle effects and beam spam at each other. The set pieces became more drab (Unlimited Blade Works in particular was used to death), and the show takes on an exhausted tone. It's also ambivalent in its relationship to other installments in the Type-Mooniverse. It alternately relies upon and then denies a relationship to its prequel series Fate/Zero, creating a paradoxical experience. When it's adapted near-verbatim from the middle route of the visual novel, too many important moments rely on familiarity with the other routes.

All in all, I had high hopes for FSN:UBW in the beginning, but they proved unrealistic. This show just wasn't properly adapted into a standalone narrative, neither as a sequel to Fate/Zero or as a story that could be enjoyed independently. Courting so many demographics with different expectations for the franchise only turned it into a misshapen adaptive chimera. On a deeper level, Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works is likely to satisfy only the most dedicated of Type-Moon fans who are able to digest all its contradictory adaptive choices à la carte as reflections of the full Mooniverse.

In all seriousness, I've finally decided to address something that I've alluded to before but never outlined in-depth: why Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works is 100% about masculinity and not just "ideals." I'll get to the brass tacks of episode 20's content shortly, but because this episode and the ones preceding it are so heavily focused on the writer's philosophical musings, I think it's important to put that stuff into context first, and to explain why it didn't work for me.

Rather than being about heroic ideals in broad, Shirou's story is about a “beta male” confronting various toxic images of idealized “alpha masculinity” (Archer, Gilgamesh, and Kirei) and rejecting them to become comfortable with himself as he truly is. I will explain these terms in more detail to fully clarify what I mean, and I do understand why people are attached to this story, but it's honestly not a comprehensive examination of idealism versus reality. It's certainly trying to be and easily could have been, but the story's baggage over gender is too heavy for me to read it as applicable to the world outside Kinoko Nasu's head. Stories about idealism should pit the ideal against the real world, but FSN:UBW fails to make its world recognizable enough to be relevant. This isn't going to be a nice review, but I'm not going out of my way to “target” anything but the work itself. This is what the story says, as I've been able to interpret it through now multiple versions. I can no longer refrain from articulating these ideas and confronting them as FSN:UBW goes downhill.

It consistently undermines the common, self-serving ways in which men preoccupied with heroism use women to try and give their beliefs context. Kariya views women as objects to be saved, Kiritsugu views them as objects of sacrifice, and Kirei as pawns or agents of failed salvation (through his disastrous marriage).
