It was too easy and the Landmaster stages sucked.

I never felt very excited during it, but that's a personal problem.

I grew on up the original Star Fox though, and was always disappointed by 64.

Not him, but on-rails shooters were uninteresting to me even at that time. Once you have a taste of full, unobstructed flight, you can't really go back.

Why would I play something on-rails in 1997 when I had already been playing Descent, X-Wing, and TIE Fighter - all of which allowed for full 6DoF movement in 1995 and earlier?

Shit I'm gonna pop this in my 3DS and play through it. What ever happened to rail shooters, I know they ain't the most popular series but you'd think someone would put out one or two a year.
>>
>>323457959
But I like bullet-hell shmups.

The problem with Star Fox is that it presents itself in a way that is close to a flight sim, and makes you really want full, unobstructed flight - but it takes it away from you. That restriction makes the game feel lacking.

Bullet-hell shmups don't try to do this at all. They don't try to give the player the illusion of immersive flight; but rather, they are going for something completely different.

But it's not even a rail shooter, what the fuck. You can literally move around during the levels.

A rail shooter would mean you cannot move at all.
>>
>>323458901
So you don't know what on-rails means and think Starfox is meant to be a flight simulator (lol)? Ok.
>>
Aquas, Venom 2 and Solar exist
>>
>>323459013
Are you retarded? Your forced to go in a predetermined path toward, sometimes you have a option to change which way you move forward much like train in rails. Hence its a rails shooter

>>
>>323459262
Shut your whore mouth, Solar was cash as fuck. Aquas was a crime against humanity though, and Venom 2 was just a let down. That Wolf fight should have come after a deluxe version of Venom 1. /spoiler]
>>
>>323459453
On-rails shooter = vehicle/character follows an exact path. All you control in an on-rails shooter is the crosshair. Examples are House of the Dead, Knife Edge.
Starfox gives you 4 degrees of freedom and speed/slow options. It's not on-rails at all.
>>

move left, hit invisible wall

But you can still move a bit, which makes it NOT a rails shooter.

I'm not saying it's meant to be a space sim, nor that it is even trying to give the illusion that it is - I'm saying that a player who had already been exposed to space sims would sit down, try Star Fox, and find the freedom to be lacking.

In other words, it's not trying to be a space sim, but it makes a player who has experienced full 6D0F want it to be a space sim.
>>
>>323459769
>constant damage unless you fly super high
>only one time of enemy you have to shoot multiple times to down them to shoot at besides stupid fire rocks
>team is totally useless and just takes unnecessary damage making things harder at Area 6/Boise if you don't get a really good score on MacBeth.

The boss and idea of Solar was great but the execution was shit. Totally agree on Venom 2, Venom 1 is so good I often go that way instead of Area 6 since Venom 2 is shit you can gimp and be over with in 10 seconds

Getting a medal on Sector Z is frustratingly hard, as your teammates destroy some of the missiles for you (if you're not quick enough), robbing you of precious points needed to attain said medal.

>can't save mid-game
>can't do one level at a time
that's about it. Fortunately, the 3DS version fixed both of those.

Now, if we could just get a proper sequel, that doesn't fuck with the formula at all but expands on the amount of content like pic related. I have no faith Zero will do this, I think Zero will be linear 9 planets done.
>>
>>323460175
Expect you can backtrack in Mario now and your not being FORCED to move forward aside a few side scrolling levels.

In Star Fox you are FORCED to move forward at all times, your mobility is limited to four directions but at all times you are moving forward on a pre set path. Fuck off you shitposting retard

They don't know what a rail shooter is, all they need to do is go look up the term
>>
>>323460581
Please tell me your official, cited definition of "on-rails," then.

You know that most on-rails shooters do allow the player to move a bit within some range? On-rails means that he is corralled in some general direction, but may be allowed to move/look about within some range.

Even many arcade lightgun games allowed this.
>>
>>323461716
>not forced to move
Yes you are, if the timer hits 0 you lose a life.
>>
>>323461716
Doesn't matter. Rail shooter means the ONLY movement is LITERALLY moving forwards and backwards. As long as you can move even SLIGHTLY more than that, it's not a rail shooter.
>>
>>323461953
>Rail shooter means the ONLY movement is LITERALLY moving forwards and backwards.
Hardly any video games do this - and even most of the arcade lightgun games (all of which were called "on-rails") were less restrictive than this.
>>
>>323461953
http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/29295/what-does-the-term-rail-shooter-mean
>>
>>323462204
Then they're not rail shooters. Wtf's so hard to understand about this??
>>
>>323462469
Give me some examples of on-rail shooters by your definition, then.
>>
>>323462204
Mate have you ever seen something actually on rails, like a train?
>>
>people think on rails literally mean having to be on rails
>>
>>323462613
Right, a video game where you control a turret from a train would be on-rails.

But, imagine you are a gunman on a flat bed of a train, free to move around (but, of course, restricted to the bed). That, by every single definition of "on-rails" I have seen when applied to video games, would also be considered "on-rails."
>>
>>323463109
That's not on rails that's a shoot 'em up.
>>
>>323461916
Your really are a retard aren't you?
You have the choice to let the timer go out to zero if you want, hell you can walk the whole way to the goal if you wanted really slow its up to you. You can't in 64 you move at a set speed that you have little control over.
>inb4 I was only pretending!

Find me a better source that supports your retarded, extremely restrictive definition of "on-rails," and maybe you have a (still retarded, but at least supported) point.

>>323465393
If the specific beat-em-up game forces the player forward in some fashion (e.g. a scrolling screen that the player has minimal control over), then I don't see why we couldn't say that that specific beat-em-up was "on-rails."

Most beat-em-ups don't do this, though. They either let the player clear the rooms at their leisure, or allow him to control the scrolling of the screen himself as he moves through the level. Also, the term "on-rails" is usually applied to shooters or dodge-em-ups.

>And you have the 'choice' to switch off the console.
How on earth does that support your idiotic, rigid definition of "on-rails?"

All games have choices. Some moreso than others. On-rails shooters are an interesting example of this, because they are very much about giving the illusion that the player has more freedom in the game than he actually does (in the early days, this was done to save assets, especially in arcades, in order to allow for more detailed graphics - they were literally movie games of their time).

Assault was overall very bad but the music produced for it was 10/10. The music alone deserves a better, current gen HD game.

Haven't even touched

Even stuff like Zoness, although I'd prefer an actual orchestral recording to the original N64 track, which by itself was still quite thrilling in conjunction with skimming the infinite ocean.
