Well it doesn't.

Even Nomura said it was stupid in hindsight.
OK, so why is it a GUNblade? They load it with some sort of ammunition, then pull the trigger to "do more damage." Problem one, how? Any kind of gas emission would fuck something up. Blowing back would scorch your hands, blowing forward would jerk the blade up. Vibration is stupid, try cutting a steak while spazzing your hand out.
Problem two, the blade. It might not be so bad if it was shorter, but with the offset handle and the unorhtodox grip required to use the trigger, you would fuck your arm up. Take a butcher knife, ducttape a plank of wood on the end, then hold it like you're slicing something on a plate and try swinging that bad boy. You just destroyed your wrist.
Problem three, the look. It looks fucking stupid. The rule of cool only works if it's cool, like a tiger on a robots chest. This is a combination of a stupid looking gun and a stupid looking sword, with one of those stupid looking wallet chains that kid always had.
FF8 has some stupid designs, but the gundblade takes the cake.
