>>323409470 No fuck you, FUCK YOU. That game lied to me. It said it was a fucking Wizard game but it was just a corridor shooter with bullets that look like fireballs. Fuck that game. I was so excited to be a Wizard.
>>323409028 >>323409248 There is only one other that I can think of, but knowing how most of /v/ have probably never seen an actual roguelike, it probably won't be for most. DCSS. A shame the nofunallowed dev team made it so you can't take every army you raise from corpsescape to corpsescape down with you to the next floor.
>>323409716 Because it's fucking boring. There's no micro play outside of casting debuffs, and true necromancy (where you have a shit-ton of dudes) is like playing WC3, and RTS's need a huge backing to be successful. D2 is great because theres a whole support game behind it with interesting enemies, creatures, loot, etc. It's just not interesting enough, gameplay wise, for a whole game
>>323410673 You want crazy overpwered necromancy? You want raise skeletons? You want to speed up time so everyone dies of old age so you can raise them as skeletons? You want summon one man army eaters of the dead that can only be killed by breaking the game?
>>323410478 Good points, it still boggles me though that any post diablo 2 game in which a necromancer is available as a class or player choice, the developer just never seemed to want to go whole hog with massed dead guy summoning and only ever allows a handful of summoned allies.
It's like everyone collectively decided "whoa, guys. that was way too many skeletons on the screen at once. almost caused y2k. never again.".
>>323410891 guildwars 1 had literally necro armies as it's pve meta standard for speed clearing, they even had an elite skill that buffs your attribute points while raising all dead bodies as minions within your vicinity
>>323411462 But bro, the whole point of a bunch of goofball skeletons is they can handle your business and balance your checkbook and get slain by righteous fire while you do other stuff like use your death magic to fuck people up or make more skeletons to go get your groceries as well.
My bottom line is watching a billion skeletons dick around on the screen is fun to me. You could always summon bigger more powerful and resilient or special dudes in exchange for summoning weaker flimsy skeleton losers. I just like having the option to make a billion loser skeletons. Why deny me this unholy right?
>tfw no necromancer game that lets me build a comfy domain to practice in The closest is modded Elder Scrolls, but it still feels lacking and the game usually slows down when you have a comfy gloomy cottage filled with tons of ingredients and skulls.
>>323412897 >Warlocks Would be nice if games didn't just treat them as mages: edgy edition. In literally 90% of all games they're just mages with edgy named and different colored fire balls, with a dash of dots.
>>323413130 this wanting a succubus slag to suck out your life force and eternally damn you, then move on to the next poor schmuck or building your own perfect frankenwaifu qt who will love only you and help you attain undeath so you can be together forever as liches
>>323413476 The chance of getting a really good player with me in RA made it worth it to burn entire days of playtime doing it, I of course was too shit to carry a team so it was fun watching pros do all the work while I won about 50% of my games
>>323413313 >friends on the other side >demons >friends, with anyone, ever >even other demons
>Necromancers rarely come with the ultra destructive fuck you powers warlocks get. someone never read the books about mannimarco and galerion's war >storms of death, poisonous fogs, soul sucking tornadoes, plagues of undeath spreading from village to village, invincible tides of flesh and bone sweeping across the land as armies of necromancers fling death bolts from the back like unholy artillery
>>323413790 well yah, the risk is dying or not having control over your creations or your disease powers backfiring maybe fucking with a ghost when your willpower isnt strong enough to resist it
hell, the entire point of lichdom is that youre killing yourself, in the hopes you happened to get the process just right and you know, come back from dying warlocks just consort with demons necromancy always ends in your death
>>323414170 Everything ends in death, sans being a god. Necromancy is an attempt to circumvent it, and generally has a better return on their investment than selling their soul. Either way paladins hate them, may as well go the route that can circumvent death in some way.
>>323415214 Admittedly I didn't make it that far in, but it was enough to form an opinion. Each spell basically just mimicked a gun type in a modern shooter. There was the machine gun spell, the shotgun spell, the pistol spell. I think there might have been some chain lightning spell but that's about as creative as I saw. It just felt identical to a fucking corridor shooter.
>>323415386 This Necromancers probably need to deal with a lot more shit in life. I mean you're surrounded by smelly ass corpses, zombies if you're a pleb and don't prefer skeletons, probably ghosts wailing you awake every night. If you're just starting up you're going to get some kind of disease and not be able to corpse it away for a few years. Not to mention you actually need to gather corpses and shit. Villagers are going to run you out eventually. Warlocks? They really only need to deal with their stuff when they want to, until you become powerful enough then you're probably getting some horrible Guts style nightmares and such. Still, not as bad. Also your materials are mostly going to come from other magical beings or just blood, which you're literally full of. You aren't getting run out or burnt at the stake unless you're real sloppy, or REAL greedy.
Necros get sweet ass Lichdom in death, and Warlocks get their soul burnt for eternity though.
wut Also Warlocks are granted power through deals with far more powerful beings. Necros just manipulate dark energy and probably aren't going to tread on the turf of any gods or demons. A Warlock could potentially become a demon himself but he's going to need some real powerful mojo and some dirt on a real big name in hell to make it happen, and even then they're probably going to get monkey's pawed or just fucked in general.
>>323415774 >probably aren't going to tread on the turf of any gods Except for all those gods who probably like dead things remaining dead. plenty of settings where good, neutral, and even some evil gods prefer things that way.
>>323415859 I originally wrote toes then I erased it and wrote turf. Of course the gods aren't going to like what you're doing but that comes with the territory. Hell some gods probably aren't going to like just basic arcanery. Stepping in their territory though? Now you're fucked. It's the difference between calling someone a meme loving faggot here and to their face. Warlocks are all over that shit.
Both are rad as fuck, just saying Warlocks are definitely more risky. I'm not even the anon that started this with you.
>>323415814 I liked the way the Exile/Avernum series handled lichdom best.
Most liches you meet fall into two categories (with one exception in the first game): mega egotistical cunts and eldritch abominations.
The former is generally the result of a mage deciding to keep living and fuck the police, and its implied you have to be pretty sociopathic to go that route, since while the really strong mages don't die until they decide they want to, it's immensely physically painful for them to force their magic to keep them alive, and eventually results in lichdom anyways if they do it long enough, so the good guys usually just let go. The bad guys don't.
The latter is what happens when one of the mega cunts lasts long enough and continues to accumulate magic knowledge and power.
>>323415440 A warlock isn't trying to become a demon, they make pacts with demons for power. Also, demons generally dislike humans, or at least being under one's command. They aren't gonna just up and turn one into a demon.
Also >Necromancer >Demon I think you're getting your dark arts confused.
>>323416126 Warlock is by far the cooler choice of the two, it's metal as fuck, but practically speaking, Necromancy has the better dealio. As for gods, in most settings involving them, they get pissed off at anything outside of peasantry. A necromancer and warlock would both have to deal with religious sects and stuff, and a necromancer might have to deal with mystical beings of balance, such as druids and shit, but a warlock is commanding literal abominations to the mortal world. Pretty sure they would get more hate.
>>323409667 >It said it was a fucking Wizard game but it was just a corridor shooter with bullets that look like fireballs. What the fuck were you expecting? What is a Wizard game to you? Magic has always been fire or lightning bullets/bombs.
Would you have preferred if they gave you Dominate or Black Tentacles or something so you could walk up and slit their throats/hide behind something while the tentacles go fuck shit up? Would you have preferred summoning a bunch of monsters to fight for you?
I think you just don't like blaster wizards, which are still wizards.
>>323416532 Well it depends on what we're talking about here. Like, if you were to live out the rest of your life right now as one or the other the Warlock is probably the better choice. Their magic is a lot more flexible and could be used more practically. Hot demon rimjobs Succubi can't suck your soul out through your anus people, remember! imps and flesh mounds to go fetch you shit. Summon a damn Balrog to carry your throne, the whole dealio. Now Necromancer is probably a lot cooler if you're going to go into a world of magic. Conquering towns/cities/nations with vast armies of undead is a lot easier and more fun than having a few much more powerful demons on hand. Numbers and all that. Again though the Warlock is probably a lot happier in their downtime, at least before Lichdom occurs.
You gotta think though, in order for those forces to oppose you they need to realize you're there first. I'm saying a Necromancer needs to gather corpses, transport them, then store them. Warlocks just need blood and bones and shit. A lot stealthier until you start converting people to help with your summoning.
>>323417398 Sometimes it feels as if i'm the only person who never wanted their necromancer to rule the world
>Make a necromancer who wanted to help fight an evil god >Was evil herself - perhaps more selfish than anything outright evil >Even the paladin didn't mind the undead around when I eventually raised dead. Paladin was probably my biggest friend despite the sometimes debates.
She just wanted to do the job, retire, and maybe rule a small town, and chill out after it was all over. She was rather easy to placate.
I feel you OP >play DFO >"oh SHIT a necromancer class!" >summoner flooding floors with elemental minions and shit already exist but what the hell >promote to necromancer >her only good skill is summoning a vampire, he has all the good shit >level some more >bitch barely gets worthwhile zombies >eventually she gets a fucking stand I expected killing things instead of constantly eating MP to summon things but no, I got jojo with my vampire boyfriend.
>>323417963 First it's 'we need this lesser evil to defeat this bigger evil' Then it's 'this lesser evil was pretty useful maybe we keep it around in case bigger evil arrives' Then it's 'this lesser necromancy is not so bad, actually, I mean they were already dead' Then it's 'okay he killed that village to reanimate their corpses, but it's for the greater good!' Do not go down the slippery slope Purge evil
>>323418357 Because in order to handle the scale of necromancy's power to be awesome is the same as much magic, all it comes down to is summoning a small paltry party of minions and debuffs/dots/lifesiphon magic. Just like how many magics just come down to different flavors of fireball. Would you like your magic missile served on ice or with lightning?
It's just dumbing down for convenience in video games. If you want something awesome you would have to do so in an unlimited medium, your own creativity basically. You could make skeletons assist with local crops or make it as simple as having people's ancestors on speed dial from the realms of the dead.
I'm actually rolling an idea around in my head for that where a young man gets married but his wife dies right off the bat so he has to put up with her for the rest of his life. Small dabblings in necromancy would be a normal part of everyday life rather than on a massive scale.
