There's no micro play outside of casting debuffs, and true necromancy (where you have a shit-ton of dudes) is like playing WC3, and RTS's need a huge backing to be successful. There was the machine gun spell, the shotgun spell, the pistol spell. I think there might have been some chain lightning spell but that's about as creative as I saw. You aren't getting run out or burnt at the stake unless you're real sloppy, or REAL greedy.
Necros get sweet ass Lichdom in death, and Warlocks get their soul burnt for eternity though.
wut Also Warlocks are granted power through deals with far more powerful beings. Necros just manipulate dark energy and probably aren't going to tread on the turf of any gods or demons. A Warlock could potentially become a demon himself but he's going to need some real powerful mojo and some dirt on a real big name in hell to make it happen, and even then they're probably going to get monkey's pawed or just fucked in general.

Most liches you meet fall into two categories (with one exception in the first game): mega egotistical cunts and eldritch abominations.
The former is generally the result of a mage deciding to keep living and fuck the police, and its implied you have to be pretty sociopathic to go that route, since while the really strong mages don't die until they decide they want to, it's immensely physically painful for them to force their magic to keep them alive, and eventually results in lichdom anyways if they do it long enough, so the good guys usually just let go. The bad guys don't.
The latter is what happens when one of the mega cunts lasts long enough and continues to accumulate magic knowledge and power.

Their magic is a lot more flexible and could be used more practically. Again though the Warlock is probably a lot happier in their downtime, at least before Lichdom occurs.
You gotta think though, in order for those forces to oppose you they need to realize you're there first. I'm saying a Necromancer needs to gather corpses, transport them, then store them. Warlocks just need blood and bones and shit. A lot stealthier until you start converting people to help with your summoning.

It's just dumbing down for convenience in video games. If you want something awesome you would have to do so in an unlimited medium, your own creativity basically. You could make skeletons assist with local crops or make it as simple as having people's ancestors on speed dial from the realms of the dead.
I'm actually rolling an idea around in my head for that where a young man gets married but his wife dies right off the bat so he has to put up with her for the rest of his life. Small dabblings in necromancy would be a normal part of everyday life rather than on a massive scale.
