Any reason why the majority of /v/ doesn't like this game?
It's just not very good, to be honest. Fills the same niche as Touhou or roguelikes - if you spend hundreds of hours, you could develop the skills to make a decent Vine clip or YouTube video.
And that's about it.
I play it if I'm too lazy to break out my IIDX or SDVX controllers. It's simply a fun lightweight rhythm game.
Just got to around rank 6,700 in mania.
Speaking of which, does anyone wanna play some mania? I can make a 4k or 7k rooms your choice. :^)
What happened? did the game possess him?
it prioritizes combos over accuracy. but it's too late to change it now and reset all the scoreboards.
also not enough good osumania maps. barely any 8k maps, most 7k maps are mapped horribly with stupid sliders everywhere and 4k is just retard mode
Booted it up a week ago, haven't played 7k since O2Jam/Mania like 10 years ago or something, and 4k for 6 so since Stepmania, both of which when I was young and bad.
Just hit 50k, struggling on 2.5star 7k so I went back and grinded out some 2.5star 4k for some free pp, shit feels bad but gotta do what you gotta do I guess.
Games fun but improving is tough, my 7k has barely gone from 2star (A/B's) to 2.5star (for B/C's) in a week.
If we're talking mania at least.. Combo's actually reward fuck all, it's all about the solid hits. You can miss a note right in the middle of the song but still score better than someone who missed none if your timing of the rest of the hits is good.
don't take it personally anon, i was just expressing my frustration as an IIDX player
Lost my momentum after the first couple of months and went back after a hueg break, thought it was a bit shit at that point and haven't been able to stick with it since.
No idea why I enjoyed it so much to start with, Audiosurf & Beathazard are better music games and neither depend on the community for non-shit maps.
I think osu! is kind of fun, but the song selection is pretty shabby. I mean, I'm a weeb and all, but the song selection is waaaay too weeb. There's a few fun songs from VNs I was able to play like Gentle Jena from Planetarian, but everything else varied in terms of enjoyment. I tend to think anime OPs and EDs are not the greatest.
I just don't care anymore because:
>need a tablet to play the PC version
>loading tracks into the mobile version takes up as much space as an actual music library
>user-created content is almost all miku or anime music
>only good track with any effort was the Phoenix Wright one
Yeah I can agree with this, especially for Mania which doesn't have a huge map selection as well.
I've cycled through as many non weab songs that I can but you're going to have to have a fair few, or even some shitty converts if you're desperate. O2Jam had a lot of weab as well but I was less self conscious playing those through my speakers, and had a lot of fun gimmicks with the speed up/slow down.
Is Osu!Mania the best Mania like game at the moment? O2Mania feels like shit now, IIDX control scheme is a little different and I'm not well versed in those communities either. I also just spent hours tweaking my skin's to feel perfect as well but the map list is a huge downer for me.
>Picking weeb music.
In all honesty, it isn't hard to find non weeb music in the catalog
>I need a tablet to git gud
But the majority of ranked maps
in maniaare from Bemani games.
Jesus christ so many SDVX beatmaps.
I made a 4k/7k mania room if you guys want to see non-anime songs. It's going to mostly be songs from IIDX, SDVX and the like though.
room - /v/ weeb games
pass - rage
Troll all you want, but I'm not going to repeat shit for hours just to overcome a suboptimal interface.
I wouldn't play an FPS with a controller. Why would I play a touch game with a mouse?
>I wouldn't play an FPS with a controller
If all you have is a computer, why not just pirate DJ Max Trilogy and play that instead? Unlockables for days, 100+ songs you'll probably recognise some of from osu! and it's fleshed out like a proper game instead of a half arsed side-mode.
>only good track with any effort was the Phoenix Wright one
I remember that, actually felt like EBA. Probably got a load of /v/irgins into the game too considering the threads about it.
Holy shit this has got to be bullshit
This can't be fucking real
People playing dark souls on a guitar controller now on suicide watch
>>need a tablet to play the PC version
A good optical mouse should be sufficient. A tablet might feel more intuitive at first, but it doesn't take long to get used to a mouse. Not nearly as long as it takes to get good with either device.
Anime or not, that song is pretty shit.
Great map, though.
Honestly though, I think it's unfair to judge osu based on its song list. A lot of people avoid the game because it's mostly weeb trash, but then who's left to continue making maps? The people who actually enjoy that shit.
>80% of the maps are nightcore
>10% of the maps are shitty pop music
>5% of the maps are "GUYS LOOK HOW HARD THIS IS ISN'T IT HARD XDXD"
>4% of the maps are songs i like but with abysmal mapping
>1% of the maps are good maps with songs i like
i'll stick with something where the quality is reliable thank you
Have you played it?
It's obviously designed for a touchscreen device
leftclick-and-drag is not my idea of fun.
You literally have to memorize on the higher difficulties because it starts going too fast to react to.
Too much weebshit and the choice of gameplay is kinda dumb to me. I wish Soundodger blew up like osu did instead.
>making for a good video
Roguelikes are a challenge between man and machine, it's fun to watch for nobody, unless you like staring at ASCII and numbers for dozens of hours
sorry bud, I only play the regular game. I tried to get into taiko multiple times but i suck ass and I'm just straight up fucking TERRIBLE at mania.
osu is more than fine on m+kb friend, I'm by no means a god or anything but I can beat songs like airman on my m+kb setup so I don't feel that disadvantaged
I'll pick both, people that don't look past anime aesthetics for their vidya are casual by nature.
Meh, I've been playing OSU since 2011 and drop it like twice a year.
It's more fun to play Taiko anyway.
I'll never understand this notion.. You can pick up and play hard songs for the first time as a mania player and do extremely well. You don't just sit there and take it note by note for days until you can do it with your eyes closed, that's some retardo shit.
I do too, um I wish there were more non /a/-type songs on there.
I main Taiko by the way and still get raped by anything 3.5 or higher, even after 6+ years of playing off and on.
Some people like to SS their songs and to do that you don't really have a lot of fun (I don't). It's like you are playing this song, and you do bad in X part so you keep playing the same shitty song over and over until you get good at that part and then you SS the song and you don't really feel like you accomplished anything.
Okay kid. Go play nightcore songs for me, kay?
99% of all people that complain about the songs in osu! haven't even fucking opened the beatmap editor once in their life. Be the positive change you want to see in this world, or fuck off and shitpost elsewhere.
I think anyone says a game like osu (i.e. any game with virtually no skill ceiling because the difficulty continuously ramps up as the playerbase gets better at the game) takes no skill has no idea what they're talking about.
Funny enough I purposefully avoid nightcore songs. Why do you have to bring up irrelevant shit to the discussion? You're shit at osu! sorry buddy ol' pal. Maybe if you weren't an utter shit player I'd take you seriously, but I doubt you can even complete freedom dive
Just type "djmax" in piratebay, it'll be the only one that's seeded.
Heads up though, follow the readme and when you change the language in the launcher, change the resolution to yours too. Not doing so will give you a BSOD
I understand the S/SSing stuff, which is pretty boring. Been doing it recently for the PP farm as getting C's and trying to get better doesn't have as much as an e-peen reward.
>mfw the majority of popular beatmaps come from Bemani
>Some people like to SS their songs and to do that you don't really have a lot of fun (I don't). It's like you are playing this song, and you do bad in X part so you keep playing the same shitty song over and over until you get good at that part and then you SS the song and you don't really feel like you accomplished anything.
Not him, but, this goes for pretty much every music game out there. Perfecting a song takes lots of concentration, memorization, and just plain being in the right mood in the right place at the right time. It's tedious as fuck, and some people love that.
Besides, there's not really any set goal when playing a music game. Some people like to perfect their favorite songs. Some people like to compete for high scores. Some people like to challenge themselves and try to beat the hardest songs they have a chance at.
>I've been receiving emails from some users that their toaster shows up as a wireless blender. This can be fixed by rebooting
The only reason the song list is so shit is because people can't be bothered to clean it up by making good maps of their own.
That's the one big problem with osu, that making good maps usually takes a LOT more time and effort than other games, especially if you want a storyboard to go with it.
I love Rhythm games but I wish there was somehow a way to make them more 'multiplayer'.
I'm a huge nut for competitive games, quake, starcraft, fighters, and I've done my fair share of speedrunning and rhythm games, but with those last ones, sometimes it'd be nice to challenge someone and interact with them rather than grinding over and over for that perfect time (Which can still be great as well, solo stuff is relaxing, but sometimes you wanna fuck someone up in the process with the skills from that game).
I've never played Osu, but it seems like it's just EBA/Ouendan. EBA/Ouendan while fun are pretty trash rhythm games because they prioritize combos over accuracy.
>Don't miss anything through the entire song
>Fuck up right before a part where notes become sparse
>Meter is dropping at the speed of sound
>Even if you get everything right after fucking up, there can either be not enough notes or they don't come fast enough to let you recover in time
>Lose the song because you fucked up literally once right before a badly designed section
Yeah, the amount of petty bullshit mappers have to put up with because the ranking team is super autistic is insane. Its honestly not surprising that its mostly weeb shit because a weeb is the only person I would expect to be that devoted to making a good map.
And I appreciate it because theres a lot of fun challenging maps in osu!. I have my fair share of distaste for certain stuff, I despise nightcore for example, but I don't get all huffity about people making nightcore maps.
Its beautiful to see people actually having fun with there games, and here i am on 4chan seeing these cucks hate games.
Don't you people enjoy 4chan just as much? It's been years but I still post with glee and regularly giggle/outright howl at anon's funposting.
I can read AR10 just fine. However, because of people like you that only prefers really high AR, there are barely any difficult AR7-AR8 maps ranked anymore because "aaaa cant read this asdasfa".
Approach Rate aka how fast circles are popping out.
Once you get really really good at osu playing slow maps just isn't fun, what do you want? Theres still plenty of easy low AR maps. Go check the most recent ranked page right now and come back here again and try to tell me theres only AR9+ maps.
>Combo-based scoring instead of accuracy
>Beatmappers spending enormous amounts of time creating maps and getting no monetary reward
The only thing the game ever did right is the core gameplay. That shit is fun.
im going through each song on the ranked page and every single one with more than 4 difficulties has at least an ar8 or ar7 map. Quit making shit up. Stop being lazy and actually search for maps.
Reminder that if you haven't played through at least two-thirds of those 90s boyband songs with old ass beatmaps, you don't know shit about osu!
>for 1600yen a month
Download the arcade games for free.
kgf 2016 is on and I'm fucking going for it lads, I'm not failing another year.
https://accessbay.co/ for one, you might be able to pick it up on nyaa.se too
Thank you, anon. Have a wallaper.
Yeah I do them, it's mostly just overuse. I fucked my hands doing 8 hours a day of Melee for weeks to the point where I couldn't click a mouse without pain and had sharp pains up my forearm. Since then I've been careful and rest them in braces and such somewhat often if any soft pains come in (even aches from holding things for long periods), but it's just the fact that everything I do revolves around hand/wrist usage and I do them for long periods as well as I'm not interested in much else.
if I don't develop arthritis or RSI soon I'll be surprised as I've been gaming/typing super frequently for years as I've worked as a programmer as well.
I've had severe RSI for a couple years now, once you develop it it's very hard to get rid of.
I've just decided to play through the pain and not worry about the permanent damage, I've basically lost all strength in one of my hands and my nerves are damaged in my other one.
I just want to improve. Don't care about rank or anything else.
But anon, E-peen, you need to be higher on the ladder than others. That MEANS you're better than them.
Plus once you get to a point where getting better takes longer, going back and farming S's on 4-6k can be a nice change of pace.
What the fuck is wrong with the timing in this fucking game? In any other game I could FC these stupid charts, but I miss 80% in this game.
>people like to play songs written for a rhythm game in a rhythm game
wow big surprise here
>erp/rp in chat
>cancer flung everywhere
Oh and don't forget about that faggot B.A.T who decides to go into chat and whine about how he has cancer than actually finding a cure/do something more productive than going into a video game chat with players who are having a good time and complain when nobody gives a shit.
>high quality videos outright unplayable
>random lag spikes even with everything turned off
Who /toaster/ here?
Just how is this possible? No honestly I am completely stumped.
I mean, the fact he is doing this with a mouse is not really impressive to me, it's actually the fact he is using an extremely high sensitivity coupled with the fact he is clicking with the mouse buttons. How does that work? I stopped clicking in Osu! because every click would automatically move the mouse a little thus making me miss some notes, how can this guy do this?
This looks so damn slow, and why is the video occupying 80% of the screen? I will play while looking at the game, not at the video.
Say what you want about Osu, it's efficient and well polished.
Look at the cursor trail, it does shake a bit when he streams. This is impossible to get rid of completely, I guess you just get used to it or switch to a firmer grip or something.
Yes, thing is, my sensitivity is way smaller than his and it twitches twice or thrice more than his.
This would mean he should be dealing with 10x more twitching, yet he deals with like 3x less twitching.
The skill gap between me and him is so ridiculously high here, damn
I dunno man, go guitar hero mode and let you fuck people up, maybe innovate something new, if I had the ideas we wouldn't be here. If Tetris and Kirby's Avalanche style games can be more multiplayer than chasing scores, so can rhythm games.
Why the fuck do I get 0pp from A'ing 2.2star 7k songs and like 10pp for A/Sing a 2.2star 4k star. 7k is substantially harder and yet seems to be extremely top heavy compared to 4k.
I want to get better but it's annoying watching my rank go nowhere when I'm clearly beating songs I couldn't before, and I could go back and farm 4k songs and boost myself way higher.
BUDDY I wanna get better and get my dick into the high ranks as well. Watching yourself climb ranks BECAUSE you're getting better is a spectacular motivational tool and allows you to get an accurate representation of your skill over time, but right now the Osu!Mania pp system seems skewed as fuck. Getting 0pp for A'ing a 7k song, yet around 8pp for A'ing a song of the same difficulty in 4k is retarded as 4k is muuuuuch easier.
I personally only "don't like it" in the sense that I've never tried it, so I can't like it.
I don't dislike it either.
I've been meaning to give it a spin. Frets on Fire was a great community driven music game, and I'm a big Elite Beat Agents fan, so I should be able to appreciate this.
>Why the fuck do I get 0pp from A'ing 2.2star 7k songs and like 10pp for A/Sing a 2.2star 4k star.
>7k is substantially harder and yet seems to be extremely top heavy compared to 4k.
It is only substantially harder because you have spent substantially less time practicing it.
The pp system in osu is complete garbage as we all know, in mania pp is calculated mostly by the density of the notes, and not by the patterns or other variables. This means that an easy 4k song is usually denser and awards more score than an easy 7k song.
On the other hand, a hard 7k song produces tons more pp than a hard 4k song. 4k players usually wont get much further than 4-5k pp before progress crawls to a halt, while everyone sitting on 6k pp and up play 7k.
Blame peppy, he doesn't give a songle shit about fixing this gamemode, you're better off learning LR2 while you are still fresh and haven't grown accustomed to the awkward hit-timing in osu.
What, with the few amount of maps that are actually ranked for 4k (and mania in general), you hit a peak in rank. The highest rank player who only plays 4k charts is like ~#600
7k players have more higher level charts to get pp from (maniera etc)
Besides, if you're good at 7k you should be good at 4k
Just as an example, I played 4k till I was rank #1200 with about 4,400pp, at that point I started playing 7k, and it took me about 6 months of practice just to start gaining some pp again, but once you get into the 5 star+ songs in 7k you'll be swimming in pp compared to 5 star 4k songs (not to mention that because of there being fewer lanes in 4k, it'll just get exponentially denser as star rating increases, good luck EVER being able to go above 5 star in 4k, there's just jackhammers denser than black holes everywhere you look.
I prefer mania over o2jam and stepmania too.
It has some good things going for it, namely the editor and multiplayer.
Anyway, Lunatic Rave 2 is an iidx/bms clone (lots of notes, hard patterns, few long notes)
You can get lots of assistance in the rhythm thread over at /jp/ if you need HD skins, song packs or whatever
Yeah I'm stuck at like 2.4 star for 7k right now, I can do the songs but not get solid rankings on them, just super frustrating to slowly make progress here yet see no pp gains, yet I can blaze through 2.5star 4k and gain like 150 in a few hours.
It was probably more like 4800pp, nothing great either way, still haven't been able to get back up there though.
Ehhhhhh the big draw to me right now is Mania's rankings and online. It's made getting into it much nicer for me and my friend, I'd hate to get back into solo play like I used to do.. I'll look into it though..
I agree, it's the same reason I've stuck with mania
Sadly there's rarely any 7k rooms up, and they are usually filled with longnote-playing koreans so they aren't very fun to join.
I mostly play bms converts.
Try out some of the lv00 maps, they are maybe a bit difficult for you at the moment but it's great practice once you get up there.
Thanks anon, I'll definitely give it a shot. I also feel the distaste for long notes but I figure I'll need to learn to multitask efficiently enough anyway. Sucks that this has left a slight distaste in my mouth for mania though.. I'll consider LR2 as a practice tool and song variety anyway.
Also Koreans are good at long notes due to O2Jam right? Is O2Jam even possible to play in english/as a foreigner these days? Last time I played was before they removed the international server and I think made it IP locked.
long note walls might be fun if you can follow the patterns, but I can't even read them or understand what sounds they represent so it just doesn't make sense to me
>80% of the maps are nightcore
I will NEVER understand how people can listen to this shit unironically. Seriously, I can see something good in pretty much every genre, but this shit is beyond me.
Ok so not in english lol. I already have O2Mania anyway.
Was just curious if there were any other online mania style games but I guess for foreigners it's Osu! only.
It was my first too and I didn't mind them originally, then I played Stepmania a lot and now I hate them. Too much multitasking in my opinion, but you need to know them to get good..
