I played this the other day after hearing all the hype behind it for years and found it to be rather lackluster. Does it get better further in?

I stopped after I got magic. The game didn't have any interesting mechanics like materia or demon fusing.

The story was mediocre up to that point

To be honest,there is no physical reference to any part of Discworld.
However,the overall feel you get while playing. . . the magic, the fairs,the monsters and even the earthbound&Enlightened ones..all screamed Discworld to my 12yr old mind. In short,the overall aesthetic resembled Discworld
