Depends on what you want. Most do not have Awakening's style of a world map with random skirmishes outside of chapters. You'll only really see that with 8. They also don't have some of the nicer streamlined features, like being able to see the effective range of all enemy units with a single button press.
Marriage and children are only seen in 4, and they're handled much differently.

If you want more interesting map design, higher difficulty, and strategies that don't revolve around bunching everyone up into a block and pushing forward with overpowered support bonuses, you'll likely get a lot of enjoyment out of some of the older games.
I suggest trying out either 7, 8, or 9 first and seeing if you like any of those. 9 has a direct sequel in 10, 7 was the first brought to the west, 8 is the last GBA title and has the world map.

The GBA ones are good starting points and Blazing Sword has many tutorials but I find it pretty generic plus it has a sequel if you end up keen on playing that. My favorites were the Radiant games on GC and Wii, Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn though I wouldn't recommend starting with those ones as they do pose some challenge, considerably more than Awakening.

I'd recommend playing in this order but this is just my opinion:

Blazing Sword > Sacred Stones > Binding Blade (Playing this after BS can be draining) > Path of Radiance > Radiant Dawn > Any of the NES ones > Shadow Dragon (but this is a remake of the first FE so play either the NES or this one)

Speed issues and graphics aside, FE9 is an insanely polished game.

There's like 50 different scene variations for earlygame based on who died. Barely anyone is gonna let someone die earlygame and yet they accounted for the slim chance that Gatrie dies in his join map.

Who is the best unit in the series post-Jugdral but pre-Awakening?

There are a lot of characters that can be argued for it, but there are so many variables.

Seth is the only character who can solo his game with utter ease, and also has perfect availability. Some characters like FE9 Ike can also solo their game, but Seth always does is better and more consistently.

That said, Seth is from a much easier game than, say, Haar, who trivializes any chapter he appears in before Part 4 (which is a complete and utter joke the whole ride through). Taking Haar away from 2-E and most of the 3-2 through 3-E would cause turn losses for the GMs ranging from minor to severe.

One could even argue FE7 Marcus for how incredibly much he contributes to HHM.

FE7 Marcus.

Seth is jesus on wheels but his game isn't all that tough and Franz can do his job too. Marcus is so fucking critical for HHM and is the best unit you have for a long ass time. FE9 is also not too hard except MM, where you could argue Titania is better than Marcus. FE10 has Haar but the part system fucks him over. FE11 has Sedgar, and 12 has Kris. Kris comes close but Marcus is still number 1.

Fire Emblem is truly a nostalgic series for me and it always reminds me of the days I would play with my aunt. Sometimes we played until 11PM, which was a big deal for a 6 year old. She and my uncle were my guardians for sometime. Whenever I think of Fire Emblem, I think of my aunt.

I'm not too keen on the direction the series is going, gameplay and art style. But I just do like the series is going strong. I'm always going to prefer the old games, but I'll still play the new ones.

Having played Nohr I'd rank them: Camilla > Xander > Elise > Leo.

Camilla is one of the first prepromotes you get and will likely be your strongest unit until a few chapters later. Very useful during the end of Chapter 10 (a tough Defend chapter) when she comes in and shit starts to hit the fan. Since her starting class is Revenant Knight it's easy to pick up good skills and end the game on a better class without wasting tons of Seals.

Xander's laser sword is straight up broken but he has Speed issues keeping him from beating out Camilla. Whenever I chose to pair him up with someone who gives +Speed he destroyed everything except for Ninjas.

Elise is a Staff user and comes in handy during that hellish Chapter 10 with Freeze, and can cheese several chapters with Draw and that Hoshido Rescue Staff. Later on when she's promoted she hits very hard due to having ridiculous Magic and Speed.

Leo can't take hits as well and often gets doubled so he needs to be babysat by someone who pairs up for +Speed. He also has issues picking up good Skills, his available classes are not the greatest. His saving grace is how hard he hits with his personal tree Tome.

This. I can understand in game models, but I wish the actual art put the characters in their regular attire. Marth is the only one that looks normal. I do like the Sm4sh design a lot as well, although those weird bellbottom pant things always draw my eye. And yeah, Seliph was one of the bad ones for sure. It wouldn't look quite so horrible if you just got rid of that overcoat in its entirety. If they had patched the game, halving the pair up boosts from support ranks, removed the ones for 10/20/30 in a stat and nerfed Nosferatu. I think people would see how good the map designs actually were if they weren't throwing a pair of OP characters into the middle of enemies if they are atleast good enough at the game to win without resorting to that;

Also It wouldn't even make any sense even if it did, Waifu games sell like 30k. Whereas Awakening sold 2 million and it wasn't a quick spike of sales from selling to a fleeting audience.

It has the healthiest long term sales the series ever has. It even sold more in 2015 than it did in 2014 which is fantastic for a 3 year old game.
