The problem with most new aoe players is they try and play like it's sim city when it's really starcraft with swords.

Anyway, what are you fucking up? your macro, your micro, or are there moments in the game where you don't know what the fuck you should be doing?
For macro, practice. Don't play Huns.
For micro, play Mongols or Byzantines for a bit. Cav Archers teach you to micro.
If you don't know what the fuck you should be doing, that's something that only comes with experience, but in general you should be always pumping Villagers and making whatever unit is cost-effective vs. what your opponent's pumping out.

Cucking up the whole map with palisades is pretty damn effective if you're vsing a melee civ. French paladins shit themselves in rage if you've got a scorp behind a palisade.

Kind of a dangerous route, I find it pays to pump out a few skirms for scouting + meatwalling defense. Maybe palisade off a choke or put a tower up near your gold*.

*don't put the tower up if you scout and the guy's tunneling econ or teching hard. Tower is expensive. Good against feudal rushes tho
