I hated that whole bed of chaos area my first playthough. Then I found the hidden bonfire near the end of the lava, wasn't as shitty after that.

it's like fucking quake

can't find a good picture but Tenrai's castle (mission 10-a) in Tenchu 3 was just about the blandest area in the game. Such a let down for a final stage.
