Yeah he does git gud. Just give him the right skills and good gear then program him to use said skills and he becomes a fukken tank. I always use him in every run. Remember to use morrigan in your party ALWAYS, unless you are a mage yourself, just build your party well. Easy way to win almost anytime is controlling the mage character of your party and just spam the fire, ice and lighting cone skills.

There is a point where you can keep him soppy or harden his heart and skin to become what he was meant to be(won't spoil it).

Make sure you spec him properly as a tank and he becomes a fucking beast.

Unless you know the ins and out of the game enough to make a setup that doesn't require a tank, or unless you are a tank yourself he's pretty much needed.

I guess you could build shale as a tank though.

Alternatively Sten and Oghren as well but they aren't that good at it since they are mostly spec'd for 2handed. You do get Sten eary enough to "mostly" fix that though.
