What's /v/'s opinion on collectible card games? Which

Magic the gathering is the superior choice. just go on twitch and watch some faggot draft a cube(draft mode, similar to HS arena) on the magic online client...you can think and draft decks, weird and obscure strategies, that would never be possible in HS or other card games, not even in constructed mode.

unfortunately, either online or in paper, it costs gorillion dollars and doesn't embrace the free to play model.( magic duels is a joke). the "pirate clients" are mostly empty so it's hard to organize an event.

among the acceptable free to play ones Heroes of Might and Magic Duel of Champions had the superior and original gameplay. high strategy, low RNG, lot of decks were possible.
unfortunately ubisoft and incompetent devs crashed its potential and now servers are closing(see pic).

i don't know many good online "free" card games, so you are welcome to let us discover hidden gems.

the best one i tried so far is Duelyst.
if you like heartstone you HAVE to like and prefer duelyst because Duelyst is an heartstone carbon-copy, in gameplay and economic model, to which it was added an additional layer of strategy with a movement grid, slightly less atrocious RNG, and an higher legendary drop rate, faster quests ( you can get your daily money way faster than HS).

of course it's a year behind in term of quantity of content, but it's getting filled and it's already highly enjoyable.go pick it up.

I actually play magic as well, unfortunately I work during prime FNM hours so I only get to play with friends occasionally. Currently playing atarka red and used to run a super janky precursor golem deck when I was new.

Really wish instant speed spells were possible in online games without them slowing the match down to a crawl.

Think: tactical RPG meets hearthstone and that's Duelyst.
Also, relatively speaking, legendaries are worthless in Duelyst. As in they aren't game-breakingly broken must haves. Most decks don't even run them except as optional swap-ins.

The gameplay is fairly different, but the UI's functionality and economic model feels like it was copy pasted.

The big addition I really liked was the inclusion of extra optional tutorials/challenges that teach you the more obscure mechanics, they even reward gold upon completion.

You really don't, but that guy is going at it all wrong. You need to just get a select few Legendaries from Basic and GVG packs, then go to town with Casino Mage. You'll go up 5 ranks, down 4, up 4, down 5, and somehow end up in Legend, because RNG is legendary.

Casino Mage still wins half the time because they don't care about what the enemy plays. It's all about rolling the dice.

Duelyst is like Hearthstone but better.

IT IS heartstone with a grid, where every unit can move 2/turn and you can only attack the 8 squares around you and summon in the 8 squares around one of your unit. half the abilities work on units in the 8 squares around.
it doesn't have secrets, you draw 2 cards/turn and your hero is present as a walking 2/25 unit mostly immune to spells.

you could take every HS card and put it in Duelyst and it would end up pretty similar to the current Duelyst gameplay, even when looking at the numbers on the cards.
the damage system works exactly like HS, you have to continuosly trade creatures with the same attack/life math choices, choose between board clear or going face, optimize the action order to get the most value, has the same number of "deathrattle, battlecry, taunt, silence..." abilities, spells cover the same roles and are able to do roughly the same things.

you take simultaneous turns and there are three zones(attack, defense, bench) that mean that there's an incredible amount of guesswork and thinking, which is pretty fun

also has graveyard, deck searching, activated abilities, psuedo-instants, artifacts, "enchantments" and all that fun stuff from magic

also has a pretty cool system where you get to choose three "commanders", which is a bunch of creatures that start in the command zone, and certain passive or active effects can be used directly from the command zone, so you sort of start with "hero powers". The commanders can also be played with haste, and their colors determine what factions you can have in your deck, so if you have one "angel" faction card and two "zombie" faction cards you can use angel cards with one purity and zombie cards with up to two purity, or angel+zombie faction cards.

Spellweaver is my favorite hidden gem. I played it every day for about two months (and I have a really shit attention span so that's an achievement). Its mechanics allow a lot of counterplay without getting bogged down in it.
Unfortunately it's not all that popular and isn't receiving content updates fast enough to gain popularity quickly, so I fear it will die eventually.

Anything I can play on my iPhone? I don't mind paying lonely for packs as long as the initial start-up is free.

You can trade or gift cards, there's a bunch of really good more rare cards so it's like a normal card game, but you get a fair bunch of free boosters, and there's a rotation of 5 pre-built decks that you can play for free(there's more than 5 decks, you always have 5 to choose from at any one time). Some factions are trash without more cards but my first deck(flame dawn with verore support for card draw and removal) kicked the shit out of most other players.

The developers seem to be practically dead with no new content since like summer, but there's been talk of a new developer and a rebirth or something, and I think the player numbers are relatively healthy as of now.

just like hearthstone packs are 100g each
but you get 15g per 2 wins instead of 10 per 3
crafting is exactly the same except things cost less to craft. You get a lot of bonus gold from hidden quests and challenges early on so you can make at least one decent deck pretty quickly.

I find matches faster than I do in hearthstone, the game is still in beta so they haven't marketed much though.
