You buy stuff to burn with coins that you start out as. Your neighbor sends you letters and this is how the plot is told. You can save or burn the letters. Your choice.

You get coins to burn shit with by buying stuff with coins you got from burning shit. I dont really think there is a better way to explain the game. Its cheap but fun.,

It sounds like you just want to walk around and have conversations with NPCs. You won't find that in a sandbox but maybe try Lucasarts or Telltale games?
