Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire were gen 3 games, very fun but no post game stuff. Emerald was a third counterpart that had a super expansive post game called the battle frontier. When Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire were announced everyone was saying "of course Battle Frontier will be in why wouldn't they" but when it actually came out it was replaced by a super watered down post game called the Battle Resort. That little statue is on the battle resort, along with a bunch of other nods of "hey guys the battle frontier exists look we're referencing it". Basically Game Freak said fuck you to everyone.

In Pokemon Generation 3, they introduced the Battle Frontier, 7 optional gauntlets with challenging fights and twists on the battle system.

This newest game is a remake of Generation 3's games but it didn't include the Battle Frontier. They gave you one single generic gauntlet with no twists, and then slapped that there to basically say "fuck you, we didn't bother."
