I get that you're talking about the arkham combat system being very simple and making you feel "awesome" with very simple inputs.
But the assassin's creed system is different, even though it has the same problems.

A combat system isn't necessarily bad for letting you do cool shit, as long as there is actual challenge involved.
The arkham system has worked well enough in some games, while the assassin's creed one is almost universally bad

It's easy to apply, easy to expand and lets you focus on other aspects of game development. It also helps the devs work around making more "awesome" animations for the player character that they'll be able to "pull off" with a single button press while still feeling like they did something resulting in a wide array of players feeling satisfaction out of the combat.

That being said, I really don't think a system where batman , a black belt in more than 8 martial arts, has trouble fighting thugs would be more appropriate than a mary sue one
