Good idea but they went to far in some places. They should've reserved it only for Pokés that needed it, or when given to powerful/slash legendary Pokémon it should change the way they play instead of simply making them more overpowered. I don't get how Sugimori claimed Mega Kanga was overpowered but didn't say anything against Rayquayquay.

They should've just added evolutions or improved the stats for some pokemon. Bannette could've gotten an evolution but now it's forever shit.

It's a really lazy way for Nintendo to make underpowered Pokemon at least semi-viable. The problem with mega-evolutions occurs when Nintendo decides to add mega-evolutions to already good pokemon (Lucario, Salamence, etc.) in which case it either makes them completely broken or really overpowered.

I hate it. It didn't fit in with the "lore" and screwed with the gameplay too.

I like Mega Evolutions conceptually to fit with the "3 evolution rule" of Pokemon. Something like Charizard was doomed to be mediocre forever due to it, but I didn't want Pokemon to start introducing 4th evolutions, then 5th evolutions, and so on, because it would be retarded.
Same with buffing Legendaries, especially Mewtwo. That was one of the best things about it. "Mewtwo's the ultimate Pokemon!" "Yeah now we have god" >780 BST mega "As we were SAYING"

Now I have hopes for things like Wigglytuff, Flygon, Jumpluff, etc to all be good as like, Beedrill, Pidgeot, Ampharos, and Gallade's megas were.

My complaint is the other things. Mawile could've had a regular evolution and a baby. So could shit like Audino. They really didn't need to be cemented as the highest stage of their evolution families. Especially shit like Houndoom, Banette and Manectric.

Was mega evolution needed?

Not really but a lot of older pokemon were falling out of favour due to power creep.

At least it's given some a new breath of life like Kangaskhan, Mawile, Pinsir, Ampharos and Gardevoir.

I'd still prefer it if they continued buffing the base forms though. Look at pokemon such as Dragonite; powerful enough even without a mega thanks to Multiscale and the new item Weakness Policy.

Mega evolution is mostly fine. It's a nice compromise for Pokemon that need an evolution but are the third in their line or their design is too "final" to give one, a mistake gen 4 made with some Pokemon. But they got carried away with it, giving it to too many cool and popular Pokemon who really don't need it and ignoring some who need any kind of help they can get. While some of the gen 4 evolutions are shit design wise I do personally like most of them and I hope they don't just use mega evolution as an excuse to never give an evolution to any older Pokemon.

I'm glad they didn't go overboard like they did in gen 5. There's not much new Pokémon in gen 6 but I think almost all of them are some top tier designs. Only ones I don't like are Delphox (it's hidden ability is shit and it could use a wider movepool) and Goodra (because fuck you Sugimori you ruined another line).

Gen 3 is objectively better though. It introduced abilities which would change Pokémon battling forever. It also changed the IV and EV system so that the same Pokémon wouldn't have the same stats. It also had new fossil Pokémon unlike Gen 2.
