What the fuck is with the trend of obsessive realism in vidya? Do people not realize that fictional media can stray from realism?
How would we have Mawmen from Half Life if we had to be realistic?
Because there are no creative writers/artists in the industry, so it's easier to create Realistic settings, because most of the Art direction is already given.
It's like making a game on unity using default assets.
yes it is a >mawman thread
in a guide for Half Life it referred to them as Mawmen. At that time there was only zombies you see in the top left and bottom right, which had maws.
THE FLIGHT PLAN I JUST FILED WITH THE CITADEL LISTS ME, MAWMEN, DOCTOR FREEMAN HERE
Really? That was easy to spot. What I didn't notice, or realize was that the people were alive and probably conscious under that headcrab and must be losing their fucking minds from all the body modification and shit.
Hes kinda right, but the reason for the trend is its what developers pushed for. More graphical power in consoles meant they could push for more realistic stuff. Kids grew up on this and saw more graphics = Better, and since that power was used for realism, the jump could be made that Realistic = Better than stylized.
It doesn't help that games in general are heavily marketed towards kids who in turn want to be perceived as mature, and their view of maturity tends to be mean more realistic and gritty = mature.
That said, its also had a negative impact because now Devs can't really shy away from realism as easily cause thats what kids demand now.
Oh it can, but I don't think it'd be triple A gaming that makes the push. As odd as it sounds, the larger the company, the less willing to take risks they wind up becoming. Eventually stylized probably will wind up becoming more popular again, but it'll mostly be smaller studios making the push, and only will become popular if theres a massive cult smash that hits it out of the park. YL might becoming that but only time will really tell on how its received by newer players
