Release order, no big mods at first - only latest patch / the Starter Packs, Master difficulty always, disable crosshair.

Dont give up in the beginning! You start literally from the bottom of the barrel, with shittiest gear.

While I liked LA myself, it is not quite finished, + it's a literal fan-made game. Starting with SoC is the best way to go.

To answer your question OP, both Call of Pripyat and Shadow or Chernobyl are very good and worth your time. They have different strengths and weaknesses, but the overall experience is worthwhile.

I'd say Shadow of Chernobyl is the most intense, however I might be biased since that was my first Stalker game.

CoP felt a little too tame for me. It lacked some of the really crazy survival elements where you are on your own balls deep lost in the zone.

SoC should be played first for the fact alone that it is the only one kinda constructed to "teach" the player the Zone's wonders. It's a tad more "linear", but not a pipe, and there's many memorable setpieces.

CoP completely lacked the "hobo phase", sending you off with excellent gear right away. Plus the anomalies were limited to their own clusters, and fucking Bandits were neutral towards you??

Just wait for Shoker 3.0 and Gunslinger mods for CoP to come out. Those completely revamp the weapons, making them more modular, 3D scopes, and Gunslinger in particular add a lot of new animations, like when applying medkits, bandage, antirad, buffing chems, etc.
And regarding Lost Alpha, it's good, but I can't stand the vanilla guns anymore.

What do you guys think about arsenal overhaul 3.1 for call of pripyat? I'm using it right now and there is now way I can go back to the vanilla guns.

The difficulty spikes in this game are crazy, at least it doesn't get much worse after the first X lab.
