No-one's going to be intimidated by Nintendo even if they have the superior hardware. PS4 and Xbox One have the core market where Call of Duty and Fifa reign supreme. The average consumer is going to stay where his friend is - either on PS4 or Xbox One.

When consoles and home gaming was at its peak, gens used to last only 5 years because of how fast consoles would sell
Nowadays when mobile got such a prominent space, consoles sell less, thus the need for longer generations in order to recover losses and reach sale projections

ideally with developers getting used to the tech on PS4 and Xbone they'd optimize games towards them more, making the most of the technology and push it to the limit
