Well I think the novels are before he got hooked into that dumb ninja armor. I remember the descriptions of him being pretty much "nondescript Asian guy".
He was fucking awful in ME3 though. Brags about how awesome and badass he is, then runs away every five seconds to heal, and then that goddamn hatemail he sends you, it was like exactly what I would have expected someone to post if they were satirizing him on /v/.
