I have no problem with this. I use both Dual Shock and Xbox controller and it doesn't matter if it says Y or "triangle". Same with keyboards.
On the other hand, OP is right, there's no reason for games to do this. It can't be that time consuming to add icons for different controllers.

I just got DaS1 for PC and downloaded DSfix. I wanted to change the in-game button icons to that of the Wii U Pro but it's not working. I enabled texture override in DSfix and put the image file in the tex_override folder. i've tried Google but couldnt find a straight answer.

Had to play through SOTFS like that because it wouldn't recognize my gamepad and it's not that bad. Parrying, guard break and jumping attacks were very cumbersome but otherwise it was fine.
