Wii was popular because it was literally aimed at the casual market, with the motion controller gimmicks, while also still packing the good ol' Nintendo brand.

PS2 did well because it was the cheapest DVD player, had backwards compatibility with PS1, and numerous huge titles and sequels people were already looking forward to.
