I was interested in this game.
I've played around on the Wii version of GG games with my cousin and loved the characters and possibilities. However, didn't have a stick as I am accustomed to using an arcade stick with SF4 and more recently UMVC3.
Since UMvC3 is an anime fighter, I'll love Xrd right? I love the art style and characters since knowing some of them from GG+R(?) as stated earlier.
My only concern is the player count. I looked on steam and the player count was ~450 players at 10pm EST.
Also, how is the netplay? I have 100/100 fiber, midwest.
Since I started from absolutely no FG knowledge, it would've been impossible to not improve over the course of a week.
I just try to learn one new lesson per day. Slow and steady.

I play I-No and remember to use notes more, but fall back too much on the same muscle memory gimmicks and chemical love spam.

This. Anyone remotely good just corner carries for half your health and then one corner mixup into death. Might occasionally get a chance to play for about 10 seconds before they break through or block a mixup in corner, but they rc and hit high if i was blocking low or low if i was blocking high or just continue pressure til i crack. Pretty demoralizing. I like GG more, but I at least feel like I get to play in P4A or BB.
I've tried 966, 969, 696, 9566, and even that weird ass 665789 shit for hoverdash into IAD or whatever. All of them seem to come out too slow, or not at all.
The answer is putting an offense of your own up, once you have some short combos you can RC to demand respect, you'll become a lot more threatening. Defense is important, but you can't just wait it out.. Learn your pokes and how to hit confirm
Someone told me that GG is essentially a big guessing game. There's very little 'reaction' based stuff for mixups, so the only option is to get in there and make the enemy 'just guess' against you.

There's more to pot then 6k loops, also do the easier version with trishula. It does more dmg anyways then the old loops.

I don't because my internet is garbage because I live out in the boondocks. With that said, I still practice and learn, and travel to the town over to go to arcades or travel around to do tournaments, even if I get bodied sometimes.
Shame there are places in the US where they still have Satellite and Dial-up, real shame.
It's mostly due to the fact that some counties and areas just don't have enough people so businesses like Comcast or Time Warner see no profit in laying down copper wire or fiber optics, and the FCC wont do anything about it. Despite the FCC's recent stuff over throttling, they still allow throttling as long as "they do it to everyone and it's not selective".
The country is pretty garbage, hell even some states have laws that prevent them from laying down cable in certain areas. I remember there was a thing about Kentucky where they're finally laying down 3000 lines of fiber optics for the entire state, but it's not guaranteed that Comcast, Mediacom, Time Warner, or whoever will actually use them, because they don't have to if they find no profit from the people there in order to set up places and pay new employees.
US is only good if you live in a major city really. Kansas City and Austin are the only places with decent internet, KC having the best internet in the country.

How do you open up with millia at the start of the match? I keep getting smash and cant find a safe way in.
Double head morbid is not a reversal. Mashing punch would have prevented the throw but loses to any meaty. He could have FD jumped but he might have gotten air thrown. If this happens to you, you should not be thinking about what you should do in the corner at 20% health, you should be thinking about how not to get in the situation next time (don't get counterhit 6ped by Slayer or counterhit 2s into drill by Zato)

Just started playing yesterday actually, never got into fighting games but something about Guilty Gear attracts me. Been trying to use Zato, though I was a little disappointed when he wasn't as smug as his select screen art implied.
As a complete scrub to figthing games in general, should I just learn the basics and jump right into online, or git gud at bots first?

I don't think people understand how much of a scrub killer Potemkin is. Considering how many people in these threads are still ass picking up Pot means you get alot of free wins.
Pot only becomes hard at a upper mid level of play. And even then it kinda depends purely on the MU like if its Zato Sin or Faust it sucks ass but its not like Sol Pot is bad at all.
Buster is the last thing you master. Theres no need to fear backdash or jump back faultless if you know the pot cant convert hits to corner carry and dmg. If you watch a good pot, they have combos and do hammerfalls into mixups that make you block. Its when they know they have to block that the fear of the buster comes into play. If all you got is a prayer your random jump in or tick throws work, youll never condition them to block.
I wouldn't say helpless. I play against a decent Zato often and when i pick my Potemkin its a hard as fuck matchup but once you get in you can do shit.
People really underestimate how hard it is to lock someone decent down in GG completely. Honestly outside of top level play id say Axl Pot is harder then any other MU because its the most likely one you'll face someone who can zone you properly in. And even that isn't impossible at all.
Grapplers are very mindset specific against good people though. You have to be ready to accept that you're going to get hit well getting it sometimes. And as easy as that sounds in reality it really isn't easy to get used to.
Im not good but id reccomend doing challenges especially the later ones. Gives you an ideo of what kind of combos zato likes to do and do missions and also pay attention to tutorial. Play online and learn from mistake. For me when I played online id not know how to poke so went to challenges and looked for slash to heavy slash pokes to give me an idea. Also dont try to do crazy stuff. Start simple with what the tutorial teaches you and build from there
Some Pot things off top of my head:
Canceling normals into Hammerfall break and continuing pressure / bustering at unexpected times is important.
Instant blocking, being good at inputting buster fast and knowing when you can buster on defense is important.
Backdash is godlike, use it.
Learn some easy 6k loops, f.ex. against Sol something into 2D -> RC -> 6K -> HFB-> 6K -> trishula -> 6K -> trishula -> heat extend is simple and deals shitload of damage.
Also learn to combo meterless in corner from buster, you gotta take that damage whenever you can.
5D has ridiculous range, use it in strings if your opponent can't block it. After ICPM ender, you can do the bullshit trishula YRC oki
Hammerfall Break. The P follow up for 6HS. It cancels the dash in a move that doesn't hit. Something like a feint. In order to do it inmediately press HS and P at the same time.
I was wondering. I'm capable of pulling off 6k loops, but not online due to the 2-3f delay.
Due to using a pad, I cant actually use p and HS at the same time due to pad lay-out. Would it be wiser to use some controller input mapper even though the game already supports my controller, or just keep on using the P S shortcut instead? The second shortcut kinda works but causes me to YRC if I press it at the same time as HS.
Pot's charge time is only 30 frames, you'll have plenty of time to charge during something like 2P -> 2S blockstring.
At first it can be tricky to cancel the hammerfall late enough that you get to buster range after longer strings, but it will click after a while
Most normals can be inputted holding back so yoou are already charging (1S instead of 2S, for example). For normals that require you to hold 6 you have to start charging as soon as possible and you will have enough time to get all the charge needed as in this (>>322117058) case.
Well I think you should change your layout if it hinders you, it will be a bitch to play on a new layout for a while though but it will be worth it, you really want to be able to do those loops and faster cancels in general

why can't i get a juggle off 4K? is it the prior string spacing / timing that matters rather than the juggle afterwards? they are like hitting the floor before i recover and can input PPP / etc, so even watching the sample i don't know how to fix this.

It has something to do with how quickly you dash after your IAD combo to land the 5K>4K juggle into PPP. I still haven't landed it yet and it frustrates me that I still can't get it. The IAD used to be a problem with me but not anymore.
This game has a shitload of dash canceling. Not all of it is in combos but if you can't dash cancel Slayer's bite/dandy step you're basically playing half a character. Not as much as Blazblue but why would you want more of it?

take a break and come back to it at a later time. I used to have alot of problems with IAD so I practice it for like 30 minutes a day till I got bored with it but a week later I finally got IAD down! You can't force yourself to get it in 1 go let alone a day. Gotta practice the input on a consistent basis.
I started playing about a month ago, and I know people say its hard as fuck to learn, but I've picked up how to do dive loops with i no. It took me like a month to learn how to do FADCs in SF4, and even longer to do basic combos. In GG I can most of the combos in an hour of practice. I swear to god I'm never going back to rhythmic fighters again. Theyre so fucking un-intuitive.
just do his basic air juggle. its not worth the effort to do tk bombers. you arent losing much dmg at all just doing j.k dj.hs dj.d dj.bomber. more consistent, guaranteed not to drop and still has corner carry and solid dmg. you aint going pro and as you say ,you dont have time to learn.
if you wanted to follow the "play Ryu" type of advice, play anyone that uses pretty basic Gatling / chain logic (PKSHD), since that will teach you most all of the game systems that work for pretty much everyone. There's a few characters with their own thing outside of that, like Ram not having P/K ground Gatling, and instead having 3d-fighter type P/K animation strings. Also bare in mind there's also a few groups of air control and dashes. Some people can double air dash, some can double jump or airdash once, etc.
Honestly it's a little like learning KoF. There's tons of fundamentals that all work in some manner on nearly every character and you can therefor approach the basics the same way with nearly everyone. PKSH[special move] is an almost universal day 1 combo.
Those "technicalities" you mention are where every character becomes unique, though. Because breaking out from just mashing Gatling and actually DOING COOL THINGS is what defines each character, which is why I feel like KoF is a good comparison; KoF has a huge roster but the game has universal rules that work on nearly everyone. Learning a character is then about learning how they personally get to break those rules. Xrd is the same, you should learn a character by first learning the game systems with whoever seems cool to you, play a few, see how they differ. Then you can easily identify on a specific character, the best air normals for various reasons, the best spacing buttons, the best meaty dash-in buttons (close.S in Xrd is usually designed to be a really good button here), AA, etc.
Ive found thats the reason to play strong players. They force you to use techniques like blitz and dead angle, not just because of relentless offense but because they will use them against you, reminding you of those techniques while also showing you possible holes in your offense
When does ASW usually announce/show new characters for console? Isnt Revelator supposed to be around March? Shouldnt we see some Dizzy/Raven/Tuner/whoever they are putting in? I feel like Capcom does a way better job with introducing and building hype with character reveals. Wish ASW did more with the hype. Feels like they just dump a few shots to famitsu and then you maybe see a vid week before release.

That is basically like your entire point against pretty much everyone. Also I-No is second only to Millia in terms of having shitty neutral in terms of her normals out of the entire cast. What is she doing on the ground to stop you? The note is pretty much the main thing that you have to respect for her.
Her 214k or chemical love or whatever has a lot of range and comes out fast which catches me out a lot. Maybe my reflexes aren't good enough yet to notice it coming out and punish it but usually if I run from the ground or air to punish her note she can throw those out fast

Not sure if Millia is one of the characters that can dash right under Chemical Love, but depending on how far away you are you can punish it easily if you duck under it. Millia can probably just sweep it if she's close enough considering how far her sweep goes.

She is, so she could just dash in and get a CH 2H into a corner carry combo and start her setplay.
Try being Leo vs I-No.
Her horizontal music attack hits from further away than any of Leo's normals, is faster than any of his specials, and cannot be low-profiled, not even by his sweep.
You can't even reflect it back at her like you can most projectiles.
That one move is the bane of my Leo existance.
Use your own fireball and YRC to follow behind it, it has 2-3 hits so Chemical Love can't destroy it.

And don't get me wrong i have little issue with Leo since i main Faust and sub Ky/Axl. But don't pretend like you put forth the normal amount of thought with the lowest execution , simplest mixup and most netplay character there is.

Bro, I've sat through the story 4 times and 3 of them were when I was sober. Waifus are disgusting and this is why I dislike Elphelt in particular, she's too damn sweet.
Maybe also because you suck shit. Leo is only annoying in netplay honestly. Mainly because his strings are weak to being IB'd for a pressure character. But in 4f delay or more it becomes exceedingly hard to IB some of the strings you need to so hes alot more annoying.
Leo is braindead in general but not a good character in 2f-3f delay or offline. He thrives in sub par connections and low levels. Also people don't always hate him because they lose to him. Hes a bland ass character who is autopilot as all hell. In fact most Leos i know pretty much all of them say Leo is the character you go to if you wanna play GG without learning it.
Elphelt would be Leo but with alittle more you have to learn and far more effective. But yeah Leo is just annoying not as good as Chipp or Elphelt pressure but 10x more annoying in a poor connection because you know how bad shit is if you IB it but its like being held back from it.
Honestly i just pick Ky/Potemkin on most Leo's in netplay no need to both with a real match they can't seem to do anything if they can't get in and blender with braindead strings they pray you won't IB.

I really don't get the Leo hate. Yeah, his combos are easy as shit, but his neutral is horrible. Getting is very tough if your opponent is any good.
As for reads: I'm talking about Brynhildr Stance. Kahn Schild, to be more specific. Being able to figure out whether or not your opponent is gonna mash P/reversal or block is very important. If you wanna call it a guessing game, then go ahead, but I actually focus pretty hard in order to understand my opponent's habits.
Brynhildr Stance in general offers a lot of mix-up options, but they can all be disrespected with ease. Hence why Kahn Schild is so important.
I'm not gonna act like he's a hard character to use, but he's not braindead.

Millia has one of the best runs in the game, it is enough threat against I-No so she has to do certain things, it is a guess after all. If she does HCL you are going underneath it, if she does note you are more than likely hitting her and if she does any lows or quick attacks you should be quick enough to react and block. If she approaches you with airdash, which can be the case, 5P or 6P is more than enough to make it a decent guessing game for both parties. It is the same for people who use Venom, 6P will just explode options.

Hair car is not that great against her. You have to use your mobility as I-No is slow as shit in most cases and relies heavily on close proximity pressure.
If you do not have dagger, you have no need to worry as you still have speed over her.
Millia hes good neutral normals, senpai. Her 5P is one of the best normal moves in the game, 5K is great, 6P is solid, 2H great AA, sweep is great, 5S(f) and 5H are both fast normals that lead to damage and mix-ups...all those moves you do not want to get hit by in the right circumstances.
Leo vs. I-No is alright because HCL hits him crouching.
HCL can be lwo profiled by any move that has a low profile property (Sol/Venom sweep, Axl/I-No 2K, runs that reduce character profile). It is a high attack. Leo can run through it with his command run and connect with 6P within range like any other character, but Venom's is still the best in this case.

Figure out what works first or else combos are useless. Try and find easy ways your character can get in and start hitting, then work your combos into that. Combos only extend damage from your openings. All about fundamentals senpai

I kind of agree with you for Elphelt, but Ram, Jack'O, Unga and the others don't look like BB characters at all. I'll definetly redesign Jack'O to make her design less sexualized but with those pants and all those belts she's totally a GG character.

That's one of the reasons I love about this game, there's such a huge range of skill, you can play this game for over a year and feel like you're okay at the game. Only to have someone come remind you how much better you can be first hand. It gets me pumped, remembering there's so much I can try improving on and makes me want to practice and get to that level.

Jack's clothes aren't really sexualized it's her animations. Her main problem is her fucking voice and childish mannerisms. It's fucking annoying as fuck and it's going to be polarizing to anyone outside of Japan. Bitch is a grown ass woman and she acts like she is 10 or retarded in between shaking her ass.

Carl's doll is much more of a puppet than eddie is for zato and it's positioning is much more difficult. It also acts like a wall so you also have to try to position your opponent between you and the doll.
There's nothing like that for zato. Just look up how carl plays if you are unfamiliar.
In the sense of the character being faster than everybody else, but have low health and damage output? Chipp. But gameplay wise, they are nothing alike.

Man, Taokaka was the first BB character my friend showed me and she just immediately killed the series for me.

I brought up those 4 specifically because they feel the most like Guilty Gear out of any of the other ones, except A.B.A maybe. How do you not think Guilty Gear when you think I-No? What do you even think when you think Guilty Gear?
I-No is pretty iconic, I'll give you that. But the mascot of the series in my mind will always be Sol
even though I hate him. His free-moving, wild moves, his subtle-as-a-bus name of "Badguy", and his flames-and-chains theme all scream 'BY THE WAY WE'RE REFERENCING METAL HERE' to my mind.
Millia and Venom are notable because of their not using conventional weapons. Hair, really? And a pool set? It was that uniqueness that really drew me in and made me think the series was something else.
There's also That Man, who, like Sol, has a name that's just a slap in the face to convention. They could've given him some mysterious, lofty-sounding name but decided to not even go that far and just call him That Man. MYSTERY.
With all this said I don't hate the new characters; they just don't spring to mind when I think of the series.
They made MF the opposite directions as well.
Also removed Killer Joker so no more frc extra jump combo extender. Don't get me started on the "new" Jack Hound, if it's even called that anymore.
