The Fallout series does not actually take place in the 1950's/1960's, it actually is an alternate dimension of ours where they branched off around that point. It takes place in that worlds 2077.

The first was going to be localized with the title 'Earthbound', which obviously never got released officially in the west. Which is why it is commonly referred to as 'Earthbound Zero'
