Try all of them, pick the one that's most fun for you. Not the one that's "most respectable" or the one that completes missions the fastest, just the one that's most fun.

You play every 1* training mission and figure out which weapon fits your individual taste and playstyle. You use that weapon, maybe pick a secondary to mix things up every now and then.

Just be aware that if you pick LS, everyone will hate you and no one will want to hunt with you.

Personally I just use what looks fun, and right now that's CB. That thing rips monsters apart. Makes capture quests a bitch, though.

Then there's a QTE where you hold R while the monster's flailing and mash buttons when it isn't to fill a bar up.

First, I try them all one after the other. If one seems particularly shitty, I will read a weapon guide to make sure I'm not missing anything. Then, I will look into endgame viability for each of them. I will also consider what weapons pair well with each others, and how well they stack, so I'm fitting a party role that's in demand.

Online can happen whenever you feel ready, but if you're new I'd suggest going in with a group of people who are willing to help you out and cover for you as you learn.

Most people wait until they feel comfortable with their weapon and armor before jumping online since they don't want to fail a quest for others (3 strikes for all 4 players).

But online works quite like you'd expect. People bring their own weapons/buffs/items and go off hunting together.

GS does cutting, Hammer does impact.
GS can cut tails, Hammers can KO.

They are like two sides of the same coin, both are slow heavy hitters, but both can do stuff the others can't.

This is the first time I've played any decent amount of time on a MH game (I played MHFU for like 2 hours maybe). I tried out most of the weapons, but the Charge Blade just hooked me, the ability to guard and have okay mobility along with the switch to a lesser greatsword/hammer for KOs is awesome.

I also Hunting Horn for hammertime buffs.

Previously I had only used Lance and maybe SnS or LS.

Pick the weapon you think is awesome design-wise. All of them are good, some are harder to use but you can kill everything with all the types (except Sword and Shield, don't even try, waste of time).

Watch some tutorials on YT, some weapons have hidden mechanics behind them.

I can't help you with armors because that's a pure preference choice.

What is the deal with Yian Kut-Ku, anyway? I'm one of those people that started with Monster Hunter Tri, so I'd never fought one until MH4U. Honestly, they just felt like generic bird wyverns with extremely basic attack patterns that, on very rare occasions, shot an extremely inaccurate fireball. It was probably the most boring hunt I've done so far.

Not that I dislike them, or anything, I just don't get where the obsession comes from.

For me it was from all the way back in the PS2 game.
Up until that point you've fought Bullfango, Velociprey/dromes, kelbi, just a whole lot of weak stuff. And since it was the first time you had done any of this, you started to get a swelled head.

Then Kut-Ku shows up.
This stupid looking pink chicken.
And he kicks your ass 7 ways to Sunday.

Eventually you git gud and beat him up, and you learn that he's easy peasy in the long run. But he was, especially back then, the quintessential tutorial wyvern.
Nearly all of his moves and tells were repeated somewhere down the line in other stronger monsters.

So that's where the love comes from, from him teaching you the game.

Just moved to the second town and I still haven't really picked my weapon. I keep switching between GS, Hammer, Charge Blade and SnS. Sometimes I even use LS or SA. They are all just too much fun, but I have to start picking one soon.
