You basically use them when you send your opponent against the wall so you can chain attacks, and also to punish whiffed attacks.

Some characters have huge cooldowns on their attacks, making them really unsafe because the opponent can use an assist to fuck you over. Cloud of Darkness comes to mind, that's the main reason she's shit tier. But if you're only playing in singleplayer mode you won't have to worry about the lack of balance, you'll probably get places even with bad characters.

Webm related, that's how you use assists to chain attacks most of the time. You basically make it so your opponent is unable to dodge it. So either by sending him against the walls as I've said, or by using an assist when he's using a slow-ass attack that forces him to stay put for a while.

Protip : Kuja and Jecht are pretty much the best assists. Sephiroth is also pretty good. A lot of the other characters are fucking useless as assists.

I think Duodecim new comers are the only ones who have a big chance of being cut. That said...

Honestly, I loved nearly every duodecim edition aside from Yuna. I couldn't really get into her play style.
Laguna is my favorite though based on personality alone. Not to mention he was tons of fun to play as. I later picked up Tifa and Vaan as well. Both are hella fun, but I think I'd be most upset by losing Laguna or Tifa than the others.

As for original vets...
Tidus and Squall were my go tos. Picked up Kuja for a caster/villain.

Y'shtola looks neat, but Noctis is the one I'm most hyped for.

You'd be surprised, it's really not that hard to pull off as long as you have enough room. And that's coming from someone who is completely unable to time Jecht's combos.

Done on a maximum difficulty AI and tested on a human opponent with auto-recover enabled. Cannot be dodged, those are timed dodge cancels and are still present in Jecht in duodecim. SE saying they took them completely out of the game was false, some other characters still retain dodge cancel legit combos. Another example here.

The auto-tracking of the cecil AI in the previous webm doesn't work for all characters though since some have weird hit-boxes and will be slammed down by jecht before cecil can pick them up. There is a work-around around for that which I already figured out as well.

Learn the timing of all the jecht combos, preferably by listening to the audio cues of jecht hitting his opponent.

Every starting combo of jecht goes like this:
Ground: Jecht does one hit, press O exactly after you hear it.
Air: Jecht does a 2 hit bicycle combo, press O exactly after that.

After you have the combos down, learn the dodge cancel which is done by inputting a dodge right you send and opponent flying from the ground with a very specific chase combo.

The vid shows that after the X appears for a chase you input up+dodge(R+X) to cancel the chase and get a full combo while opponent is still in stun from the chase animation.

Yeah, real good when that lands. Tried with lvl2 charge UJS as well but unfortunately it comes out a tad late.

Another thing I tried and was pretty neat was to charge jecht blade on that ground combo instead of UJS and throw an assist to bring them to the ground so they can get raped by lvl2 jecht blade. Those double damage hits man.

Also triumphant grasp there at the end of the webm can also be charged to lvl1 before you let it rip but its something like a 1framer and I can never get it.
