>>276909381 It's crazy seeing screenshots from old /v/. Its culture was so different. The internet's culture in general was different back then. I miss it. 4chan was used like a message board of sorts.
>>276910173 What's wrong with using a trip on 4chan? Anonymity is an option, not a requirement. It wasn't until after chanology that this site got so fucking xenophobic. It's even worse nowadays with all the bitching about reddit and tumblr.
>>276910568 >>276910457 With a smaller community, unique faces become less of a problem and more and more people want to stand out amongst the crowd since they're likely to be frequenting daily and eventually make a name for themselves. After 4chan really started to gain some footing and had a larger influx of people less and less of them cared about people who tried to stand out because there would be so many people posting that one individual poster would mean nothing.
Even on big message boards or shit like reddit you're effectively anonymous until someone feels like clicking on your profile and seeing what else you've posted. But in a board like 4chan where everyone is anonymous by default it becomes much easier to hate on people who explicitly try and stand out.
>>276909791 >All those people that bought PSP's and laughed at DS players >Asked them what games they played on their PSPs >All of them weren't gamers, they just had GTA and some music on it, and some had a Lego game
Jesus, these were the people Sony tried to market the PSP too? No wonder it died. Why didn't they market it to the weebs and the Hunters?
The only thing that saved the PSP in Asia was DJ Max since Korean shit became popular. That, and Patapon was an enormous hit with the casuals.
Back when /b/ protested Scientology; look it up. It was a pretty big deal at the time, that didn't accomplish shit. But it also spread /b/ and 4chan like wildfire amongst the normals. Lot of anons look at it as a huge fucking mistake because of that.
>>276910457 >>276910568 >>276910608 Tripfags were largely ignored, it gets intense the longer they consider themselves tolerated. Has nothing to do with perceived shifts.
Just look at those fucking posts in the OP. If you're not arguing with a tripfag/namefag, they're posting smilies or replying to themselves and each other like shiteaters. People have largely forgotten what a scourge they are on a board that moves like /b/, but they're a fucking nightmare, don't kid yourselves.
It was pretty widespread for 2-3 years back there. Everybody used to know each board's tripfags.
>>276911120 The PSP had tons of gems but instead of marketing it to RPG and Action gamers, Sony tried to market it to the casuals here in Asia for a quick buck and it died when newer phones came out with the latest gimmicks and all the casuals abandoned the PSP.
>>276911147 It more or less stopped because they all migrated to /vg/ to ruin everything there. That and people realised that avatarfagging is actually against the rules. I'd say that the big names just got sick of keeping up their tripcodes, regardless of how much of a kick they got out of being the most obnoxious people on 4chan, or they got run over by a truck.
Been here since 2006. No, it isn't. If you're a tripfag and you don't contribute meaningful OC, you're ignored and shit on. This is the way it has always been. I can think of a single tripfag /v/ liked and it was Donkey Kong. you weren't here for when lancedjack basically ruined this forum for a fucking season.
>>276911121 Because Hindsight is 20:20 Still it's mostly antagonistic attitudes brought on by US vs THEM mentalities which just makes people shit on eachother and take up useless labels like being a part of any given website on the internet means anything or ever meant anything in the first place.
I mean hell, now it's Neo /pol/ vs the world where as opinions even on fucking videogames are tossed into this psuedo political debate where both sides are wrong and just flinging shit at eachother hitting every bystander they can.
People care too much on both sides as if it proves or changes anything and in the end it just makes people more jaded and shitpost because nothing good comes out of retards bickering 24/7
I think we just have too many posters to be able to moderate the site efficiently these days. Plus, with VPNs and proxies being widespread, any retard who wants to be a cancer on the community can continue to do so for as long as he wants. Also, /pol/ brought a whole bunch of unironic Neo-Nazis to the site, and they in turn brought the unironic Tumblr users to the site as well, like fleas on a dog. So nowadays, most everyone is a dumbass racist, a humorless leftist, or an autistic shitposter with temper issues who will post garbage all day long because they know they will not be stopped.
>>276911349 I wish people still made plenty of OC, or there was a desire to at least. I've got no good ideas so I don't make any, but if I did I would. I would hate to realise that everyone is in my position of being empty on creative juices.
>>276910173 Trips used to be pretty fun in the day, it wasn't as heavy scorned until around 2010 - 2012 or so and it created some nice OC at times. If you wanted to stand out among the legions at all you had to provide shit to go along with it, carve a niche, or just go die.
These days even if it came with OC or was being used for the right reasons it would be told to go fucking die though, in some ways it's a bit much in one direction.
There were some fun moments to go along with it; tripfags still caught shit, especially if they were shitty. There was one week when everyone pretended to be a knockoff of Anime_Expert_(Has seen 407+ animes completely, last watched: cocks) that created a bit of humor. Everyone was something like Dick_Expert_(Has sucked 214+ dicks completely) to fuck with the guy.
Eh, it wouldn't really make sense by today's standards. Just back then nothing was really serious business at all, the posting quality was less at times but it was more fun.
Not sure I have many old /v/ screens, it's all just /a/ stuff.
>>276911583 Have you noticed that newfag 'OC' (forced memes) are GOD-FUCKING-AWFUL?
Also can someone explain this bullshit where shitposters call EVERYTHING a meme now? I'm sick of newfags being obvious newfags and not lurking but goddamn, why do they obsess upon shitting up the fucking website?
>>276911486 I remember coming on the day after a huge thread where he caused another shitstorm and I read something about him getting him by a bus/truck or something. He's been gone ever since that day.
>>276911639 Or drawing dicks on Toady's avatars. If he posted in a thread everyone dropped what they were doing and started drawing dicks on him.
Of course the modern shitposting tripfag doesn't use a tripcode now because eveyrone filters it on instinct. They stay anon but adopt a posting gimmick so you know who it is but can't filter them because there goes the entire board if you do.
Funny sort of irony, that. But I think nowadays that 4chan is more or less widely known; back before chanology it still had the reputation as secret asshole of the internet and people were afraid to visit.
/v/ got pretty good at putting annoying tripfags in their place though. Like that one guy with the Cromartie avatars or the other guy who would always get spammed with "shut the fuck up" messages every time he posted. These are all pretty recent examples though.
>>276911796 >/v/ hates people from Ebaum's, Gaia, tumblr, reddit, etc mostly because of how they act >said individuals come here and act the way they do on their site here >"don't do that shit here" >others cancers see the original flock acting like cancers, more come >/v/ is now overtaken by said retards >"wasn't this place like all edgy and stuff where we can do whatever because anonymous?" >retards completely destroy /v/ image by pretending to be /v/ but with their cancer thrown in
>>276911121 Too many people and little order. Thwre was this one time we were supposed to raid YouTube by abusing the old private video system. Back then private videos couldn't be flagged, ergo deleted if it wasn't shared so everyone was supposed to upload porn, all kinds of porn, vanilla to sick shit, and all at the same time we would release all the videos on one blow.
Big problem was that the image with the instructions didn't specify a time zone so everyone did it at disorder and it didn't ammout to anything beyond YouTube strengthening it's policies.
Tom Cruise said some faggy shit that made /b/ want to protest Scientology. It got really fucking huge to the point where the raids and shit made moot try to ban it which spawned a lot of other alt chans.
It was dumb, because the protests where not focused, consisted of meme spamming and pretending you were a part of a super hacker collective.
The very idea that you could protest a religion was not well thought out.
In the end, the Anonymous is legion meme, the "idea that anonymous are internet Ant-heroes", Guy Fawkes masks and other shit was obliterated and 4chan boomed in popularity.
I wish our current shitposters were at least funny. Goodra guy just does the same copypasta, all Ruggarell does is post a picture of some old bitch from an anime and post something he's already posted 200 times, Cebruz does nothing but post "I'm bored ;_;" and avatarfag, and so on. It's just unfunny. I wish more creativity was put into it beyond just pasting the same shit over and over again.
>>276910173 Back in the day it was just normal to use a username since anonymity wasn't really a thing anyone cared about. Back in the old usenet days people would use their real names as their screen names because the concept of usernames was completely foreign to most people.
>>276911019 legitimately though, it was the beginning of the raid culture. It was funny at first, "an hero" was the last genuinely horrible but funny thing /b/ did. Then Habbo Hotel started and everything started sliding quickly downhill from there. I havent touched /b/ since 2007.
>>276912045 >It's them being shit not us >not realizing that a whole part of board culture on 4chan has always been about shitting on other people that get frustrated by things >Not realizing that the majority of cancerous behavior isn't even "Ebaum's, Gaia, tumblr, reddit, etc" people, it's just regulars on 4chan that do it "for the lulz"
Are you trying to kid yourself into thinking you have never shitposted with something you knew would set off the board or acted a certain way ironically to get people raged at "Those fuckin redditors/tumblrinas/etc" crowd?
If you have even done it once, even in jest, take a second to realize that is what the majority does. That's what "board culture" is.
I wouldn't call 4chan pre-2008 friendlier by a wide margin. If anything, post-2011 4chan is too much of a damn hugbox to be fun or enjoyable anymore. It's also way too large for it's own good. You rarely have massive shitstorms anymore since everything of significance has it's own general.
Nothing funny is made anymore since everyone is content to just coast on popular memes and not make something for themselves. It's gotten considerably more constructive in certain respects. Drawthreads weren't a regular thing until three years ago. It's a hell of a lot easier to find what your looking for and as long as it isn't anime recommendations on /a/, you can get away with a lot of shit here that wouldn't fly even five years ago. But that kills spontaneity so much that nothing good ever gains critical mass anymore. There's no fucking reason to ever see something you disagree with because instead of a downvote, you have a filter where you can block anything you even remotely dislike. You don't have to look at the other topics that people are posting and the general flow of the conversation because you have a catalog now. Hell, you can forget that any board that you don't browse exists with the official extension. For a place that prides it self on hating reddit, tumblr, and the like for having a narrow viewpoint, we've pigeonholed ourselves into a neat little box of relatively awkward outcasts with a slightly eclectic taste with a subculture that refuses to try something new.
Sadly, I've been stuck on this shithole for eight years, and even after all the shit that has gone down that would make a rational person quit this site out of dissapointment and rage, I'll probably be complaining about this eight years from now, contributing to problem with my inability and inaction.
On the plus side, I'm now the owner of a WiiU, so I guess that's some fucking Vidya Games for you.
>implying it was just 4chan that got bad The entire internet has gone to complete shit. No matter what website I go to or what game I play its nothing but utter shit. Nothing but shit posting and bad horrible attitudes. Its like the entire internet is now that tryhard mid era 4chan
>>276912372 It's the unix timecode for an image. We're at 14* now. You can tell how old an image is (unless someone renamed it to pretend) by the first two numbers. 11* ended in 2007/2008. 12* went from 2007/2008 to 2010. 13* went till early this year.
>>276909381 >the DS has a serious lack of games >no Nintendo handhelds are region-locked
Never thought I'd hear these again.
>>276911606 They were always cancerous. Back then the whole site was just moot and his friends from forums having their own sekrit klub. When the admin in underageb& the site isn't going to be any better.
Fortunately, the concept of the site seems to be good enough to overcome the ineptness of the moderation.
>>276912210 >You really can blame reddit for this. lol no you can't
Caring about what reddit does isn't reddit's fault. It's your fault.
I don't know what reddit is up to and I never fucking know. I don't care and I've no interest in caring. It's YOU IDIOTS who for whatever reason hate reddit but keep going back there who ruin things.
I literally would not have even heard about reddit until that child porn thing happened a few years ago. But that's not how I learned about them. I learned about them because YOU FUCKING IDIOTS WOULD NOT SHUT UP ABOUT THE FUCKING WEBSITE
>>276912647 Im not talking about memes you dick cunt im talking about OC.
Threads where OP provided the template and /v/ went wild with some surprisingly good effort and OC, then it would get reposted on reddit or something and you would feel pissed off because it was meant to be shared with on /v/ and /v/ alone, not the blithering normalfag masses of reddit
>>276912649 Well seeing as everyone just ignores and lets his posts sink to the bottom of the forum, I don't he's doing a very good job of it. But then again, I'm not mentally ill like that guy (probably) is.
Would be funny if one of our many shitposters got doxxed one of these days.
>>276912535 You are the guy that never got over dropping out of highschool and still hangs out with all the smoker kids after the last bell. It's always been the same, it's always been like this, even with more people its the same. The difference is you can't get over something you feel was taken away from you when it never was in the first place, 4chan has always been the late teens early twenties edgy hip douchebags that go through "this place is awesome" to "This place isn't as good as when I came here" the same way people get over card games and mall shops. There is no problem, this is the natural state of things, you just never got the memo.
