The original Valkyria Chronicles has better gameplay than either of the sequels. 3 does come close though, and has a better plot and cast of characters.

Just buy it. The borders try to imitated a book as the whole menu is in book format. You won't notice the borders at all after a while. Hell you might even end up liking it.
