Yume Nikki remains to be the only game that actually frightened me:
The Exmortis series. They're flash games, but probably the most horrifying morbid games I've played. Surprisingly deep story and amazing artwork for point and click flash games.
It's one of the most unsettling games I've ever played. Only felt fear when I saw FACE and Uboa's world, but outside of those I felt uncomfortable and on edge 100% of the time.
All I know is that the first one got Retsu'd so I doubt I'll ever be able to find them scary. I'll play them tomorrow though if you really think they're that great.
I never see anyone on /v/ talk about Condemned, which is strange since I think it's really interesting and underrated. This game has everything. Crackheads, tasers, psychic powers, scary hallucination, mannequins, and crime scene investigations that are actually fun.
It's been a few years since I played them. They have a few jump scares, but they're pretty captivating point and click "discover the dark secret behind the house" type shit. The atmosphere is really great though, so I hope you enjoy it.
Silent hill origins. Legitimately one of the best entries in the series and seldom talked about.
RNG and the way items work ruin Yume Nikki for me. It's fun for the first hour or two and then you get too fucking bored to care.

I love YN but never once has it scared me. I always played it with that feeling of childhood wonder. The exploration, discovering new and unusual things. I felt like a little kid again
I wish I could experience it again. I legitimately cry knowing it's an experience you can only experience once.
On that note, ME plays well on the idea of us only knowing like .1% of what we presume to exist. The reapers fit the whole "enormous creature that lives in dark space" bit well, until the writing went 400% turdchomper. They should have gone with the reapers trying to make more reapers because they were scared of something else and they need more advanced civilisations to hopefully create more powerful reapers in an attempt to push it back. That's how I'd have done it anyway.

In Destiny, the noises the Hive and the Vex make are pretty spoopy, and are downright startling if you were not aware they were immediately next to you.
Destiny also has some pretty good lore, despite it all being removed and put into Grimoire cards.

also, Vex have absolute authority in the Vault unless you have the relic. Gorgons kill you by simply willing you out of time. Also, upon completion of the vault, literally nothing happens. Ghost doesn't even say anything to you, which implies that the guardians are lost in time and unreachable even by their pocket angels after destroying Atheon.
The Ahamkara were a race of space dragons whose bones drove Warlocks mad, and implant messages in their heads that tell them to undo reality.

You could try something like Ib, .flow, or Yume 2kki. I haven't played the latter two, but most people seem to think they're great, and Ib definitely is.
Slowbeef popularized the term Let's Play. He didn't invent internet game playthroughs but it's probably safe to blame him for modern LP culture. It's not anything to be proud of.

I actually found .flow to be a creepier, more surreal experience than Yume Nikki. Yume Nikki is more distinct and memorable though, lots of stuff in .flow just sort of meshes together senselessly (which is the point).

They've been banned at least once before. That's why they have two channels, "Retsupurae" and "retsuplay".
I don't think they're doing anything that is actually bannable, but LPers that got Retsu'd sometimes got mad enough to copyright claim spam them until their video got taken down. Nowadays they mostly just do longplays and flashes and when they do an LP it's pretty weak and inoffensive because Slowbeef has become an SJW.
Anything where children are harmed or tortured is pretty much nightmare material for me, which in-turn makes Earthbound terrifying for me.

After playing Postal 2 i decided to look up Postal 1 and they sure have a completely different tone.
Postal 2 is so unserious and comical but Postal 1 is just completely fucked up.

They were told that they might not be able to return. Defeated Giygas or not, the technology might not have worked. It did though, probably some mysterious power like what defeated Giygas.
The creepy shit is hinted at throughout the game, Giygas is just a climax at the end - the rest of the game is totally different, in a way. Definitely worth a play.

Really not too much grinding is required but it's easy to get mixed up. Don't expect that much creepy though, it's typically contained to specific parts in the game.
Yeah, it's a wonderful game. Great music, memorable writing, and very fun gameplay. Super offbeat and charming. Also play Mother 1 and 3.
Slowbeef's screenshot LP of Metal Gear 2 was pretty funny IIRC, but yeah, Diabetus makes the duo and he seems like a legitimately cool guy.

What's the context of this? I know words can be more frightening than imagery sometimes. A search found Silent Hill P.T., but I've never played it. What do these mean?
After progressing through the game to a certain point, the game will glitch out. screen tearing appears and a very low pitches voice starts speaking and suddenly one of these screens will pop up. After this the game will reset and put you in a endless loop. You have to figure out a very far fetched puzzle to finish the game at this point.
PT has been hyped to death now but it sure was interesting when it first came out since no one knew what the game even was or who was behind it.

It's not really spooky, but it's pretty damn interesting. You take people off the streets and run them through your personal torture maze, trying to hit the sweet spot of perfect psychological and physical trauma before they escape from your dungeon, and uploading the footage so your performance can be rated by other people.
The third one. Holy fuck I always turned the volume off for that one.
The face. The eyeless, twisted face. I was scared until like a year and a half ago. it was terrifying.
FEAR's ok. If only for the atmosphere. The actual horror isn't all that great. It's more atmospheric and thematic than actually frightening.

Venetian Snares is the shit, I have his whole discography. Once I was listening to his tracks while playing some online vidya on headphones, and after few hours the songs just became too unbearable for me - I literally felt scared just from the sounds. I didn't even know what I was scared of, just felt terrible unease and had to turn off the music.

The Darkness is another good horror game. Again, having horror presented more in the atmosphere and story than in the actual gameplay.
You can also slide kick. Both kinds of kicks are one hit kills on normal enemies. There is nothing more fun than getting the shotgun and nailgun and becoming a spinning, flying death machine spewing feet and buckshot while nailing dudes to walls

In F.E.A.R.'s case, they try to shamelessly copy Ju On: The Grudge and tl;dr, in later games you get raped in first person by the villain and you conceive a child together.

The fight didn't scare me at all when I was nine in a room with three other people.
Hearing Giygas' fight theme without all the battle sound effects, alone, at night, seconds from sleep, it kinda changes things.
That song was literally causing me to feel uneasy and gave me constant chills until it ended under current circumstances, not to mention that sudden musical sucker punch.

I played Dead Space 2 and it wasn't too scary and Silent Hill 2 is one of my all time favorites, I tried to play through Amnesia but it really bored me

I'd say it's at least worth a try. It's quite a bit more surreal, the soundscapes are more detailed, environments are more varied, the pacing is a bit less predictable.
Maybe worth a try on your own time though.
As for stuff with your friends, I might suggest... Damn, I don't know. I hate playing singleplayer horror games with my friends around, so this is going to prevent me from thinking of anything.
Basically it's a bust-a-move style puzzle game where you match colored blocks as they fall down the screen.
In the background there's a little bunny girl who's kinda the game's focus. Your performance in the levels determines her composure and how the story turns out.
You'll know when you get the true ending because maximum spook

The way they use looping sound effects instead of music gives me the same feeling as having a fan on while I'm sleeping, it kinda relaxes me.
I find that kind of music very comfy as well, but the town and characters I would never think of as comfy. Like, I love Giygas theme because of how the fast and deep bass creates pressure for the theme so well. And then you get the distorted more ambient sounds later on to the theme.
The Thing. Better if they haven't seen it yet. As for vidya, I guess go with pic-related.
I think they're comfy too. It's a strange feeling, because they are very creepy games, but all the art is detailed in a way as to become familiarly nuanced. It's easy to see that they took many considerations to make it that way. The detail of the art and the impressions of the ambience can really create nice feelings, even if the resulting scene doesn't seem so nice. I'm listening to the unreleased forest trail ambient track right now in fact.
On the same topic of comfiness, I see people talk about how spooky Yume Nikki is, and while it had a few spooks, it's probably one of the most comfy games I've ever played, if not the comfiest.
Yume Nikki ost was really weird.
Everytime I recommend Yume Nikki to a friend I tell him the OST is composed of "almost songs", but it really gives it an unsettling tone, and still sounds amazing.
I think they're intentionally comfy. The horror in SH comes from subverting that comfiness. You're in places that would normally be quiet and peaceful, so it's like "I could be comfy here, except... something's wrong..." and then it's such a shock when you go to the otherworld.
A lot of devs that try to recreate SH atmosphere miss that and just pump up the spooky all of the day and it doesn't work.

Irisu is one of the comfiest games around. Shooting blocks while listening to this on loop for hours is just so relaxing.
What game do you think touches closest to Silent Hill in terms of atmosphere? YN does a decent job of being unsettling without over staying its welcome. Siren tried to do that but didn't really have the soul that SH had.

I don't know, it's hard, SH is one of those games that was so influential its influence is everywhere.

Yeah, I think so. Unfortunately I don't think this neglect for comfiness is the only problem with most of those who attempt to recreate the Silent Hill atmosphere, but I think it's also that they simply aren't working the right way that will create a proper atmosphere
It's important for one to have a specific feeling which they wish to give some place, and they mustn't forget that feeling, because it should govern every single decision they make in creating it. The smallest things, like the "3D composition", such as the position of a tree, could change the entire feeling. I think it has definitely helped that the old Team Silent had a lot of knowledge in fine art, not just "entertainment art".
Closest as in similar to or as in same quality?
One example of great atmosphere is The Void (or Ice Pick Lodge games in general, really). It's the most difficult and beautiful gardening and dating sim survival game I've ever played. I suppose in that way it's similar to Silent Hill in that presence and division of the comfy and the frightening/tense. It's not really a horror game though.

As someone who has grown up on Something Awful and 4chan, I have seen many a snuff film, twisted doujinshi, and dismemberment gif.
Audition is the only commercially produced horror film that made me cringe to the point of wanting to look away, and terrified for weeks of the world around me.

That is something that is a dying breed. SH was able to deliver a certain feeling other games won't be able to re produce. Or should I say a combination of feelings.
Some games give you helplessness, others give you adrenaline, stick to the basics of spooks. Walking from room to room, discovering new twisted evils, reading each notes/diary/writing to uncover a new world. Being thrust into the other world putting a twist on everything. Walking through an area in complete silence, no music, finding all sorts of mysterious and then being backed into the otherworld where it becomes chaotic, insane and messing with all senses. Lots of well thought out symbolism, little details in the environment, based puzzles, and a kickass soundtrack for those not too silent moments. Silent Hill isn't a scare you in the moment, it sits with you the more you think about it.Hopefully Silent Hills will bring it back. Not holding my breath though.

The Super Mario part WAS pretty scary (and gloriously retarded at the same time).
Yume Nikki leaves me uneasy every time I play it, hence I still haven't beaten it. It doesn't scare me, but its atmosphere is extremely odd and unsettling.
I personally enjoy Lone Survivor quite a bit. It's more spooky than most 3D games because it nails atmosphere so well with its audio. It's fun too. It's combat isn't really deep at all but it's more about managing ammunition and using flares/bait then constantly fighting.
Can't explain why but the levels in the first two Tony Hawk games used to leave me feeling unsettled. I think it was the complete barrenness of them, created a strange ominous atmosphere.

I love Yume Nikki so much that it inspired me to make a game, and this year I was able to get it on Steam.
And the only reason why I found out about YN in first place was because of /v/ and /x/ so here are a bunch of keys for it:
It's far from being as good as Yume Nikki though and I'm still working on it, but I love spreading free keys here. It's better than giving them to fake russing youtubers who email me every now and then.
FACE is indeed a lot creepier but the reason everyone likes Uboa so much is that it makes absolutely no sense.

All of what I'd say is darker for a Pokemon is this:
>You and your partner get sent to the future where time's stopped and everything is gray/black.
>Your team gets tied to pillars and are going to be slowly executed by Sableye's claws.
>You bust out to find a Celebi that can take you back to the present, all the while bring your partner is depressed by how shit the world is.

That's most of it, and it really surprised me when playing.
I had a lot of predjudice going into .flow because I did not like the idea of a "darker" Yume Nikki one bit, but in the end I had an experience almost on par with the original.
Whereas YN's areas are often very open and feel almost unending sometimes, .flow's can be claustrophobic and suffocating beyond the first four areas, and often very industrial-themed. The soundtrack is also very atmospheric and memorable in each area, it may even be the one aspect I enjoyed more than Yume Nikki's.

I'm alone on this but I liked SH3 more than SH2. Gameplay and environment wise anyway. SH2 had a far better story but SH3 was just neat. Good hunting anon, glhf and don't forget your flashlight.

I would've kept it about the mysteries of dark matter and black holes. That was way more interesting to me than "we build synthetics to keep organics from building synthetics that will kill the organics so we'll just kill the organics to make more synthetics."
I also found the indoctrination theory more interesting than anything the writers came up with. I still believe that's what happened with what we got.

The jump scares were off putting to me. The game would have been about 10 times better without them and the non-ending chase scenes.
Although the bear at the beginning was a pretty nice touch. Rest were just shitty in comparison
