I have new class at uni this year. Something that can translate as "behavioural components of success". Basically it's a guy reading a power point presentation about how you HAVE TO behave like an extrovert to be successful.

Not really, but you can always ACT like one.

I'm pretty good at acting extroverted, but it is very exhausting and it takes a lot of practice.

You have to push push push to initiate and keep control of the conversation and you also have to find hooks in what people say to keep the pace going.

I almost want to gag when I have to do the typical small talk stuff like talking about the weather or current affairs and all that, but I still do it as an ice-breaker and people generally feel more comfortable if you can at least PRETEND to empathize with them. Sometimes you'll surprise yourself and end up in an interesting conversation at least. (though if you're like me, you'll have good conversations all the time, but no real attachment there from anyone)

I remember at uni, in a group project, I ended up being the leader and guiding everyone to success on a particular hard topic, (that plays to my strengths at being able to look at things holistically). What surprised me is that everyone thought I had loads of friends. (And that explains the no attachment from others. They just assume you have loads of friends already because you're a decent person)

But usually I'm alone. I only really have one friend I don't see all that often because he lives out of town. And despite being invited to hang out by some people, I usually prefer to spend my time alone, doing my hobbies and watching the world go by. I sometimes get a little lonely, but I'm usually not that bad. I'm in my element when I'm left to tinker with something anyway.

What could you possibly take if all they're giving you is like in OP's image? They drop a few names about what's going down in The Walking Dead, maybe a few plot points, say it's really cool, but then you can't even slightly pick up the conversation after that besides maybe "cool maybe I'll watch it" or something because you still have yet to watch it. The conversation has no paths from there unless you bring in an entirely different conversation starter, in which case the previous conversation doesn't even slightly matter anymore and you could barely call yourself being social at that point.

I'm an extreme introvert with a professionaly diagnosed schizoid and avoidant personality and I can easily hold my conversation with anyone, even with extreme extroverts or the so-called alphas. You outright said conversations are a give-and-take. His entire post was originally about how the people he tries conversing with are not giving anything he can work with or use so he brings up other topics to see if he can get them to give. The entirety of it is trying to get help on what to do if there's nothing to take.

I really suck because I flourish in a party environment but also can fall off the face of the earth for weeks in my basement by myself. I either juggle multiple girls at once or don't know how to even talk to one if I wanted. I either constantly have plans and party or play Wii U for a month straight without realizing I didn't shower the whole time.

I honestly thought I had multiple personalities for a while, it's completely random and I never can really "control" which one I feel like being or snap in or out of being "introverted" or "extroverted." I don't know what to do about it.

I think the line gets blurry sometimes. I identified as an introvert for most of my life because I tended to enjoy playing video games or reading by myself rather than interacting with people. On the other hand, I've always been really good with people and have had leadership positions in school clubs and stuff since I was young. It's a weird line that I'm still not sure which side I fall on and I bet it's the same for a lot of people. Quite a few of my friends are some of the loudest most outgoing people I know when around old friends, but instantly clam up around new people. Others are more one sided, and fit the more traditional stereotypes of introverts or extroverts. All of them play video games.

You just simply have to say hi and smile, and just make a little small talk. Like I dunno, the weather, something in the surroundings, maybe spin it a little into sharing an experience or talk about it in an overall context.
Then look to them and see if they have anything interesting about them or on them, and ask them a polite question about it.
People are very often willing to share information about things (if they have nothing to hide), and are often really happy that you are showing interest in them.

So like, I see a customer with an unusual ingredient in their shopping. I ask them what it's for, bounce maybe a few ideas about, and then get a response, then from there you can just talk about cooking in general.
