So many threads lately about X-COM and whether to buy Enemy Within. Here's the shit you need to know anons:
1) Get Enemy Within, improves the game significantly
2) Go to the X-COM Nexus site and read up on Long War
3) If you want something seriously hardcore and masochistic, download, install it and play it without adjusting it
4) If you want to make adjustments to the Long War mod check the forums on 'Modding Long War' on the mod's page on Nexus
You can mod so many aspects of it: enemy health, your soldier's health, aim, will, mobility (base and improvements), research and build time, starting power, perk bonuses...
We don't need Firaxis' shitty code.
I'm playing vanilla Enemy Unknown and it's pretty good, I'll get Enemy Within eventually I guess, got that 80% off voucher from GMG.
Tried to start a thread a bit ago but nobody seems to want to discuss this game.
>No way to assign classes to your soldiers
Frustrating as fuck. All I wanted was a Scottish Assault, a Canadian Sniper, a Russian Heavy, and a German Support. Is that so much to ask for?
>mfw my german heavy is named Hugo Stiglitz
Next run I'm going to keep dismissing and recruiting till all my men are from Israel
>get key to alien base
>try vanilla enemy unknown on normal after my budy tells me it's decent but piss easy
>have a hard time initially, then figure out to hang onto satellites until the end of the month and to start in africa
>still not a cake walk, lose a good number of men but never get fucked over to an unrecoverable point
>finish campaign, was decently challenging
>ask friend why he said the game was piss easy
>he tells me he saved scum'd
>terror mission on Impossible, "VERY HARD"
>it's okay I've done plenty of these and it's nothing at all
>squad is all max level, and it's on that dumb police HQ map
>walk into the main building
>TFW first time against Chryssalid
>I enter their range and they walk straight against my soldiers
>Kill civilians and make zombies that spawns at two steps of my soldiers
>I didn't knew you can't even stun the fuckers
Ive beaten the game twice with EW and once without, But I cant play Long war since I dont own EW on steam (I pirated it) Anyone got a EW -80% coupon they can spare so i can get it someday?
Because sometimes shit like this happens.
I killed the cyberdisc, it exploded one car, then the next exploded and then the next exploded, killing two of my guys from full health.
I know but the game is genuinely challenging when starting up, the mistakes and when shit hits the fan is partly what make it fun.
Especially if it's a custom dude.
I really hope they make another expansion, but from the alien perspective.
Imagine an xcom campaign were you are the aliens doing dastardly things and experimenting.
From what I understand both games did well, it was a surprise hit.
It does very well whenever steam sales happen to boot.
I don't think the game had a retarded budget either, so I'm sure it made it's money back.
>get a sniper up to the point where you can get double tap or in the zone
>become virtually unbeatable
You don't even need to do anything with your other troops besides scout out enemies at that point. I remember how much I fucking laughed on the last level where I killed the grand ethereal on the same turn I found it because I just shot it twice with the sniper.
They didn't even balanced them out properly for Enemy Within either, it's retarded.
I didn't like EW because it made the game drastically fast paced to almost run and gun levels with that annoying canister collecting mechanic.
Then again, I would play Xenonauts over X-Com EU any day.
Lighting reflexes have diminishing returns which means the more overwatch fire it catches the less effective it would be. If a bunch of your troops fire on it by the time it reaches your assault he should be able to hit it. Not that it matters, he can empty his gun on multiple enemies in a single overwatch turn.
I really liked the meld thing. Like you said, it awards an aggressive, but intelligent strategy. Which is what a real shadow organization would do against an alien threat. You couldn't let them run amok long, you would have to shut that shit down fast.
I think meld was brilliant because the base XCOM was a trade off between time and danger. Like, I could spend all damn day over watching my squad through the map, but it would take 50 turns. No decisions, no thought, just moving one man up to find a pod of enemies, then retreating to an overwatch line
It's not tactical genius, its autism
Yeah with the base game, I found myself getting aggravated by that very thing.
You think the devs made the meld the way they did to try and fix that? Or do you think it was just a lucky coincidence?
It was intentional, since most people just stuck to "overwatch with one scouter" for every mission.
The only thing I wish could have been implemented would be a "pay2rankup" system, where for a few hundred currency you could promote a soldier up to Corporal or higher or something, so that late game could have a B Team.
Why would you want to mod the HP of the aliens in LW?
i wanted to avoid this, unless the increased squad number makes it easier to take down
Then you realize openxcom is better and you play that instead.
Just kidding, you can play what you want
Lol sorry I don't spend all day erry day playing vidya games. get a fucking life bro
Not just the increased squad number, but the perks and weapon damage increases.
For example, a Jaegar MEC with pulse tech (one before last) can easily crit for 20+ and can shoot twice per turn. It also has the best aim of any class and starts with VPT. Dies really quickly though.
Thats not to say these things aren't difficult, but the game is less punishing when you lose a soldier compared to vanilla.
