So many threads lately about X-COM and whether to buy Enemy Within. Here's the shit you need to know anons:

1) Get Enemy Within, improves the game significantly
2) Go to the X-COM Nexus site and read up on Long War
3) If you want something seriously hardcore and masochistic, download, install it and play it without adjusting it
4) If you want to make adjustments to the Long War mod check the forums on 'Modding Long War' on the mod's page on Nexus

You can mod so many aspects of it: enemy health, your soldier's health, aim, will, mobility (base and improvements), research and build time, starting power, perk bonuses...

We don't need Firaxis' shitty code.

From what I understand both games did well, it was a surprise hit.
It does very well whenever steam sales happen to boot.

You don't even need to do anything with your other troops besides scout out enemies at that point. I remember how much I fucking laughed on the last level where I killed the grand ethereal on the same turn I found it because I just shot it twice with the sniper.

Lighting reflexes have diminishing returns which means the more overwatch fire it catches the less effective it would be. If a bunch of your troops fire on it by the time it reaches your assault he should be able to hit it. Not that it matters, he can empty his gun on multiple enemies in a single overwatch turn.

I really liked the meld thing. Like you said, it awards an aggressive, but intelligent strategy. Which is what a real shadow organization would do against an alien threat. You couldn't let them run amok long, you would have to shut that shit down fast.

I think meld was brilliant because the base XCOM was a trade off between time and danger. Like, I could spend all damn day over watching my squad through the map, but it would take 50 turns. No decisions, no thought, just moving one man up to find a pod of enemies, then retreating to an overwatch line

It was intentional, since most people just stuck to "overwatch with one scouter" for every mission.

The only thing I wish could have been implemented would be a "pay2rankup" system, where for a few hundred currency you could promote a soldier up to Corporal or higher or something, so that late game could have a B Team.

Not just the increased squad number, but the perks and weapon damage increases.

For example, a Jaegar MEC with pulse tech (one before last) can easily crit for 20+ and can shoot twice per turn. It also has the best aim of any class and starts with VPT. Dies really quickly though.

Thats not to say these things aren't difficult, but the game is less punishing when you lose a soldier compared to vanilla.
